CLASSIC COOL
1.0
Walter’s progressive design offers an exciting new landmark that perfectly
complements its dynamic surroundings. A pioneering approach has forgone traditional architecture in favour of a simple yet strong and innovative structure. Integral to the building’s
cutting-edge style is the rhythmic natural concrete and glass façade. This bold contrast creates an incredible outside and inside experience as it mediates
between light and shade, sunlight and shadow, and offers both a private escape and seamless connection to its energetic
neighbourhood. A development that epitomises classic cool, Walter is your key
to accessing a lifestyle to match.

A CONVERSATION WITH ROSS GARDAM– FEATURE LIGHTING DESIGNER
1. Tell us a little about your background and yourself
up until now? My background is in industrial
design and after graduating I worked in interior design in Australia and
the UK. In 2007 I returned to Melbourne and established my own
business specialising in furniture and lighting. Each product is hand crafted in Melbourne, Australia, by local artisans and makers. Pairing
traditional craft techniques with high end manufacturing technology results
in products which are elegant, accessible and made for today.
All products are designed in my Melbourne studio and embody a unique contemporary aesthetic.
2. Who inspires you and your work? Any favourite Australian
designers at the moment? It is important for me to maintain and develop an original aesthetic
and I like this to be driven in part by process and honest use of materials. I am of course constantly inspired by design, architecture and photography in Melbourne. To name a few, I like
the work of young designer Tom Skeehan, all round good guys and well resolved products, Clare Cousins work
is amazing and have to mention the photography of both Haydn Cattach
and Scott Newett.
3. What inspired the Touch Light pendant? Tell us about the process?
The Touch Pendant actually transformed a number of times before it hit its final form that you see today.
The light was originally designed for a Space/Edra design competition
and I wanted to design a pendant light you could reach up and grab
and take around with you as an ambient light source. This is how the product received its name however it was simplified for market. The first production pieces where made from hand blown glass which is a beautiful
process. It was always intended that the lights would have a number of material
options, copper, brass, glass and anodised aluminium. This has made a
versatile product and combined with its paired back aesthetic has allowed the materiality to come to the forefront.
4. Why and how is light important to you? What will it
do to a person’s space? I find lighting really emotive, people are drawn to it in quite a primal way. It is interesting exhibiting products in
public space and seeing how people are drawn from across the room to touch
and interact with a lighting piece.
Light can define an interior, create highlights and accents throughout a
space and make it feel like home.
5. What does the future hold? Without sounding too boring, more of the same. Two new lights will be
released in 2014 along with two small collections of furniture. I have a
relatively small collection of furniture and lighting so I am keen to grow
this range and explore working with new materials and processes.
