Our eyes look back with thanksgiving. Our eyes
look forward in hope. Therefore, with
thanksgiving for the past and hope for the future,
let us dedicate ourselves and our lives to the
mission which God gives us as the Church of
Jesus Christ in this place.
And with hope and thanksgiving, we say
together… Thanks be to God!
In Christ,
Pastor Paul

th. The deadline for submitting
Annual Reports for each committee is December 15
th.
Save the Date Our Annual Congregational Meeting, Part 1 will be Sunday, November 18th

God has blessed us and
brought us to this time.
God has blessed us and
brought us to this place.
For 62 years, God has made us His witnesses in
the world.
For 62 years, God has placed us in loving
fellowship with one another.
These are a few of the words that we shared
together on October 7th as part of our St.
Matthias Commemoration, where we
remembered and gave thanks to God for all that
He’s done for us for the past 62 years. As we get
ready to celebrate Thanksgiving this year, we
have a lot to be thankful for.
The baptisms of Benton Lee Blankenship, Alex
Cook, and Wynslow Grant Santavy, the
reception of new members into our church
family, the celebration of the First Holy
Communion for Sophia Bertoline and Lex
Oestreicher, delivering over 500 pounds of
produce to the Westmoreland County Food Bank
through our Community Garden, and so much
more! And we haven’t even mentioned all of
our relationships, abilities, and possessions. As
we get ready to celebrate Thanksgiving this year,
we have a lot of blessings to be thankful for.
And God is the one who provides them all.
With all that in mind, let’s reflect on some
additional words from our St. Matthias
Commemoration…

Sun of Righteousness
The sun is often used as a symbol for Christ, especially during church-year seasons that use prophetic imagery
and focus on Jesus’ second coming. Malachi 4:2 — “But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness
shall rise with healing in its wings” (ESV) — is echoed in the Christmas hymn
“Hark, the Herald Angels Sing”: Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Sun of Righteousness! Light and life to all he brings,
ATTENTION MEMBERS In April, St. Matthias began examining its membership registry. According to our church constitution, to remain on the registry, a member must contribute or commune once in five years. This activity must be recorded in church records. Those who have not contributed or communed in the past 5 years, and who wish to remain a member of St. Matthias, may contact the church office at (724) 834-2457. A letter will be sent out on September 1
st to those who are eligible to be
removed. Those who have not responded will
be removed from our church registry by Council vote at the Council meeting on November 12
th.
Thanksgiving Eve Worship
We invite you to start your thanksgiving celebration by worshipping with us on Thanksgiving Eve at
7pm. It’s a very brief and meaningful way to give thanks to God for all that He so generously and abundantly provides all year long!
Saturday After Thanksgiving Worship Don’t forget there will be no worship service on Saturday, November 24th due to the holiday
weekend!
Poinsettias For Christmas Eve
Once again this year we are offering
6” pots of Poinsettias to decorate our church for
Christmas. There will be a choice of red or white. They will be $9.00 each. If you would like to assist with the decorations and have a plant
for your own use after the Christmas Eve service, please fill out the form included in the newsletter. Forms will also be available on the
table in the narthex. Please have all order forms completed and returned to the office by Sunday, December 9th.

