Objectives
To orient students about water conservation
To sensitize the students about the need for water
conservation
To develop habits of preserving and conservingwater among students
Help them develop a healthy respect for this non-
finite dwindling non-renewable resource
To help them implement strategies of waterconservation on campus and at homes
To enable students to become advocates of water
conservation

Water Conservation
Encompasses the policies, strategies andactivities to manage fresh water as a sustainable
resource to protect the water environment and to
meet current and future human demand
It means using our water wisely and caring for it
properly as each of us depend on water for life
Video shows the need for water conservation –
some facts about water and the need for it.

Water Scarcity: Need for
Conservation Scarcity involves water stress, water
shortage or deficits, and water crisis.
Water Stress: the difficulty of obtaining
sources of fresh water for use, because ofdepleting resources
Water Crisis: situation where
the available potable,unpolluted water within
a region is less than that
region's demand

Some Facts of Water Crisis
over 1.5 billion people across the worlddon’t have access to clean drinking
water.
almost 4 million people die each yearfrom water related diseases.
water and sanitation crisis claims more
lives through disease than any warclaims through guns
every 21 seconds, a child dies from a
water-related illness

Scarcity…
abstract concept to many and a starkreality for others.
result of myriad
environmental
political
economic and
social forces.

Reason for Water Scarcity
man’s greed,
arrogance and
Carelessnesshave created this situation
So it is upto us, human beings, to put this
right, hence the need for waterconservation.

Need 20% of the world's population do not have
access to safe drinking water
40% do not have sufficient water for adequate
living and hygiene
More than 2.2 million people die each yearfrom diseases related to contaminated
drinking water.
India with 16% of the world's population has
only 4% of the fresh water resources.
In many rural areas, women still have to walk
a distance of about 2.5 kms to reach the
source of water. On an average, a rural

humans have proved to be inefficientwater users.
According to the United Nations, water
use has grown at more than twice therate of population increase in the last
century.
By 2025, an estimated 1.8 billion peoplewill live in areas plagued by water
scarcity, with two-thirds of the world's
population living in water-stressed
regions as a result of use, growth, and

Need About 50% of all available water is
transboundary
i.e., water located in the rivers, lakes or
groundwater systems of two or more
countries and cooperation over this water is often
troublesome.
Around two thirds of the world'stransboundary rivers lack agreements
between the countries that share them
This linked to political conflicts in many
of the sharing regions, has meant that

In education: Enabling students to spend more time
in school than gathering and waiting for water Health: Safe water, clean hands, healthy bodies.
Time lost to sickness is reduced and people can
get back to the work of lifting themselves out of
poverty. Famine and hunger: Access to water leads to food
security. With less crop loss, hunger is reduced.
Access to clean water helps:

Poverty: Access to water can break the cycle of
poverty. The communities we serve are ready to
grow.
The lack of water is an insurmountable obstacle tohelping oneself.
You can't grow food, you can't build housing, you
can't stay healthy, you can't stay in school and
you can't keep working.
Without clean water, the possibility of breaking out
of the cycle of poverty is incredibly slim

Goals of Water Conservation
Sustainability:
To ensure availability for future generations,
the withdrawal of fresh water from an
ecosystem should not exceed its natural
replacement rate
Energy conservation:
Water pumping, delivery and waste watertreatment facilities consume a significant amount
of energy.
In some regions of the world over 15% of
total electricity consumption is devoted to

Goals contd…
Habitat conservation:
Minimizing human water use helps
to preserve fresh water habitats for
local wildlife and migrating
waterfowl, it reduces the need to build new
dams and other water diversion
infrastructures therefore, human displacement and
can be avoided.
All of these necessitate water

Ways to Conserve Water
1. Check faucets and pipes for leaks. A small drip can waste 20 gallons of water per
day.
2. Don't use the toilet as an ashtray or wastebasket.
Every time you flush five to seven gallons ofwater is wasted.
3. Put a little food coloring in your toilet tank. If,
without flushing, the color begins to appear in
the bowl within 30 minutes, you have a leak thatshould be repaired
immediately..

5. Install water-saving shower heads and low-flowfaucet aerators
5. long, hot showers can use 5-10 gallons every
every minute. Limit your showers to the time it
takes to soap up, wash down and rinse off.6. Do not keep the water running while brushing
your teeth. Just wet your brush and fill a glass
for mouth rinsing.
7. Fill the sink with a few inches of warm water totinse your razor with far less waste of water.

8. don't leave the water running for rinsing dishes. If your have a double-basin, fill one with soapy
water and one with rinse water.
9. Just rinse vegetables in a stoppered sink or a
pan of clean water.

Rainwater Harvesting
This essentially means collecting rainwater
on the roofs of buildings and storing it
underground for later use.
this recharging arrests groundwater
depletion, it also raises the declining water table and
can help augment water supply.
It is essential to stop the decline ingroundwater levels, arrest sea-water
ingress, i.e.
prevent sea-water from moving

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/water-conservation-final 29/36
Some Methods: In parts of rural India, floodwater quickly
flows to the rivers, which then dryup soon after the rains stop.
this water can be held back, and be
allowed to seep into the ground and
recharge the groundwater supply.
Town planners and civic authority in manycities in India are introducing bylaws making
rainwater harvesting compulsory in all new
structures.

Benefits:
Increases water availability
Checks the declining water table
Is environment friendly
Improves the quality of groundwater
through the dilution of fluoride, nitrate,
and salinity
Prevents soil erosion and flooding
especially in urban areas

Conclusion
Water conservation is a much largerissue now than it ever was in the past.
Small fixes can make a big difference
We have an obligation to our future
Water is life; the number one necessity
for survival.
we conserve now to prevent futureproblems,
we need to teach the coming
generations the importance of our water .

Activities…
1. Get together in a group and prepare a Save
Water Campaign for deployment on campus
2. Develop flyers to distribute on campus on water
conservation
3. Group Discussion on ways of conserving water.4. Develop a set a slogans for water conservation.
