Tour of the Famous Goodman Library
On Thursday, July 19 at 7:30 PM we will gather at the recently renovated Goodman Library, 1219
First Street in downtown Napa. The venerable Goodman Library houses the Napa County Histori-
cal Society and contains the Society's extensive collection of historical documents and artifacts.
A docent-researcher will be our guide as we have a tour of the museum-library. We will be oriented
to the collection and learn how we may utilize the materials and services of the institution.
Please join us for this rare opportunity to see the historic building and have questions answered
about Napa County history.

A Message from our President
The Board of Directors has determined that we should distribute future issues
of the Wine Press by email where possible. The Post Office has changed their
mailing schedule so that it takes a minimum of three weeks to be delivered
after they receive the documents. This makes if very difficult to inform the
members of meetings and other events in a timely manner. If you change your
email address, or have not provided an email address to our Society, we
strongly request that you send it to us at [email protected] ASAP. The Wine Press has also been
used to inform members to renew their annual membership. In the future, the names of the ex-
piring memberships will be printed in the Wine Press and members are encouraged to check this
list to determine their membership status.
Our Annual Fund Raiser, the Wine Collection Drawing, is scheduled for Thursday, August 16,
2007, at the Napa Senior Center. This meeting will begin at 7:00 PM, instead of 7:30 PM. En-
tertainment will be by Acoustic Ambiance, a husband and wife guitar duo playing light melo-
dies. We are requesting that our members bring hors d'oeuvres and desserts to share at the event.
This year our First Prize will be 50 bottles of Napa Valley Wines, with several other prizes. We
have a table at the Napa Wine Train Station until August 16 for volunteers to sell raffle tick-
ets. We hope that many of our members will volunteer to staff the table at the Napa Valley
Wine Train Station as this is our only fund raiser of the year. A sign up sheet is available at the
Library. Members will be receiving 12 raffle tickets in the mail soon and we request that the
stubs, or unsold tickets, be returned by August 13, 2007, to be certain that they are included in
the drawing.
We are also planning to have a booth at the Napa Town and Country Fair from August 9
through August 12, 2007. We have had a booth at the Fair the last two years and the Board feels
that it gives us good exposure and lets many people know that we have a Genealogy Library in
Napa. We will also need volunteers to staff the booth at the Fair. Sandra Hoover is coordinating
this event and you can contact her at the Library if you are interested in volunteering.
Ancestry.com has just released a significant amount of military records. To gain access these
records go to http://www.ancestry.com. Click on Military Records in the Popular Sites, and then
on the Sponsored Links, click on the second ancestry.com/military. Good luck in your re-
searching.
Dick Bruechert,
NVGBS President
PS Our Library is now open on every Saturday, from 10 AM to 2 PM, during the summer
months. This will provide an opportunity for our members to do additional research at the Li-
brary. We appreciate the group of volunteers that have made this possible.

EDUCATIONALLY SPEAKING by Laura McCoy,
Treestones are grave markers that actually look like trees. They were most popular between 1880
and 1905, and were adopted as a symbol by the Woodmen of the World organization for use by
their members. Forms include: Seedling (life everlasting), stump (life interrupted), stump with ivy
(Head of family), and trunk (brevity of life). Other varieties of trees and leaves held their own spe-
cial meanings:
Acanthus - a prickly journey from life to death, triumph of eternal life
Cypress - hope, eternal life (once the tree is cut, its leaves are evergreen)
Fern - humility, frankness and sincerity
Ivy - friendship, immortality, attachment, affection
Laurel - fame or honor
Mistletoe - immortality
Oak Leaves and acorn - maturity, ripe old age
Oak tree - strength or faith and virtue, endurance
Palm branch - victory, rejoicing
Pinecone - immortality
Severed branch - mortality
Weeping willow - lament of loss
The phases of the day capture sentiments as well:
Moon - death and rebirth
Star - divine guidance
Sun rising - renewed life
Sun shining - life everlasting
Sun setting - end of life
Taken from Family Chronicle Magazine - April 2007 issue.
To be continued............ Happy Hunting,...Laura PS

