Walter R . Dornberger, 84, German general during Wo rld Wa r II who supervised the cons truction of the firs t guided mi ssile, developed by Wernher von Bra un; in Baden- Wiirtt emberg, West Germany. Aft er the perfection of the V-2 rocket at Peenemiinde, Germany, in 1942, Dornberger directed the bombardment of --London with V-2s late in the war. Dornberger la ter remarked that the Nazis had lost because his colleagues "were mo re interested in the possibilities of space travel than victo ry in war." After spending two years in a Britis h prison camp, Da rnberger became a U.S. ci tizen and eventually vice president of Bell Aerosystems Co. i11 Buffalo, N.Y.
