BE R LIN GOOD MOOD,LOT S OF POSITIV E SIGNA L S
We are half way through the second semester of fashion fairs in Europe. A er Florence, Milan and Paris, the long awaited Berlin events started yesterday with fresh and posi-tive energy. Bread & Butter hosted a great opening party at “Cafe am neuen See“ in the center of Berlin and presented at midnight the “Temple of Denim“ with a fashion show. Karl-Heinz Mueller, CEO BBB is not only the creator of the most important show for denims and upscaled sportswear, but also one of the most respected retailers with his shop 14 oz. He deserves a lot of credit for pushing denims to new heights. This time he organized the “Temple of Denim“, a very cool location in the middle of the denim base area, which gives professionals a chance to see, meet and greet creators of amazing new denim products. I have been in this business for 37 years and can say that denim always worked in cycles. The diff erence today: denim is respected as a key part of any wardrobe and a premium product that will always sell. However, what needs to be created now is fashion and innovation in denim, not just to manufacture a normal Five Pocket Jean. Give your customers a strong reason to buy a new style and not only a marketing gag or a minor change of an ordinary basic pair. There are many successfull small and big companies exhibiting here in Berlin, being amaz-ingly creative, they grab the opportunities arising. For all those negative thinking folks: there is just no more room for unprofessionalism and lazyness. Hard working pros will be greatly rewarded.
Premium Exhibitions also scored with great positive news. The young designer awards were highly appreciated at the F95 Store, with more interesting brands than ever exhibiting. Resulting in happy retailers, praising Berlin as THE destina-tion to order and increase business. Jackets and footwear are two segments where extraordinary potential is seen, lots of small innovative and creative brands are ready to deliver cool items which will truly generate strong sales. The biggest trend is color – fresh, bright, strong, neon, fruity fl avours. Second trend: prints with exotic fl owers, pretty fl orals and animal dessins.
As all fashion business is diff erent, I will not recommand single brands. But be assured, there are lots of opportuni-ties to be seen at both shows. Our special WeAr tips: Check out the über cool gadgets at B&B Treasury area for concept store items. At Premium look for hall 7 featuring some of the world‘s best avant-garde collections.Work hard, play hard, enjoy the best, enjoy Berlin!

E : The color block trend that’s been around now for quite a while will
fall out of trend next summer. We’ll see more of the metallic look that
we’ll be wearing as soon as this coming winter. Flowers are always on
trend in summer, but everything is going to be a littler cleaner after
this year’s color explosion. We are always searching for new highlights,
things that will be standouts but will also be marketable. Jades is all
about trends, so we really cannot miss anything. In some ways the
needs of our online customers can differ from the in-store customers,
so that requires us to take a different approach there.

E : It’s not yet clear what will replace this year’s dazzling colors next
summer. We expect the bright colors to be toned down a bit and pastels
and quieter colors to move into the foreground. We’ll also see a lot of
white and light beige tones combined with sweet pastels like lilac, rose,
blue and lemon. Materials will be flowier and more elegant for pants
and blouses—moving away from the earthy washed out looks for cot-
ton chinos, blazers and shirts, towards more silk pieces, ties and Etro
paisley prints. There will be a clear shift from sporty to chic and elegant.
At trade shows and fashion shows we are on the lookout more and
more for new color palettes for shirts and silk blouses, everyday-wear
dresses and fantastic blazers. We expect to see some great new chic
accessories like silk scarves with elegant prints or print combinations.

E : I hope that we will see continued attention to detail and return to
handwork, as our clients appreciate pieces which take time to create
and have an artisanal element. There also continues to be a grow-
ing concern for the ethics of fashion—what we are wearing,
how it was made, what impact on people and environment
did the production have? As a specialty store, Browns al-
ways searches for special pieces that evoke an emo-
tional response from our clients, either through
using luxurious fabrics, applying exquisite hand-
craft or embellishment, or cutting an expert-
ly-tailored, clean and elegant silhouette.
D : Ich hoffe, dass wir weiterhin eine
anhaltende Liebe zum Detail und
die Rückkehr zum Handwerk
beobachten dürfen, da unsere
Kunden Mode zu schätzen wissen,
deren Produktion Zeit in Anspruch
nimmt und handwerkliche Elemente be-
inhaltet.

