FFrroomm tthhee EEddiittoorr’’ss DDeesskk Greetings!
I must sadly report that this will be my second to last issue as editor of Free Rein. I recently had another hand surgery and I am facing one more hand surgery before the end of this year. I have truly enjoyed producing the newsletter and will definitely miss it.
The election of the 2007 Board of Directors is just around the corner. Heather Neely is heading up the nominating committee. This is your chance to get more involved with the Chapter. If you would like to nominate yourself or another Chapter member for the 2007 Board of Directors, please contact Heather at 714-638-1507 or [email protected].
In this issue you can read about one Chapter member’s success at the national level and how she owes it all to dressage. There is a spotlight on one of the Chapter’s Junior/Young Riders who recently met with success at the CDS Southern Junior/Young Rider Championships. You will find lots of show results as well as information on the Chapter’s photo contest and “The Judge’s View” educational event.
The last chance to earn volunteer hours towards the 2006 Year-End Awards was A Midsummer Day’s Dressage Show on August 6, 2006. A listing of all members that met these volunteer hour requirements is included in this issue. If you have questions regarding your volunteer hours and eligibility for Year-End Awards, please contact either Heather Neely at 714-638-1507 or [email protected] or Julie Haefner at 562-631-1690 or [email protected].
The Chapter’s next show will be held October 22, 2006, at the Ridge Riders Arena in West Covina. Our judge is David Schmutz. We will offer our regular classes plus some fun classes including costume and best animal trick. Entries close October 4. Come join us for some fun!
A big thank you goes to our new CDS show manager/secretary Marie Santos! She actually volunteered to take on this daunting job! No arm twisting involved!
See you at X! Julie A. Haefner Editor, Free Rein

CDS-Pomona Chapter member Kim Thompson bought her first Appaloosa six years ago and was instantly hooked on the breed. She showed her first gelding, Money’s Boston Bug, extensively all over California in English classes. When she won a Reserve World Championship in Novice Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddle at the 2002 Appaloosa World Show, she knew she had maxed out “Scooter” and went looking for another Appaloosa to further her show career. At the Appaloosa World Show in 2003 she fell in love with a big 4 year-old Palomino gelding named Remax. Remax was not “finished” but was already winning World titles. It was love at first sight. Kim already had a great show record with Remax. He had proven to do just about anything that was asked of him. He had competed in pleasure driving, jumping, saddle seat, hunter under saddle and equitation classes. The only problem that presented itself was that as willing as Remax was, he struggled with truly using himself behind. This resulted in him not placing very high on the national level in the flat classes and caused him to get a little fast in his jumping classes. After a disappointing Appaloosa National Show in July of 2005, Kim chose to change gears and decided to try dressage. She began showing in August and was hooked. Her focus has been to really ask Remax to use himself through dressage training including lots of lateral work and transitions; thus allowing Remax to hold his head in an elevated position to truly get his back up. Kim absolutely loves her dressage work and alternates weekends of dressage and Appaloosa showing. Fast forward to Appaloosa Youth World 2006. Kim’s daughter, Hunter, showed Remax for the first time at the Youth Worlds. They took four top five placings, including a fourth in hunter hack and equitation over fences. Kim continued to show Remax the second week during the Appaloosa Open National Show. For the first time ever they placed in a Hunter Under Saddle class. In fact she placed in both Hunter Under Saddle classes with a fourth and an eighth. They also took a top ten in almost every class they went in including saddle seat and jumping. The pair also won a National Reserve Championship in Non-Pro Hunter-in-Hand.
Remax had never performed so well and for a solid two weeks without getting tired and grouchy. Kim owed all of her success to the past year of dressage work. She plans to continue showing dressage and looks forward to competing at the CDS championships this year. She tells all of her Appy friends, who can’t say enough about how Remax has changed, that she owes it all to her dressage work. This comment gets some strange looks, but she is hoping that more of her pleasure riding friends will eventually catch on to dressage.

Have you ever met CDS-Pomona Chapter‘s Junior/Young Rider member Hayley Buckingham? You would remember if you had. Her smile is unforgettable and her enthusiasm is contagious. Hayley has been riding since she could sit up. She began at pony rides and later moved on to ride the family horse Jake. She began taking riding lessons when she was five years old at the Huntington Beach Equestrian Center where the family boarded their horse. She learned to ride hunt seat and jump. She started her show career in shows held at the Equestrian Center as well as local English shows. Currently Hayley is president of The Highland Riders, a local riding club where she lives in La Habra Heights. She was also crowned the 2006 Highland Rider Queen. Hayley has been showing dressage for two years. She trains with Colleen Walker from Newport Beach. In 2005 she showed Angelo, a 24 year old Hanoverian school master. They were year-end Training Level Test 3 Champions at the Orange County Interscholastic Equestrian League, where Hayley rides for her school. She is an 8th grader at Rancho Starbuck Middle School. She and Angelo also competed at the CDS Southern Junior Championships and placed 7th in the Training Level 13 years old and under Championship. Angelo was retired at the end of the 2005 show season and according to Hayley’s mom Karen, Angelo is, “happily mowing the lawn” in their backyard. Comet, a 10 year old Percheron/Quarter Horse cross, is Hayley’s current mount. She is shown as Hayley’s Comet, naturally. Comet was a 10th birthday present from her father. She was originally bought as a family trail horse and had been used as a children’s vaulting horse before the Buckinghams bought her. The mare’s kind nature, willingness to try anything that is asked of her and trust in Hayley has allowed them to become stars in the dressage arena. At their first dressage show at the Oaks, Hayley and Comet earned a 73% in Introductory Level Test A from “O” judge Axel Steiner. This was the first time that Comet had ever been in a real dressage court and was the beginning of a wonderful new dressage career. Hayley and Comet competed at the CDS Southern Junior/Young Rider Championships this past
August. They had a very successful show. The combination competed in the training level championship as well as dressage seat equitation. By show’s end, Hayley and Comet were named Training Level Junior/Young Rider 13 years and under Reserve Champion. Hayley was named Reserve Champion in the Dressage Seat Equitation 18 years and under championship. She was also named Champion in the Dressage Seat Equitation 13 years and under championship and received the perpetual trophy. Karen Buckingham attributes some of her daughter’s success in Dressage Seat Equitation to the CDS-Pomona Chapter’s shows. She said, “We love the DSE class that is not offered at other shows. If it wasn’t for the DSE classes at your shows, Hayley would not have the experience of riding DSE classes to win at the CDS Championship.” Hayley’s trainer, Colleen Walker, said she, “…gives 100% all of the time and looks forward to each and every lesson.” Colleen thinks very highly of her just turned 13 year old student. “I have always dreamed of working with a junior student like this, and now it has come true. I look forward to helping Hayley and Comet towards Young Riders. They are the future of dressage and I am honored to be a part of this team.” CDS-Pomona Chapter is also honored to be a part of this wonderful team. The Chapter looks forward to seeing what else is in store for this dynamic dual in the future.
