Welcome to Hindusthan microfinanceWelcome to Hindusthan Microfinance Private Limited, a new microfinance institution which aims to offer credit and other financial products to the urban poor of India. Hindustan Microfinance (HMPL) operates in Mumbai, India and provides various small loans to people unable to attain credit at other (larger?) banks. HMPL gives those who ant to expand their business, start a business of use money for emergent matters a chance to do so while helping clients improve their financial management skills.Micro-finance institutions began in India in response to With almost 75% of Mumbai’s population living below the poverty line set by micro-loans have a huge potential to benefit the local community by providing not only financial stability but education on fiscal and risk management.Noticing the almost non-existent presence of microfinance institutions in Mumbai, Hindusthan began in order to serve the financial needs of the urban poor and now aspires to provide financial services to 200,000 clients by 2013 through developing an easily replicated, urban microfinance model. Hindusthan’s founders represent a mix of qualified and experienced professionals in the microfinance field with the common desire to not only help but educate clients. Please be part of our journey to provide temporary loans and long-term solutions.
History
Hindusthan Microfinance Pvt Ltd (HMPL) is a new urban microfinance institution (MFI), which aims at offering credit and other financial products to the urban poor in Mumbai. Hindusthan Microfinance is a result of the Chief Founder, Mr. Anil Jadhav, working with the Hindusthan Cooperative Credit Society Ltd (HCCS) as its Chairman. HCCS has a 20+ year history in providing micro-credit and micro-savings among the poor in Mumbai.
The aspirations of Anil Jadhav to reach out to the poor in a large scale resulted in the formation of HMPL as an NBFC. Mr Anil Jadhav, the Chief Promoter and Mr. LB Prakash, a microfinance professional co-founded HMPL, with exclusive focus on microfinance. While the NBFC is new, the microfinance work in Mumbai is not new for the promoters, who have a good understanding of the needs of the poor and have been reaching out to them.
The legal form of NBFC allows HMPL to raise equity and funds more easily, while ensuring greater accountability, transparency and corporate governance.
Though HMPL started its operations in March 2008, the momentum was from October 2008. HMPL plans to work initially in Mumbai city and the surrounding areas/districts – particularly in the shanties and slum areas. In March 2008, Anil and Prakash started HMPL as its own entity. The operations of Hindusthan initially commenced in the Mumbai region but plan to open 50 branches in the surrounding area in 5 years.
One of the ways HMPL will be able to achieve opening 50 branches is by using the software used by HCCS and other Cooperative Societies in the Mahrashtra area. Developed by Hindusthan IT Solutions Pvt Ltd., a group company, the MIS software is capable of handling the wide range of savings and credit products and is compatible with hand-held devices that generate clients’ receipts at the time of collection. Because of these efficiencies, HMPL staff members are able to work with more clients and offer a stream-lined loan system that people want to work with.
BranchesTo fulfill our mission of providing appropriate financial services to 200,000 poor clients
by 2013, Hindusthan Microfinance plans to open 50 branches in the next five years. These branches will serve different areas in Mumbai and surrounding districts. With so many branches working in diverse areas, each branch will have its own dedicated staff, supported through the Regional Office and Head Office.

Farzana Kadar Shaikh (Bag making business)
Farzana lives in Jari Mari with her husband, Kadar, and two sons Shadab (9) and Aziz (7). She has been in the cloth bag making business for the last two years. Farzana used to work for her sister, who supplied her with raw materials to stitch bags and bought the completed bags at Rs. 2 each. With a Rs. 10,000 loan from HMPL, Farzana was able to set up her own bag making business, creating employment for 5 other women in the neighborhood. The loan from HMPL changed Farzana’s life drastically. With a Rs. 10,000 JLG loan from HMPL, Farzana was able to set up her own bag making business, creating employment for her and 5 other women in the neighborhood.Farzana now procures raw materials directly from Air India for Rs. 5,000 – 7,000 (adequate for 10,000 – 11,000 bags) and divides the material between her and the 5 other women. Each of these 5 women bring her 150 – 200 stitched bag a day and she pays them for Rs.2 for each bag. Farzana also stitches bags herself, working on the sewing machine in her home - from 8am – 11am and 4pm – 8pm daily. When a total of 1,500 to 2,000 bags are completed, Farzana’s husband takes those to Pune to sell in bulk to a large shop. It is difficult to sell these bags in Mumbai, but they sell well in places further away like Pune or in the villages. The bags come in 3 sizes, small, medium, and large, and sell for Rs. 5, Rs. 7, and Rs.10 respectively. Before receiving a HMPL loan, Farzana’s monthly income was Rs. 1,000. Now it has quadrupled to Rs. 4,000. She uses the additional income for basic necessities like food and saves the balance amount. After receiving the HMPL JLG loan, she has been able to buy gold, to pay for her children’s education in the future. Now, she feels secure about the future. She dreams of sending her 2 children Shadab (9) and Aziz (7) to college and is looking forward to a second loan of Rs. 20,000 from HMPL to expand her business.