E : We at Tenue de Nîmes believe business will be all about defining new
values of quality. As a result of our economic climate, consumers show
a growing demand for ‘the real deal.’ They look for value for money and
will be critical and at the same time loyal to brands. This kind of climate
also leads to nostalgia, for example, the appreciation of vintage or re-
used items, and to brands and products who proved to be trustworthy
partners back in the day. Money has not disappeared all of a sudden,
people are just spending it more wisely. We will be in search of brands
that personify something extraordinary. Whether that is the perfect
crewneck tee as still produced at a local factory in LA, or a cashmere
dress as we have never witnessed before, we know it is out there. And
we know there will always be people searching for that perfection.

E : I don’t believe in notebooks of trends, nor do I think it’s possible to
anticipate what will be en vogue. Actually, I hate the word trend, be-
cause it seeks to simplify the complexity of the fashion system. Fashion
is a cultural complex that interacts with art, architecture, cinema and
other contemporary disciplines. This complexity results in fashion that
serves just to dress and fashion that reflects what is happening around
us. At fashion trade shows and fashion weeks, I’d like to see the new
generation if Italian designers. I’d like to see more research and cour-
age and fewer unnecessary fashion shows.

V E L O C O U T U R EE: The eco-friendly bicycle and all the gadgets and special styles that
go along with it are blossoming into lucrative side business for trend-
affine retailers. In Germany, cycling is one of the most popular sports.
Numerous trade shows and public events there have confirmed this
trend. For summer even more fashion brands are launching true cycling-
chic ranges. Swiss lifestyle brand Strellson’s Rolling Style Collection is
every cyclist’s dream come true, offering the complete biking outfit as
well as the bike in cooperation with the pros at Bianchi. Included in this
collection are the business suit and the velo shirt, along with a helmet,
belt and bag. Italian denim supplier Roy Rogers has also introduced a
capsule collection just for men called Bike Division. All in black, there
are two nylon windstopper jackets, a stretch shirt with a back pocket,
two water-resistant vests with nylon hoods, a slim-fit ankle-length
chino in stretch gabardine and a series of T-shirts inspired by major
cycling events. Denim and sportswear brands such as Levi’s, Osloh Bicycle Jeans and Stone Island offer cool bike inspired denim styles
while Diesel and Lacoste Lab team up with biking professionals for
their own bicycles. Über-cool brands like Pedaled and Brooks England
promise high style. Japanese label Pedaled will make its European
debut this fall. Fashion veteran Hideto Suzuki creates the urban-casual
jeans and other pieces for men partly from repurposed military items
or natural waterproof materials. Brooks England is no stranger to
city cyclers either, producing some of the finest saddles and bike bags
since 1866, and its founder John Boultbee lends his name to the
brand’s premium clothing line. Riding a bike has never been so stylish.

Linie seinen Namen leiht.

