Mokuhanga Demo with Pau l FurneauxBoth days, 12—12.45pmGallery back room

Many people will be familiar with the image of the huge crashing wave “Great Wave of Kanagawa” with Mount Fuji in the background by the famous Katsushika Hokusai. During this demo contemporary Scottish artist Paul Furneaux will reveal some of the techniques used.

Paul will highlight some of the skills involved in hand printing Japanese woodblock printing, illustrating through demonstration the control that hand printing and brushed application of colour can give. Northern Landscapes with Georgia Rose MurraySaturday 5th December, 12—2pmStudio 302

Participants may choose to reinterpret the views objectively or to express their reactions by creating more abstract painted marks. The paintings will be done on folded card so participants can give their finished works as Christmas cards if they wish.

Painting Demo with David ForsterBoth days, 4—4:45Studio 306David Forster’s intensely wrought landscape paintings refer to the traditions of the 18th and 19th centuries. Patriothall art gallery and studios were created in 1988 when WASPS Studios converted the old Co-op bakery into a studio complex and gallery space.

The lease was due to expire in 2005 without the option of a renewal, threatening the loss of the building which provided studio space for over 50 artists. The artists launched a campaign to save the building and the building was purchased by Wasps and refurbished in 2004, securing the future of these fantastic studios for use by generations of artists to come. Patriothall Gallery is currently led by a committee of artists working within the building and more information about the gallery can be found on its websitewww.patriothallgallery.co.uk

Patriothall’s Open Studios offers an excellent opportunity to meet the artists, view their finished work, watch live demonstrations or attend a workshop. Refreshments will also be available throughout the weekend.