October 8, 2018
St. Matthias Church Council met Monday evening, October 8, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at the church. All Council members were present
with the exception of Joe Schmitt. Also present were Eldora Crist, Treasurer, Eliot Moore, Tina Weimer, and Pastor Paul.
Devotions were read by Norb Georges.
President Fred Oestreicher called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. Agenda was reviewed and presented for additions or changes.
Motion was made by Wayne Himler and seconded by Andrew Harrold to accept the agenda as presented. Motion carried. Minutes
of the September 10, 2018 Council meeting were reviewed for additions or changes. Motion was made by Andrew Harrold and
seconded by Wayne Himler to accept the minutes as presented. Motion carried.
Treasurer’s Report: The September Treasurer ’s Repor t was presented and reviewed by Eldora Cr ist, Treasurer . Ending
balance in the checking account was $1,964.99. A motion was made by Andrew Harrold, seconded by Wayne Himler, and carried to
accept the Treasurer’s Report as presented and file it for Audit.
Pastor’s Report: Pastor Paul’s wr itten repor t for September was presented. Pastor repor ted that he had an Interment of
Vern Adams into the St. Matthias Garden of the Saints and attended the viewing for Jim Himler, brother of Wayne Himler. He had a
baptism of Wynslow Grant Santavy on October 7 and home visits with Constance Gazze and Lorraine Howell. Pastor attended the
Synod’s Resource Center Advisory Board Meeting, and also attended two meetings and a day-long workshop on Friday, September
21 with the Synod’s Revitalization Project. He met with Carol Bost of Church Mutual Insurance on September 17 to review next
year’s policy premium, which was a reduced amount. Pastor attended the Assistant to the Bishop’s meeting at Salem Lutheran
Church in Delmont on September 18. He attended the Al-Anon Anniversary meeting at St. Matthias on September 25.
Communications: We received a notification from Church Mutual Insurance that ter ror ist insurance would be $22 for
annual coverage.
Concerns: None.
Committee Reports were given.
New Business:
Florist: We recently used Thomas’ Flower Shop for our Sunday morning flowers. Valetta noted that the flowers were
excellent. Amy noted that the employees were friendly and professional, and they charge the same prices as Jones’ Floral
and have no delivery fee. We’d like to recommend moving to Thomas’ Flower Shop as our regular florist. Motion was
made by Norb Georges and seconded by Andrew Harrold. Motion carried.
Health Insurance Election: Each year the congregation is asked to choose a health insurance election for Pastor Paul.
The election needs to be affirmed on Portico’s website. Pastor Paul will affirm the election online in November. The Gold
Plus option matches what the congregation has offered Pastor Paul each year, and is the recommendation from our Synod.
Pastor Paul and our Finance Committee recommend using the Gold Plus option. There will be a reduction in the insurance
premium as Dana will be receiving her health insurance through her employer. The 2019 Health Insurance election will
only include coverage for Pastor Paul and Lindsay. This will also apply to the remaining time period in 2018 once Dana is
covered by her employer. A motion was made by Andrew Harrold and seconded by Wayne Himler to continue with the
Gold Plus option for Pastor Paul’s health insurance election for he and Lindsay. Motion carried.
2018 Annual Reports: Annual repor ts need completed for each of our committees for the Annual Meeting Part 2 on
January 20, 2019. Reports should be submitted in electronic format to Amy by December 15.
2019 Proposed Budget: The Finance Committee presented and reviewed the proposed 2019 budget to Council. The
Council-approved budget will be included in the November newsletter and presented to the Congregation at our Annual
Meeting, Part 1 on November 18 for approval. Also included in the discussion was a request for a salary increase for our
secretary, Amy Repak. Budget was reviewed, and a motion to accept the proposed budget as amended was made by Wayne
Himler and seconded by Norb Georges. Motion carried.
The next Council meeting will be held on Monday, November 12, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. Devotions for the next meeting will be
presented by Terri Santavy. A motion was made by Andrew Harrold and seconded by Wayne Himler to adjourn the meeting.
Motion carried. Meeting was adjourned at 8:52 p.m.
Respectfully Submitted,
Mary Lou Wolff

From Our Stewardship Committee Each month in our newsletter, we post the “Operating Financial Summary”, which posts both
monthly and year-to-date financial results for our offering receipts and expenses at St. Matthias.
As of the end of September, we are approximately $6,800 short of our year-to-date anticipated offering receipts, which is a $1,300 improvement from the end of August!
Thank you for your generosity! We’d like to continue to remind each of us in our church family at St. Matthias to prayerfully consider what amount they would like to give in their
offering contributions for the rest of 2018. Any and all offerings received are greatly appreciated, and help St. Matthias to reach out to others with God’s love. We’re hoping to
not only close the gap on our current shortfall, but also exceed our yearly goal of $130,000 in offering receipts. Thank you for your generosity, faithfulness, and cheerfulness in giving.
And thanks be to God for always abundantly providing all that we need!
.
On October 11 we met at 7 in the fellowship hall with Lorraine Howell
and Evelyn Malinish as hostesses. The women have turned in 86 US
Veteran Day cards to be delivered to the hospitals and VA centers. This
is a Thrivent Project and notes of appreciation and blessings were
extended to our men and women in our Armed Services.
Women of SWPA ELCA Cluster 4-FALL EVENT was Saturday, October 6, 2018 at
Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Greensburg.
Many thanks to all those who made the Bake Sale a success.
St. Matthias Women of the ELCA will meet Nov. 8th for a
Planning Meeting. Come with ideas on what you might like
to see the Women do in 2019.
Christmas Luncheon is December 8 at noon at Redstone
Highlands. Everyone is welcome.
Happy Thanksgiving