E: Facebook, Twitter and co. are a part of everyday life for more
and more people. This is why a social media presence is an abso-
lute must for retailers. But don’t just start blogging. You’re going
to need a strategy. Websites are de rigueur for today’s companies.
But what about social media networks? After a period of initial
skepticism most companies are now looking to Web 2.0—the
number of members alone shows tremendous promise in terms
of customer base. Of course every fan and follower must first be
won over—with a great deal of effort (and expense), without really
knowing how effective those efforts will be. Newcomers to the
social media sphere usually begin with a blog on their homepage.
To do so, it’s important to determine who will write the blog and
how much time it will take. Quality before quantity is the general
rule of thumb: The intern is probably not the right person for this
huge responsibility. A new entry should be made at least daily to
hold the interest of the readers. And ditch the usual PR speak. Good
bloggers are authentic and believable; they communicate at eye
level and understand that interaction is essential. A blogger with an
actual name is much more believable, for example, »Holt’s Muse«
is the author of the Holt Renfrew blog. On the site‘s right sidebar,
visitors will also see the brand‘s Twitter feed—because once you‘ve
mastered blogging, you can branch out into social media networks.
The most important of these are Facebook, Twitter and YouTube,
but this could change at the drop of a hat. A Facebook page is easy
to set up. The new Timeline allows users to tell their whole story
and add milestones to highlight major events. These milestones
stretch across the entire page, standing apart from the other con-
tent in Timeline’s two-column design. Content taken from blogs
should be tailored specifically to Facebook (even more important
for Twitter). Contests are one way to see fan numbers jump; just by
clicking »Like,« fans are entered to win. All of these platforms can
be connected as well. You can link to Facebook from your website
and vice versa. Print campaigns can also link to these resources by
integrating QR codes into marketing materials, for example, the
way Wormland has done. When Selfridges introduces a product
on Facebook, it is always accompanied by a link to the online shop.
Harrods goes one step further: Fans curate mood boards on
Pinterest, Harrods chooses the best five, and then the Facebook
community votes on the winner. And adidas Neo has connected
Web 2.0 with the real world. Customers in the shop photograph or
film themselves using a multimedia mirror and upload the picture
directly to the internet so other fans can comment on their new
outfit. All of that said, it may take a professional to evaluate such
social media campaigns. High traffic does not necessarily translate
into real interest in the company. Monitoring tools and agencies
specializing in social media can be a huge help.
adidas Neo, Nuremberg

www.facebook.com/WeArmagazine
muss her. Ohne Website kann heutzutage kein Unternehmen
bestehen.
Dort liest man
Jahren darstellen, dazwischen sollte man genügend »Höhepunkte«
(Milestones) einbauen.

E: The fusion of fashion, technology and art is an accelerating
trend, and here’s an update on where to go for new stimulat-
ing shopping experiences. Desigual opened a new concept
shop and showroom called La vida Chula (life is cool) in
Barcelona. This 800 m² space decorated with vintage furniture
and several thousand glass bottles has no salespeople, but
personal shoppers familiar with the collection handle custom-
ers’ needs. The store carries no stock; customers choose from
around 1200 samples that are on display. For online orders,
the merchandise is delivered without shipping charges to a
house or hotel within 48 hours. The experience is intimate and
special, a time to relax in the Desigual world while enjoying
carefree shopping. In Tokyo, Teamlab Hanger, developed by
Teamlab, provides an interactive stimulus at shops. When
you pick up clothing or accessories with a Teamlab hanger,
the embedded sensor is activated and corresponding images
are displayed on in-store monitors along with the product’s
story. This enables retailers to convey the product’s appeal to
customers visually and creatively. Also, by incorporating these
visuals into a display, more expressive visual merchandising
becomes possible. Information can be gathered about which
products customers chose, amount of time they spent looking,
etc., and this can be analyzed together with the purchase data.
Paris department store Printemps continues to collaborate
with Nick Knight’s Showstudio, and during fashion week it
unrolled an interactive show window. Along with airing 3D im-
ages that filmed looks from Paco Rabanne and Gareth Pugh, it
also mixes in photos contributed by Showstudio viewers. These
beautiful visuals are leaving a lasting impression on people on
the street. How digital technology is artistically incorporated
in order to make this added value a plus for shopping seems
to be the key to success.
Desigual, La vida Chula, Barcelona.

Schaufenster.

