WHAT’S NEW WHAT’S COMING
FRONT OF
HOUSE
APPRECIATION
WEEK
Our Front of House team (House Managers and Tier Leaders) work tirelessly along the volunteers to make magic happen and pull off miracles. In the past year alone, outside of the normal scope of shows, they rose to the occasion with the Democratic Debates and most recently, the NFL Honors event. With this being said, during this month of love, we would like to declare the week of 2/17—2/24 — Front of House Appreciation Week!
During this week, do what you can to show your appreciation to the Front of House team, House Managers and Tier Leaders alike.
It can be handwritten cards, signed group cards, a gift card, a knitted scarf, bake or bring your favorite food or dessert (mind you, one of our HMs has a horrific peanut allergy so no peanuts please!) whatever and however you would like to show appreciation, let’s take time out to thank them for all that they do for us!

SEASONED USHER STATUS
Suggestion: A picture of
Hamilton cast for volunteers
that complete their Hamilton
Commitment
Answer: I think this sounds
like a fabulous idea. I will ask
our Marketing and Program-
ming department to see if it is
possible.
Suggestion: Commercials are
being streamed on the wall
in the lobbies. Why not use
that to Wall Cast shows for
the late guests waiting to be
seated?
Answer: That is a very good
question. I will ask and get an
answer back on this.
Suggestion: Please be aware
that the lighting in the Ziff
clubhouse is dim, very dark
and hurts some of our eyes.
Answer: The clubhouse re-
cently received a spruce up
and part of that included
better lighting! Let us know
how it is!

CARPOOLING
Carpooling is a great way to get to and from Arsht. Not only do you save time, money, gas
and a parking space you have fun talking to other ushers before and after the show. It is al-
ways fun to talk about your night at the Arsht and the people that you have met while work-
ing a show. With our carpool group we try to pick the same shows which exposes us to
shows we might not have worked. The group allows you to explore other options and show
types. You do not have to be alone when you are driving at night. Sometimes our carpool
group of 5 brings some snacks and beverage for after the show to let the traffic out of the
garage lighten up before we leave. We always have fun getting to know each other and we
have all become good friends. We all meet at a central location and some only ride one way
because they take public transportation from work to get to Arsht in the daytime.

An Advisory Team Meeting took place on Monday, February 3, 2020.
Please see below agenda items that were discussed and the results:
Arsht Volunteer Polo Shirts— We discussed pricing and what events would
be ideal for these shirts. We will keep you updated.
Volunteer Pins— We are working on a fail safe system to figure out a way to
reward volunteer pins to those who have earned them in the month that they hit
the milestone. We will keep you posted.
Volunteer Dinner Theme—the theme for this year’s dinner has been select-
ed! Stay tuned for the announcement in the next few months!
Volunteer Parking— We tried to come up with solutions for the volunteer
parking situation that was in our control. See the article by Betty on carpooling.
Volunteer Calendar — It was asked if audio description hours can show on
the schedule history tab. IT was able to make the adjustment.
Our next meeting will take place on Monday, March 2, 2020. Please
e-mail us or be sure to notify your advisory team members with any
suggestions.

“It speaks of the very es-

there is Ubuntu, then you

You, you threw this city away
You're not gonna knock us down
We'll get back up again
You may have hurt us
But I promise we'll be stronger
We're not gonna let you win
We're putting up a fight
You may have brought the dark
But together we will shine the light.
We're gonna stand tall
Gonna raise up our voices so we never fall
We're done with all your lit-tle games
We're tired of hearing that we're too young to ever
make a change
Whoooaaa we will be some-thing special
Whooooaaa we're gonna shine (shine)
A Day of LOVE Turned to HATE HEALING with music
Drama Class was alarmingly interrupted February 14th, 2018. Mar-gery Stoneman Douglas high school was under attack by a former student. Andrea Pena and Sawyer Garrity were in class but heard the shots and ultimately lost fond friends.
All of South Florida, including Miami Shores was affected. Unfortu-nately, on Valentine’s day our hearts were broken. As was the entire MSD’s community.
However, in the face of sorrow, the human spirit rises. These two young women, high school students, needed to ‘deal with’ their pain.
Turning to the arts, their music proved their salvation, shared with the entire community and today the en-tire world.
SHINE MSD, the song they co-wrote just days after the tragedy, has traveled far and wide, sung by profes-sionals and those among us who are captivated with the refrain:
We’re tired of hearing that we’re too young to ever make a change,
Whoooooaa we will be something special
Whooooaaa we’re gonna shine
They’d spent an hour and a half, hiding in a hot, cramped closet with 60 classmates. They heard the gunfire, it seemed unreal. Sadly it was real.
“Music is the most accessible and researched medium of art and healing, and there has been a principal emphasis on the soothing, capacity of music and its ability to offset overly tech-nological approaches to care”, write authors Heather L. Stuck-ey, a member of Pennsylvania State University’s College of Medicine and co-author Jeremy Nobel, with the Department of Health Policy and management, Harvard School of Public Health.
The girls hadn’t studied this, they just knew it instinctively. Says Sawyer “I know Andrea and I, we both turn to music – it’s something we both turn to when we’re feeling an emotion”. “And I think what happened at our school, we were just left feeling so many emotions that we didn’t know how to deal with. And so, we just kin-da poured it all into this song”. (see lyrics in blue in column to the left).
And from that hopeful song came Shine MSD, a non-profit organization, to raise relief funds for victims and their families and provide mental health programs centered around the arts. The girls anticipate the healing and mental health needs in their community to be a continuous, ongoing effort with the potential to expand the scope of their work to other individuals and communities in need around the world. We're tired of hear-ing that we're too young to ever make a change…defiantly challenged by these two amazing young women. The world watched as other MDS students took a more political path, culminating in the march for Our Lives, March 24, 2018 with thousands gathering from around the world, supporting legislation to prevent gun violence in the United States. We came to know both Emma Gonzalez and David Hogg, young political activists dominating the national news. Their Twitter hash tags: #neveragain and #enoughisenough, are the same message as
We're putting up a fight
You may have brought the dark
But together we will shine the light.
A further healing art is the Instrument of Hope, was created by master brass technician, instrument maker, Josh Landress. The trumpet crafted from expelled brass bullet casings, now travels the world, in the hands of both famous artists and amateurs. It made its debut on Broadway in Oklahoma and tours the country spreading awareness as the Shine students perform and share their story.
One of the positive results of Shine MSD is Camp Shine, a ground-breaking summer program designed and run by leading national creative arts therapists, developed specifically for the MSD students and the Parkland community. The focus is on fun and storytelling through a variety of art forms, allowing students to find ther-apeutic value in activities like storytelling, painting, songwriting, photography, drama, lyric analysis and
graffiti and street art. Whatever money “Shine” raises will help fund a nonprofit the girls’ parents have set up, #ShineMSD. Its aim is to en-courage shooting survivors to release their pain through poetry, art, music, dance, and any other creative outlet.
