VUKOVIWHO: Janine Shilstone (leadvocals/synth), Hamish Reilly (gui-tar), Jason Trotter (bass/backingvocals), Martyn Lynch (drums)WHERE: Kilwinning/Troon,AyrshireFOR FANS OF: Biffy Clyro,Paramore, Skunk AnansieJIM SAYS: Incredibly, theserockers only got together sixmonths ago but are already oneof Scotland’s hottest young acts.Jason and Martyn were play-

ing in a three-piece calledWolves, a band I’d featured onmy weekly podcast.Hamish joined towards the

end, with Janine soon replacingthe original singer, and Vukovi— actually Serbian for “wolves”— was born.Their first recordings were

hardly out of the studio beforethey’d found their way on tonational radio.Janine could become Scot-

land’s greatest female rocksinger since Shirley Manson. With a sound that’s accessible

enough to break into the popmarket, it’s going to be fascinat-ing to see how they progress. They’ve just recorded a ses-

sion for Amazing Radio (hear it atamazingradio.co.uk/sessions),and they could break out of theScottish scene before music fanshere even get to know them.Hopefully they’ll shine at some

of the festivals, as they’re cer-tainly one of the most excitingnew acts I’ve heard recently.MORE: myspace.com/vukovibandQ Hear Jim on Amazing Radio,Sunday 2-4pm (DAB digital radio& online) — jimgellatly.com

ELECTRO pop king MikePosner does what his mumtells him.The chart-topping singer wasall set to quit university and liveit up a few years back. But then his old dear told himthat just wasn’t happening.Mike, 23, was forced to finishhis Sociology degree at theprestigious Duke University inNorth Carolina — where formerUS President Richard Nixonstudied. He said: “I signed with Sonyafter my third year — so I wasall ready to drop out as Iwanted to be a rock star.“But Mum was like, ‘I thinkyou’re going to go back to schooland finish, Michael’ — so in mylast year I had to balance both.“It was really tough and I’mglad I finished with pretty goodmarks.”Mike, from Detroit, also didwell with his music while study-

ing. His million-selling debut sin-gle Cooler Than Me was a prod-uct of his university days.He explained: “I recorded thatin my dorm room.“I was using a Dell computerthat had a virus and softwarethat I’d pirated off the internet, plus a really cheap microphone. So it was pretty special to haveit go as far as it did.”His album, 31 Minutes To Take-off, has brought similar success.Mike has been showcasing it inAustralia and all over Europeand he brings the party to anend at Glasgow’s ABC tomorrownight. He said: “I can’t wait to get toScotland — I’ve never been andI’m a blank slate on what toexpect.“This tour has been amazing.I’m just so grateful to be outhere — the shows have beencrazy.”Mike has also been working ontracks for grime sensation Laby-

rinth’s album. And he insiststhat’s where he is happiest. He said: “I’m writing all thetime. They call me a studio ratas I don’t go out to party asmuch as people expect — I havemy fun in the studio.“That’s my home. I’ve onlybeen singing for two years. Mostpeople see me and assume thatI’m a long-time singer, but I con-sider myself a producer.“I’ve been doing that since Iwas 13 and I only started to singbecause nobody bought my beatsuntil I used them myself.“I really built myself up fromthe ground back home.“And I want to repeat that asmuch as possible here, so itmakes sense for me to come overand to be touring.“I’ll be back after this tourwith a bigger show and a biggerproduction, so all you guys cansee me grow, too.”Q For gig tickets and downloadscheck out mikeposner.com
