WHAT IS AN OPENING SEQUENCE?Opening title sequences are most commonly seen at the beginning of movies and are utilized to do very important things:• Give an insight into what the plot will be like• Introduce characters• Present the genre • Entice the audience• Set the mood • Create Enigma

WHY ARE OPENING SEQUENCES IMPORTANT?• The opening to movies are very important as they give the first impression of the movie to

the audience which then lets them know if they are going to enjoy it.

• So it is crucial that movies make sure that their openings are interesting and will catch the audiences attention.

• If the opening is not exciting and eye catching, the audience may stop watching the movie, especially in cases where the movie is not being watched in a cinema, for example on TV or Blu-Ray.

EXAMPLE: HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS (2002)• This opening starts off with the famous theme tune to the Harry Potter

movies and the iconic Warner Brothers logo in the opening. This creates excitement for the audience member who are fans of the movie.

• It then proceeds to introduce the title of the movie which is also an important part of the openings and tells the audience a lot about the movie.

• The tracking shot that shows the town and all the houses, sets the scene and informs the audience of where the opening is set.

• Following that, the opening then introduces the main character of the movie, Harry Potter. This is an important function of opening scenes. The picture of the three main characters also slightly introduces the other two main characters and still creates a little mystery for those who have not seen Harry Potter before.

• The rest of the opening scene shows the relationship of the main character and his family, gives the audience an idea of the plot and a tells them a little about the characters which entices audience members.