FINDING THE RIGHT FOCUS FOR YOUR RESEARCH:
Direct Lineage: Start with one person and follow that surname back through the generations.
This is often used to quality for a lineage society. Siblings are usually disregarded in this re-
search method which only finds relatives who are 100% direct bloodline.
Family Group Lineage: Similar to Direct Lineage except that siblings are included. This is the
most common type of research.
Collateral Lines: This traces family groups from a common ancestor. Some what backwards
from the Direct Lineage. Following some other lines of descendants can help overcome a brick
wall for your line.
Cluster Genealogy: This investigates a cluster of people not necessarily related. Such as a pro-
ject on the first families of the City of Napa.
Contemporary Descendancy: Traces descendants of an individual or couple to all living rela-
tives. Useful for planning a reunion.

Volunteers needed immediately!!
Hope you can help us.
I need two members to help the MAIL preparation of the Wine Press for JULY
and AUGUST.
Please call 255-9269, or email Margie at
The July newsletter will show our two volunteers what
the process is, so everyone will received the August
newsletter.
(Note from Editor: Margie does this every month by herself and would like to
take a vacation...please help us out! We do so appreciate Margie and her work.)
The Story of Sammy DAR
Have you ever wondered about the cheerful little guy holding the
American Flag and greeting you at the door of the Library? If he is
standing outside, then you know the Library is open before parking
your car. The Volunteers are trained to wheel him out on the porch,
as they open the Library.
Sammy DAR was born/created circa 1994 by Lerneda and Peter
Gaudino for a district meeting hosted by Vineyard Trails Chapter,
National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Soci-
ety (DAR). The chapter spent many hours creating a patriotic theme
through out the conference room and wanted an "Uncle Sam" at the
entry way to greet people. Therefore, our new creation was affec-
tionately named "Sammy DAR."
After the function was over, it was decided that he should be do-
nated to our Genealogy Library. He has thoroughly enjoyed his job as a "greeter" for the past thir-
teen years.

Member Mary Massey has put together a Gannon Family Genealogy in Book
form that is quite impressive. She used a scrapbook format with copies of pho-
tos, documents, census, letters, and more. It is quite impressive. She passes on
this hint: if you are looking for a “lost” living family member, you can fill out a form at your lo-
cal police department and they will do a search. They will not give you any information but instead will
send a form to the address on the person’s drives license that will allow them to contact you. It helped
Mary connect with a nephew and discover more genealogical information. Because I get questions: Ge-

ANNOUNCEMENT May 15, 2007, Footnote.com announced an agreement with FamilySearch, historically known as
the Genealogical Society of Utah, a nonprofit organization sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter-day Saints. FamilySearch is the world’s largest repository of genealogical information.
This new partnership brings together two organizations that will utilize their combined resources to
digitize and make available many large historical collections. The first project will be the three mil-
lion U.S. Revolutionary War Pension files which will be published for the first time online in their
entirety. “The Revolutionary War Pensions will provide an intimate look into the historical events
and individuals that shaped our country’s history,” said Russell Wilding, CEO of Footnote.com.
The Revolutionary War Pension Files feature original records that include muster rolls, payrolls,
strength returns and other miscellaneous personnel pay and supply records of American Army Units
from 1775-1783. www.footnote.com
Note from Janice:
Not all content is free but Ruth Jenkins passed on this tip. If you do a search and find some article
that you want to examine, you may enlarge it (to enlarge, hold down the control key and use the
scroll feature of your mouse). You will be able to see if you are interested enough to purchase it or
just to extract information from the screen. Some documents are available to view at no charge. You
can also do a tour of the site (which is very interesting and informative). If you have a dial up
browser that is slow, you can choose the option to view the tour on YouTube. Remember, our li-
brary has a very fast connection and air conditioning so come on down!
COME JOIN US AT THE NAPA TOWN & COUNTRY FAIR August 8 – 12, 2007
Our society will have a booth at the fair once again this year, same
place as last year in the Chardonnay Hall. All the volunteers who
staffed the booth last year had a great time visiting and meeting
new people...people who were interested in the same hobby we are,
GENEALOGY!
Volunteers receive a free Fair Pass which allows access to the
rest of the Fair before and after their shift. Shifts are flexible. If
you are interested in volunteering for the fair booth,

attended by both members and guests.
There was a general discussion with
many questions asked and answered
