In 1931 pilots Pangborn and Herndon made a record-breaking, nonstop trans-Pacific flight from Misawa, Japan to Wenatchee, Washington. In order to increase range, they dropped their landing gear over the Pacific Ocean, belly landing on this hill overlooking Wenatchee.

SIP THROUGH WINE & CIDER COUNTRYFour seasons of sunny days and cool nights combine with our distinct
geology to create the perfect environment for winemaking. This
climate has served to attract skilled and passionate winemakers that
add their personalities to the story. As the appeal of hard ciders
continues to spread, we are fortunate to have orchardists experienced
in curating their home grown and hand-crafted blends right here in
the heart of Washington’s apple country.

It is one thing to enjoy a quality beer, and as our community shows,
quite another to experience it in good company at one of our
growing number of taprooms. People flock to trivia nights, home
brewing club meetings, and great food at their favorite spots. One
thing is clear: there is nothing so fine as raising a glass of local suds
with friends at the end of a day full of adventures.

Copious amounts of sunshine make this a plentiful agricultural
region. A century ago, settlers invested their time and personal
fortunes to irrigate the arid landscape. Now with fresh water
readily available, the region is ripe with bumper crops of fresh
seasonal bounty that nourish our children, our souls, our
economy and our world.

SMALL TOWN VIBE, BIG MOUNTAIN TERRAINLight powder, tons of sun, amazing views, terrain that fits everyone in the family—that’s Mission. Only 12 miles from Wenatchee, the ski area is built into a 2,000 acre basin on the eastern side of the Cascade Mountains. A little higher, a little drier, and quite a bit “sunshinier” (300 days annually, in fact) than the other mountains in the region. That means when storms come in, they drop a different kind of snow at Mission: light, dry powder. Package deals for lodging, lessons and rentals make it a top choice for winter fun! Plan your visit—check the schedule for mountain events and concerts.

Outdoor recreation is a thriving force in our community. Easily accessed trails lead to surrounding foothills open to running, hiking, and mountain biking. Local crags challenge rock climbers and mountaineers. Nearby rivers entice paddlers, boaters and fishermen. Towering over all of this are the peaks of the high Cascades that skiers and backpackers love. There’s a lifetime of outdoor adventures out our back door. Catch a shuttle, hire a guide, and run or ride Devils’ Gulch Trail.

FOLLOW THE APPLE CAPITAL LOOP TRAILThe Apple Capital Loop Trail is a serene setting for strolling, power
walking, running and biking, spanning 26 miles in the heart of the
Wenatchee Valley, with easy access points on both sides of the river.
Manicured parks and lawns decorate the west side; the east side
showcases the natural arid dessert beauty. Inquisitive folks can tour
through the Horan Wildlife Preserve, a prime birding area at the
confluence of the Wenatchee and Columbia Rivers.

It’s beautiful here. But our lakes, rivers, meadows, and foothills are more
than just scenery—they’re also a valuable resourse, providing the area with
quality water, recreation, and a vital connection to nature. The Chelan-
Douglas Land Trust works with private landowners, businesses, and local
communities to ensure that we will be able to enjoy the benefit of cherished
natural areas for years to come. Learn more about how to volunteer, donate,
and support efforts to protect these areas that enrich our lives, and ensure
that future generations will have open space and clean, healthy rivers.

In 1929 it took a certain type of vision and fortitude to take 40 acres
of scrub desert growth and turn it into flourishing alpine meadows,
shimmering pools and shady evergreen pathways that overlook the
entire Wenatchee Valley, with the Columbia River flowing through it.
Open seasonally, this Chelan County Park is now available to tour, use
as a wedding venue, or for quiet contemplation, concerts, and yoga.
