MICHELE’S MOMENTS
h my goodness! This pandemic is SO crazy. I can-not tell from day to day if we are open, kinda open, not really open or trying to decide. It can
actually change between the time we open and the time we close. So this is actually me having a MOMENT but I will attempt to clarify where things are at as I write this. The Senior Center is OPEN with very limited activities. We have a receptionist answering the phones 9 am to 4:30 pm. Footcare and drive by opportunities are still happening. After the New Year, we will be here answering the phones but not resuming “normal” classes and activities until the week of January 11th. My plan is to resume some activities (similar to the fall schedule) on January 11 when we re-open after the holidays unless we are directed otherwise. There are exceptions noted on the cal-endar and I would encourage everyone to check out the calendar to see what starts when. Some things still will not change. There will be no card playing or other similar gaming. There will be no Holiday Open House. No tax appointments will be scheduled unless we get additional information. We have not planned anything for a chocolate event in 2021 at this time. There is no Spring Bake Sale planned. April is always my chance to THANK OUR AWESOME VOLUNTEERS. The volunteers here, at the Burnsville Senior Center, keep the wheels on the bus moving. Each of you IS what moves the Burnsville Senior Center. We could not and would not be here without the ef-forts of each of you. You know who you are and I am grateful for your involvement. Thank you. (The waffles for the Volunteer Appreciation will have to wait - this now means I owe you a lot of waffles!!!) Hopefully this spring will bring some needed relief from this past year. I will continue to do the weekly telephone calls to keep you updated and hopefully you enjoy them. In the meantime, enjoy this Chatter courtesy of the Burnsville Senior Center and enjoy a lovely, crisp winter.

ADVISORY COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS From the Burnsville Senior Center Advisory Council
During the fall months, the following items were discussed by the Burnsville Senior Center Advisory Council
Annual Giving Campaign You are SO generous! The Annual Giving Cam-paign thus far is $12,140. Remarkable cam-paign for a remarkable cause. Thank you for your ongoing support.
Be A Santa To A Senior WE DID IT AGAIN! With over 350 isolated seniors served during this past holiday season, you should all be VERY proud. You shared names, you bought gifts and you showed up to help deliver all these tremendous goodies. COVID-19 meant cancelling the “wrap” party but please know that we intend on “wrapping” up a storm next year. Once again, your generosity of this community and its’ seniors is overwhelming. … nice job Burnsville and surrounding communities!
COVID-19 As this is being written, we are still restricted with regard to what can and cannot happen. In our school district, we are guided by a nurse who fi-nalizes all those decision. I want to thank Bernie for her timeliness, her attention to the details and her sensitivity to what we do here at the Burns-ville Senior Center. I have had the great pleas-ure of working with a number a great nurses dur-ing my career and she is at the top of the list. On behalf of the Burnsville Senior Center and our One91 school community I want to say THANK YOU, you are a pleasure to work with.
Taxes – 2021 At this time there will be NO tax appointments for 2021. This is a great time to remember that this is a service, done by volunteers, giving of their time to complete thousands of taxes for sen-iors, low income and people with disabilities. IF, their governing agency does not feel they are safe to provide the service, then there will be no service. Again, at this rather challenging time, it’s unfortunate but understandable.
It’s All About the NUMBERS Thought you might find this interesting. Once COVID showed up we made the decision to reach out to you by way of weekly phone calls, an E-newsletter to start with and then the weekly call also being shared in an email. Those weekly ro-bo calls, have gone out over 65,000 times. And we have emailed that info over 6,700 times. Overall we have reached out almost 100,000 times since the beginning of COVID. I look at it this way, that opportunity has been a blessing as a result of COVID!

Renters and those in subsidized housing may also be eligible to get help with their energy bills. If you make a plan and keep with it, they cannot shut you off from October 15 through April 15. In Dakota Coun-ty for more information call 651-322-3500.

Your Grocery Dollars?
Fare For All is a unique program that has the capacity to serve many of our community members. Fare For All is a newer version of the traditional pro-gram. Fare For All pro-vides fresh, quality food items at up to 40% off retail prices. What type of food is for sale? The Produce Pack ($10) typically includes five varie-ties of fresh vegetables and two fresh fruits. The Meat Only Pack ($11) has a minimum of four assorted meat items. The Regular Pack ($20) com-bines the Produce and the Meat Packs. And the Monthly Special ($25-$30) may include Mega Meat Packs, Grilled Packs and Holiday Packs. This opportunity really helps to stretch your food budget. There are no in-come restrictions and no forms to complete. Fare For All participants may pay with cash, debit or credit cards, or food support (EBT) cards. Just stop in, select your ‘package’, pay and we even help you get it to your car. Mark your calendar for these upcoming dates: January 20, April 21 and July 21 only from 2 – 5 pm, drive-thru fashion on West side of the building off Pleasant Ave. at the Diamondhead Education Center located at 200 W. Burnsville Parkway, Burnsville, MN, 55337 (952-707-4120).

MDC sets consist of about 138 res-taurant cards that can be used monthly for discounts when you are dining out at a variety of different restaurants south of the river. Cards are go-ing for $25 again this year and will remain available until they sell out. MDC card sales are a fundraiser for the Senior Center, and we need your support. The profits are used to support the Center, defray costs and pur-chase needed items. Financial updates will be given in Fun and Friendship meetings and will also be posted in the Senior Center.