The Season of Caring We are now entering the “Season of Caring” here at St. Matthias. We have supported these programs for several years and are pleased to help them once again. Note: The dates for all three programs are the same: start November 18 and end December 9
th.
These programs are:
Maxwell & Nicely Elementary Schools Every year we request the names of 10 children from each school so we can shop for Christmas gifts from their wish list. They are identified by the schools because their families are having financial difficulties. In the past we have suggested gifts be valued at least $20. If a list is lengthy, it may be a good idea for several members to pull their resources. Tags will be on the Jesse tree in the narthex on November 18
th. The gifts need to be at the
church no later than December 9th
. (Note: we are depending on the school for the lists, so the date the tags appear may be later.) There is a sign-up sheet in the Narthex. Sign your name next to the tag identifier when you take a tag. Add your phone number in case we need to do a follow-up. When you bring the gift to the church, please attach the tag provided. Place the gift in an open gift bag. If the gift is in more than one bag, copy the identify information on to another tag. Be sure the tags are firmly attached. If you have any questions, please contact Jean Kauffman or Bobbie Oestreicher
Bethesda Lutheran Services Also on the Jesse Tree you will find tags for Bethesda Children Services. We have
been supplying $20 Wal-mart gift cards for the children in the group homes. Our goal is 15 gift cards. These cards entitle the group home residents to purchase items they want under supervision of the agency’s staff. Bethesda, located in Meadville, PA, is one of
our synod’s missions. They provide care to troubled youth in a loving, supportive environment. The tags will be put on the Jesse Tree for November `18 and the target collection date is December 9
th.
Direct any questions to Nancy Ferrier
Welcome Home homeless shelter On November 18
th you will be able
to collect an Advent Blessing bag. Over the next few weeks you are to fill the bag with “blessings” which will be given to the folks served by the Welcome Home
homeless shelter in Greensburg. By blessings, they are asking for can goods, paper products, cleaning supplies. Please have the blessings delivered to the church by December 9
th.
If you have any questions, please contact Vickie Georges, Bernice Gruesu, or Arleen Hawk PS: A request: We know the BAGS HAVE TORN in the past due to the weight of cans, etc. They are provided as a helpful reminder for you. Please replace the paper bag with either a more substantial bag or box to make caring them easier. Thank you.
God’s work, Our Hands.

Cleaning Committee In an effort to conserve our financial resources, our congregation has started cleaning the church with the
help of our own members. So far, we have enough members to cover nine weeks. We certainly would appreciate more volunteers. It actually isn’t very hard work. We have a list of what needs done and all the supplies to do the cleaning are in the janitor’s room. Anyone willing to help out, please contact Pastor Paul or the church office! Thank you!

Wings and
Fins Sometimes I catch
a glimpse-
And realize why
we humans are
Your great
creation.
You gave us yearnings, imagination, curiosity.
We saw the birds and longed to fly-
So– we made wings-not perfect like birds wings– but
wings.
We saw the fish-we wanted to invade their world.
And so we went, deep into the sea.
Awe took tanks of air-not perfect-like fins-but we
went into the sea.
You must laugh, Lord,
At our feeble attempts to imitate You.
You must laugh, like a parent laughs in delight
When their children use their imagination and
curiosity…
And we say “Thank You, Lord,”
For making us...in Your image.
