POWER STATION
Power stations make electricity. They usually
burn coal, oil or natural gas to work the
generating machinery.
Disadvantages -
Coal, oil and gas supplies are gradually
running out, and burning so much
of them is probably adding to the
greenhouse effect, which causes global
warming.

These are the gases in the Earth!s atmosphere that
cause the greenhouse effect:
The Earth!s atmosphere naturally contains these
gases, over the past few decades their presence has
increased +, causing the termperature of the Earth to
increase

Nuclear plants use uranium as a fuel to produce power.
One of the problems of nuclear power is the permanent
storage of spent radioactive fuel. This fuel is toxic for
centuries.
Nuclear Accidents
28 March 1979.
Three Mile Island-accident involved a
small leak of water from the reactor system
that wasn!t correctly diagnosed.
Saturday April 26, 1986 at 1:23:58 a.m.
Chernobyl-On reactor 4 suffered a catastrophic
steam explosion that resulted in a fire, a series of
additional explosions, and a nuclear meltdown.

SOLAR POWER
A solar power station uses the Sun's heat to
make steam, and drive a generator to make
electricity.
Advantages +
S olar energy is free - it needs no fuel and
produces no waste or pollution.
Disadvantages -
Very expensive to build solar power stations.
It is necessary a very sunny climate

When the wind turns the blades of a windmill,
it spins a turbine inside a small generator to
produce electricity, just like a big coal power
plant.
Advantages +
Wind energy is free - it needs no fuel
and produces no waste or pollution.
Disadvantages -
They have a visual impact.