E: The theme of this year’s Bread & Butter from July 4–6
is The Rock, as a reflection of the strength and persistence
of the Bread & Butter trade show held on the grounds of
the former Berlin-Tempelhof Airport. The divisions are the
same—among others, L.O.C.K., Urban Superior for Men and
Women, Sport & Street, Street Fashion and Treasury—and
at the heart of it all, of course, is denim! To make a denim
statement that’s loud and clear, the Denim Base will gravitate
more towards retail. Outside in the Luna Park we have set up
the 3,000 m2 Berlin-Tempel of Denim to showcase premium
denim brands with a special focus on women’s denim col-
lections and denim suppliers. Every creative facet of denim
is represented in the Tempel of Denim. The new platform is
a never-before-seen concept and a bold statement, a wave
of indigo ready to take the retail industry by storm. Among
those expected to attend are 7 For All Mankind and New
York pop-up store 3x1. Eating is not the only thing we can
do with an extra long table—we can also use it as a runway.
The action continues after hours: The Sport & Street Festival
with special musical entertainment takes place at an offsite
location in Berlin on two different evenings. The exhibitors
have also put together some incredible events for the BBB,
including the 30th birthday celebration of Guess, the G-Star
fashion show and a Tom Tailor polo tournament.
D: Vom 4. bis 6 . Juli lautet das Motto der Bread & Butter
diesmal The Rock.
Urban Superior Men und Women, Sport & Street, Streetfashion
all Mankind und als Pop-up Store der New Yorker Laden 3x1.
Musikprogramm statt. Darüber hinaus wird es auf der BB-
Veranstaltung großartige Events der Aussteller geben, wie
der 30. Geburtstag von Guess, die G-Star Fashion Show und
Poloturniere von Tom Tailor.

E: Premium is the international fashion trade show for the high-
end segment, including men’s and womenswear, progressive
sportswear, designer denim, promising newcomers, shoes and
exclusive accessories. It will take place at Station Berlin from July
4–6. Premium thrives on a mix of high-end collections, and every
season the brands are curated anew for a fresh mix that keeps up
with the market’s ever-changing demands. For the summer edition
we have made some major changes to the division of the halls:
Over the past seasons we have expanded Hall 7 and then installed
the new glass façade on Hall 3. Now we have also given Hall 5, our
menswear hall, a terrace that can be used as an exhibition space
or as a lounge area. Hall 2, the designated restaurant area in the
past, has now been transformed into an exhibition space for luxury
jewelry, watches, bags, belts, hats and scarves, as well as cosmetics
and fragrances. Accessories were previously housed in Hall 4, but
the focus there is now shoes. As always during the summer sea-
son, Premium will take advantage of both the indoor and outdoor
exhibition areas. Premium continually adds new international
brands to its portfolio, becoming more and more exclusive with
each passing season. For the first time, a group of Korean designers
will participate along with three Turkish newcomers as part of the
“Istanbul Next” program. The turnout is also expected to include
creatives from Austria, Holland, Japan and Romania. Twice a year
the Young Designers Award recognizes three talented up-and-
comers, giving them a chance to present their work as well.
D: Die Premium vom 4. bis 6. Juli in der Station-Berlin vereint als
internationale Fachmesse alle hochwertigen Segmente - Her-

The Urban Art team Low Bros consists of two brothers, Qbrk and
Nerd, born in Hamburg, northern Germany. They currently live and
work in Berlin. When they were children the two brothers loved to
draw and invented their own little stories and fantasy worlds while
playing in the backyard or being in the countryside. You’ll still find
both influences, the urban and natural in their work today. Later they
started to paint graffiti and where also co-founders of »The Weird«,
which was founded together with Nychos, Cone, Hr. v. Bias, Dxtr,
L O w
Rookie, Look and Vidam from Peachbeach and Frau Isa. The
brothers have always painted together, but it took while before
they began to create their characters together and develop their
own common, geometric style. Ever since, they have gone by
the name Low Bros.

chende Ausbildung. Die Fluktuation ist hoch. Schulungen
sind meistens kurze Produkt- und Markenpräsentationen
ohne Erfolgsmessung und Nachhaltigkeit.
Hier bietet die WeAr Academy die passende Lösung. Das
Team der WeAr Academy besteht aus Retailspezialisten,
Verkaufsprofis wie Martin Attallah, Trainern und techni-

Salesmen and women are much more than their job title
suggests. They are brand ambassadors. Whether or not
brand image is transferred to the customer depends on
them. They are fundamental to commercial success.
Nevertheless, most salespeople have no professional
training. Turnover is high and training usually involves brief
product and brand presentations without any system in
place for measuring and maintaining success.
WeAr has the perfect solution. The WeAr Academy team
is made up of retail specialists, sales pro Martin Attallah,
trainers and technical experts with years of experience
with premium brands in the apparel industry.
