MartinLutherKingMemorial,WashingtonDCIhadthehonortoworkonthismemorialwithRussellFudge,SE,duringmytimeatGFDSEngineers.IwasresponsibleformanagingCADandpreparingpermitdrawingsfrombeginningtocompletion.Althoughtheprojectwasnotparticularlycomplex,Millionsofpeoplevisitthesiteannually.ItislikelytobetheprojectthatIamthemostproudtohavebeenapartof.Aboveandonthefolowingpages,drawingsillustratesomeaspectsofthestruc-turalsystem.Thephotosshowthefinishedwork.
LIJNorthShoreHospitalGreatNeck,NewYorkWewereawardedthebidforanewwingoftheexistinghospital,consistingof14operatingroomsand44intensivecareunits.Special considerations are re-quiredfordesigningandbuildinghospitals.ADAcomplianceisessentialandcoordinationofcom-plexsystemscomeintoplay.DuringmytimeatEvans&Paul,Imanagedtwohospitalprojects,adialysiscenterandanursinghome.
Residence VestibuleMiami,FloridaIworkedonthisprojectaspartofadesignandfabricationteamduringmytimewithSouthParkFabricators.Theclientwasinterestedinadramaticentrancetotheircondominium.Wedesignedthevestibulewithtrans-lucentbacklitalabasterandwengeveneerwalls.Thebenchanddoorweredesignedandfabricatedin-houseandinstalledbyotherson-site.Thehammeredfinishgranitebasinofthefountainspansthelengthofthefarwall,beyondthedoorandintotheapartment.Bluelightingwashesupfromthefountainbasin.Totaldesignandfabricationwasthethemefortheentireunit.Theimageonthispageshowsarenderingofhowthevestibulewastoappearsteppingofftheelevator.Oppositepageshowsfinishedimages.
MasterBathDowntown,ManhattanEvans&Paulbeganmypracticaldevelopmentindigitalfabricationtech-niques,usingacombinationofAutoCadandRhino,withvariousplug-ins.Here,allthewhitewalls,countertops,vanities,sinks,nichesandfloorsareseamlessandintegralwithatypicaloneinchcoveinsideallcorners.
IwasresponsiblefordesigningandCNCprogrammingthisproject,aswellasmanagingtheinstallofthecorianfixturesandfinishes.Thelowerimageonthispageshowsatubdeckrestingontopofacastirontub.Thedeckisintegratedintothecorianwallsbeyond,andafull-heightglasswallisnotchedintothethirddeckedge,andadjacentcorianwallontheshowerside.
Thisresidenceoverlooksthecityfromthe14thfloorofadowntownapartment.Wedidfourofthesehighendbathroomsaswellaspartofthekitchenandlaundryarea.
HomesteadRemodelDeerIsle,Maine
Thisprojectwasacollaborationwithmyfather,adeveloper,designerandbuilder.
Theoriginalhomesteadwasbuiltintheearly19thcenturyona12acresite.Itwasasmallcapestylestructure,restingonafield-stonefoundation.ThehouseprovidedshelterformanygenerationsofthePickeringfamilyandwasrecentlypurchasedbyaNewYorkcoupleplanningtoretiretotheareainthefuture.UsingSIPPanelsandatimberframe,a30’x30’barnwaserectedandattachedtotheeastwing.Theexistinghousewasexpandednorthandascreenedporchwasbuilttothewest.Itwasdecidedthattheoriginalstructurewastoremainandallnewelementswouldmatchtheexistingcapestyle.Thebuildingwasrecommissionedwithalowtemperaturehotwaterheatingsystemandzonedradiantfloorthroughout.Evacu-atedtubesolarcollectorsontheroofpreheatdomestichotwater,reducingthecarbonfootprintdramatically.