Card Recycling Group
2nd and 4th Mon. of the month from 12:30-3 pm REGISTRATION REQUIRED
You won’t believe how wonderful these cards (which you paid a small fortune for) “clean up” and these are just the people to do it. With some funny scissors, a little paper and a lot of creativity, these once anticipated trash are made into an-other’s treasure. Join us for the fun! Drop off cards. Help us recycle them or drop by and pur-chase a few. There are lots of ways to be in-volved.
Woodcarving Group CURRENTLY ON HOLD
Are you interested in woodcarving? The Senior Center is the place to come. You don't need expe-rience to try it out. Experienced woodcarvers are on hand to get you started. Bring a carving knife (they will even teach you how to sharpen your knife if it isn’t sharp). A carving pattern and a piece of basswood will be made available for all beginners. You’re welcome to come and watch and/or speak to the veterans to get yourself start-ed.

Minnesota MDS Support Group Thursday, January 14, 6:30 – 8:30 pm ● DEC Meeting Room
What is MDS? MDS stands for myelodysplastic syndrome. Human blood is composed of three gen-eral types of cells: red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. These cells are manufactured in the bone marrow, which is the soft tissue in the center of your bones. The term myelodysplastic syn-dromes (MDS) refers to a group of similar blood disorders. Each of these disorders is characterized by two common features. First, the bone marrow is unable to provide enough normal blood cells into the circulation. Secondly, in all MDS subtypes, the marrow produces blood cells that are mis-shapen. The Minnesota MDS Patient Support Group will meet quarterly to share treatment options and al-ternatives, tips helpful to endure transfusions and treatments and general knowledge learned by the individuals. Lori Nelson is the group contact and as she stated, “It can be a lonely walk with MDS so it’s so important to know that you are NOT alone.” This is a casual, friendly space.

Please join us for a presentation about hearing health as we age. In addition to hearing health, we will also share hearing resources available – some at no cost because of the help provided by the Americans with Disabilities Act. & Veterans Benefits #09CT - Mar16 Tues, Mar. 16 @ 10 am DEC Meeting Room Presenter Mary Frances Price, Elder Law Attorney
Join Mary Frances Price, an accredited elder law attorney who will address medical assistance, VA aid and attendance benefits. It’s also important to anticipate your future needs, including long term care and the associated costs. Can you ensure money saved during a lifetime of hard work will be enough to cover medical and long-term care expenses? Are there other resources available to help? Can you gift money to your children? Will your home be ‘taken’ when you go into a nursing home? Did you know that Veterans or their spouses can receive up to $1,949 of tax free money to supplement their income to pay for health care costs at home, in assisted living facilities and in nursing homes? If you or your spouse served in the military during a war-time period (WWII, Korea, Vietnam, etc.) and you meet certain financial and health criteria, you could be eligible for this addi-tional income - even if you did not retire from the military!
A Fond Farewell #09CT - Apr5 Mon, Apr. 5 @ 1pm DEC Meeting Room Presenter: Jeanne McGill, CSA, CPC
Statistics show that 70 percent of us are unpre-pared in one or more areas of personal responsi-bility in planning. Don’t be counted as one of those statistics! This free seminar will give options as to what you need for funeral arrangements, the new laws about what you can do for the funeral ar-rangements at home and how to compare apples to apples when comparing costs. Can you buy your casket at Sam’s Club? Can ashes be spread at the Mall of America or any other public place? Be ed-ucated about innovative, creative and proper fu-neral preplanning. Plan ahead: Think outside the box (box meaning casket or urn).
Don’t Be Caught Without One (A Living Will) #09CT - Apr12 Mon, Apr. 12 @ 1 pm DEC Meeting Room Presenter: Jeanne McGill, CSA, CPC
Five Wishes has been called the first “living will with a heart.” Statistics show that 70 percent of us are unprepared in one or more areas of living will preparation. Don’t be counted as one of those sta-tistics! This seminar will give you a chance to learn what a Health Care Directive (Five Wishes) is all about, as well as step-by-step instructions on com-pleting the form. The fifth wish, “What I want my loved ones to know about my funeral,” will also be discussed.
You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know
#09CT - Mar22 Mon, Mar. 22 @ 1 pm DEC Meeting Room Presenter: Jeanne McGill, CSA, CPC
We do the best we can with what we know at the time when making decisions but, unfortunately, there can be huge consequences both financially and emotionally if we decide wrong. Is there a place, person or website that has all the answers as we try, as seniors and adult children, to navigate the obstacles? Or have you asked yourself, “Why did-n’t someone tell me that”? Learn from the real life stories of people who wish they “would have, should have or could have” known more to make a better decision. Topics discussed will include: the aging process, important documents and assuming you know everything.
Should I Stay or Should I Go? Before and After the Funeral #09CT - Mar29 Mon, Mar. 29 @ 1 pm DEC Meeting Room Presenters: Jeanne McGill, CSA, CPC & Mary Frances Price, Elder Law Attorney
After a loved one dies it feels like there are a mil-lion questions that need to be answered. Under-standing what processes take place before and af-ter the funeral will help you make better plans to ease the burden on your loved ones and give you peace of mind. There are approximately 65 deci-sions that need to be made BEFORE the funeral... who is responsible for payment, types of services, who needs to be notified, what does the family need, is the funeral for the person who died or those who are still living? After death, who is re-sponsible for paying the deceased bills and taking care of the deceased possessions? What happens if there is/isn’t a Will? How are assets transferred to heirs? Is probate necessary? How long does pro-bate take? GREAT information that we all need to know for decisions we are going to make! Join us and get some great answers.
