Gary Fitzgerald (www.myexpression.org) was our guest speaker this week.
Since retiring he has taken to assisting not for profit organisations in establishing web sites.
He spoke about digital lifestyles, and the different ways the internet and computers can be used, from networking to influencing and many ways in between.
Gary went into the etiquette of social media, and very timely, as there have been a number of cases recently in the news where etiquette won't followed and time in jail did. The basic etiquette is, if you wouldn't say it to a persons face, then you don't say it in an email or on social media.
It was also discussed that if we are wanting to get to the X & Y GEN through social media then we need a 'hook', something to get people to look at our Facebook page and then ultimately to our web page.
To find that 'hook' we need to do some more research. We need to be able to encapsulate what we are about, a bit like an elevator speech, but in pictures.
Don't forget our East Timor presentation this week!
Oh, and I forgot to ask last Thursday for volunteers for the next BBQ at Lake Weroona Saturday 15th, from about 10ish to 2ish. Five people are required. Please let Terry know ASAP. I will ask for more names this week.
Go forth and extend the hand of Rotary to all who you meet,

RELAY FOR LIFE- PLANT SALE
Relay for Life FundraiserA Plant Sale will be held at Elaine’s place on Saturday 6th October from 9:30 am. Volunteers will be appreciated on the day to set up, sell and chat happily to our customers. Enough volunteers will mean that we can offer, for a small cost, a cuppa and bikkie or two. Please give this a thought. There is plenty of room, plenty of chairs etc. Time to sit and chat ...... and be informed about Relay for Life and the reality of Rotary’s involvement in community service. Thanks to those who have already given time and plants. We have a great variety and the more the merrier. So keep on potting! Please think about joining our team in 2013.We had 18 participants in 2012 and raised just over $2000.00. Great fun, for a great cause!!I don't have a date for Relay event yet but will pass it on when I do.

Dear Fellow Bendigo South Rotarians and Friends,
Please find below an article, which my good friend Sakuji Tanaka (Rotary International President) penned for me, especially for this weeks edition of the SignPost.
- Matthew ScottSignPost Editor
September 2012 Dear Fellow Rotarians,
Many of you know that we now have five Avenues of Service in Rotary. The fifth, and newest, is New Generations Service. There are many ways to serve through this avenue.
All of the work we do to educate children, to improve maternal health, to help families live healthier lives – all of this is service to New Generations. We also serve New Generations by working to eradicate polio, helping to ensure that future generations of children will be born into a polio-free world.
Our youth and young adult programs, such as Rotaract, Interact, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, and Rotary Youth Exchange, are a very important part of this Avenue of Service. We must remember that the youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow. By helping to develop young leaders and bringing younger members into our clubs, we strengthen communities – and Rotary’s future.
For most of my life, I have been a salesman. I learned long ago that being a good salesman is not enough. You must also have a good product. If you are a good salesman, you will make the first sale. But if you do not have a good product, you will make only the first sale. You will not make the second.
It is not enough to bring new members into Rotary. We want them to stay. We want the new, young members to become long time members. We want them to be Rotary leaders in 10, 20, or 30 years. How do we do this? We have to look at our product. We have to look at Rotary not with our own eyes, but with new eyes. When we invite a new member to join and that person’s answer is no, we should ask why. This is not to pressure someone into joining. It is to find out more information. What are the obstacles to membership? Is it an inconvenient meeting time? Is it too much of a time commitment? Is it something else that we have not thought of? We need to ask questions, and we need to open ourselves to the answers. We cannot say, “No, we will not do this,” just because we have never done it before. Why not have child care at a meeting? Why not involve families in projects? Why not makeattendance requirements less strict, or meet less often?
Our new Avenue of New Generations Service is an important step in ensuring many future generations of Rotary, and of Service Above Self.