Achievement......
Relationship with Financial Institutions
In a short period of time, HMPL has been able to establish a good reputation and relationship with Bankers, and is currently trying to broad base it dependence on to multiple lenders. Currently, it has borrowed funds from three banks – Yes Bank, HDFC and Axis Bank. HMPL is trying to borrow funds from RBS Bank (formerly ABN AMRO Bank), SIDBI and a couple of other banks in the current financial year (FY 2009-10), and is expecting further sanctions during the year.
Sustainability
For a start-up, HMPL has taken on the difficult task of working in Mumbai and neighbouring districts (sub-urban areas like Thane). While it is not so cost-effective to work in Mumbai because of the relatively higher costs to operate and source human resources, with our experience of working in Mumbai and also having good technical knowledge about microfinance, we expect that we will be able to achieve in our ambition of creating a viable, sustainable and replicable
model to reach out to the millions of poor in Mumbai.HMPL operates in Mumbai and surrounding suburbs which offers a good potential in terms of future business. While the OSS for the previous financial year (2008-09, the first year of operations) was at 63%, it is expected to be over 90% in the current financial year (FY 2009-10, the second year) and achieve 100% in the financial year 2010-11.OSS level is below 100% level in FY2008 primarily due to start up costs, branch expansion and slow client growth. In the current financial year, the OSS is almost 100% for the first quarter. HMPL adopted a slow growth strategy during the year 2008-09 as it wanted to test its product, methodology and systems. 15.00 CET, 13/12/2010 - Companies worldwide will be given greater guidance and support on how to conduct their business responsibly and report on their sustainability performance thanks to a partnership between the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the OECD.
The partnership, announced today, will help companies make greater use of the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises and the GRI Sustainability Reporting Framework, bringing increased coherence and consistency to their efforts to act more responsibly and be more transparent about their sustainability.
The OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises are the most comprehensive corporate responsibility instrument developed by governments in existence today. They cover all major areas of business ethics and are addressed to all the activities of multinational enterprises operating in or from the 42 adhering countries. The OECD Guidelines also have a unique implementation mechanism to address issues arising from their non-observance.
GRI provides the world’s most widely-used framework for producing sustainability reports. The GRI Sustainability Reporting Framework enables large and small companies, non-profit organizations and government bodies worldwide to assess their sustainability and disclose the results. Transparency through reporting on environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors drives the sustainability of individual organizations and, ultimately, the global economy. GRI’s key goal is to make sustainability reporting mainstream.
The OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises and the GRI Sustainability Reporting Framework are based on and promote the same internationally agreed standards and principles for responsible business conduct, including social and human rights and economic and environmental matters. The GRI Sustainability Reporting Framework provides guidance on how to measure sustainability performance and the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises a benchmark to assess such performance.
Today’s Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aims to establish a three year program to encourage companies to use both the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises and the GRI Sustainability Reporting Framework. The MoU also outlines the way GRI and OECD can work together to make use of the synergies between the two instruments and strengthen cooperation in other common areas of mutual interest.
Mervyn King, Chairman of the Global Reporting Initiative’s Board of Directors, said: “We welcome today’s step forward in our work with OECD. GRI’s mission is to mainstream ESG reporting worldwide. By working with OECD, we can help responsible multinational enterprises lead the way to a sustainable future.”
Richard Boucher, OECD Deputy-Secretary General, concurred: “This MoU not only attests to the excellent co-operation that already exists between the OECD and the GRI but also to a common determination to assist enterprises to become more responsible corporate citizens.” Media contacts:Marie-France HoudeOrganisation for Co-operation and [email protected]: + 33(0)1 45 24 92 16
