Week 1 Term 1 2019
Dear Families,
Welcome back! I’d like to warmly welcome all new students and their families to our beautiful school. I hope you’ve enjoyed many quality moments over the holiday period.
It’s been a very settled and positive start to the year. The focus of this week has been on building relationships and reinforcing our school expectations, including exploring our school values and “What does it mean to be a good learner?”
At our welcome assembly on Tuesday, I spoke to children about the importance and benefits of living our school values and ‘challenge’. Instead of stating, “Just do your best” replace this with, “Challenge, yourself, if your learning is not challenging you, then, you’re not learning”. Learning should be hard and it should be messy which requires being true to our value of ‘persistence’. Please continue to encourage and support your children to work through their challenges. When this happens, amazing learning takes place both socially and academically.
If you haven’t already done so, please like our Facebook page to keep updated with our news. In case you’ve missed our last post, I’ll repeat some of the content in this report. I have much pleasure in announcing the appointment of Ms Samantha McDonald to the role of Arts teacher. Samantha comes with a passion and expertise in music. She will initiate our music program and facilitate the choir. For the first time, our school will be involved in the Festival of Music program later in the year. We are looking forward to having our school come alive with music!
I’d like to welcome back Ms Tori Smallwood as Year 5 teacher in Rm 9. Tori completed her final year practicum in 2017 with our exceptional teacher, Ms Gemma Donnell, and undertook a year of employment in Whyalla in 2018. Her passion and effervescent personality will no doubt add much value to our school.
Over the holidays we’ve revamped the Techno Funky room to become a food preparation area. I’m looking forward to teaching Year 5, 6 and 7 about making healthy food choices and preparing simple, nutritious foods. This is another exciting addition to our curriculum which not only teaches children valuable life skills but enables them to apply literacy and numeracy concepts to real life scenarios.
On behalf of the Wallaroo PS Community, we congratulate Brittny and Chad Hicks on the arrival of their beautiful daughter, Willow on the 18th January. Mrs Hicks will be on leave for the remainder of the year.
We look forward to catching up with you at our Acquaintance Evening, on Wednesday 6th February beginning at 5.30pm.
Wishing you all every successful year!
Warmest regards, Julie

NEW STAFF Hello! My name is Samantha McDonald, and I am the new Music and Arts teacher at Wallaroo Primary School. I have already felt so welcomed into the school community, and am excited about meeting you all in due course. My passion for the performing arts is very strong, having performed in bands, as a piano/singer soloist, and in musical and theatrical productions for many years. I am a huge advocate for the importance of music and arts education. It truly is an Incredible experience and honour to watch children as they realise they can be successful in music and the arts, and my goal is always to inspire a lifelong love of this area in my students. My background also includes owning several businesses, including one where I trained adults in positive mindset strategies, and I love putting these strategies to use in my classroom. I believe talent in the arts is grown, rather than absolutely inherent, and therefore I always aim to encourage and motivate my students to give their best efforts and be the best possible version of themselves. I really look forward to this brand new school year, and being part of the Wallaroo Primary School community. Samantha McDonald Music and Arts Teacher

Welcome to 2019!
To kick start reading we are having a mini Book Fair on Acquaintance Night.
We will be having the fair in the Errington Room.
Unlike our August Book Week fairs we will not be selling posters and variety items such as
pencils and erasers – just books.
A flier will be sent home shortly showing a few of the many books available. Every family
that makes a purchase will be placed into a raffle draw with three prizes to be won!
I look forward to seeing you there. Mrs Seddon.
