I can not overstate how influential this conference has been for me. I had many inspirational moments, and enjoyed every person I talked to. As I said to many, when I go to conferences, I am often thinking "when can I get to the beach?" Not this one. I wanted to be in that room at 5:30 on Saturday evening. I was proud to be there. I felt fortunate to be there. I felt I had come home, and I arrived in a most unexpected way. Congratulations to you, all who organized, and all who spoke! You all spoke with passion, you spoke to me. Amanda Krieger, Engineer, Lawrence Berkeley Lab
Thanks so much for this spectacular event. Your speaker choices were great! Jaynie Shorb, IEEE member
Thank you for allowing Apple to be a part of such a great event for Women. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting with everyone. Brittany Opatz, Sourcer, Apple Inc.

I have truly enjoyed the event, it was well planned and enthusiastically executed, and beaming with energies. Sorry I could only address the breakout session and not the C-ttee, since my time was so limited to conducting/chairing the TAB meetings. To open my TMC presentation, I have been pleased to show a few highlights of the conference and enthuse everybody, it has worked! Thanks for this wonderful event. Dr. Jacek Zurada, IEEE VP TAB

I would like to Congratulate you both on the success of our conference. It was great effort that had been recognized. I also want to thank you both for giving me this life time opportunity for me to be a part of this conference. If you had not supported me in getting full sponsorship, this wouldn’t have been possible. I would like to thank you once again from the bottom of my heart. Harini Vasu, WIE ILC sponsored student leader
The event was simply fantastic, and other than a few minor tweaks I can’t say I saw anything desperately in need of changing for next year, which is great for the first conference. You and the IEEE staff are impressive in what you were able to deliver to the members and attendees, and I’m glad I was able to lend a hand in such a great success story! Barbara Porter, WIE ILC committee member & CTO at FragranceNet.com

Message from WIE Lahore Section andMaryam Saeed! IEEE WIE Chair 2009FAST Lahore
"The first time I attended a WIE event, I was caught up by this confident yet soft-spoken woman addressing the crowd. I decided, I wanted to do whatever she was doing. By the end of the event, I went up to her and said, "Maria Baji! You inspire me!" She gave me her massively reassuring smile and asked me to come join them. I didn't hesitate. I have been a part of IEEE WIE since. Yesterday, IEEE WIE Pakistan lost one of its pioneers. It is difficult to imagine a world without the warmth that Maria Batool brought with her. She, her IEEE team and her batch mates are the reason we have WIE Pakistan on the globe today. We will miss you, Maria Baji. The world has a hollow place that time cannot fill. May Allah bless you in the hereafter and give patience to every soul that was touched by yours.

The IEEE WIE magazine provides our membership with a tangible benefit and promotes the value of becoming a WIE member, and serves as a valuable resource for outreach to the community 3) Supporting initiatives and programs for attracting and retaining young women in engineering profession through outreach. Continue to develop the IEEE WIE “I Change the World. I am an Engineer.” Campaign that has been very successful. Develop a WIE Conference by year 2014. 4) Organize programs for women IEEE members in collaboration with IEEE
societies: WIE liaisons and coordinators strive to link the programs under WIE to their society events like conferences. This year WIE organized a reception in Computational Intelligence Society Conference in Queensland. Next year WIE is organizing a Women in Electromagnetics workshop in India along with Antenna and Propagation Society.
5) Membership/Affinity Group Activities Women in Engineering supports networking and affinity group activities like, congresses, Forums, Social Get-togethers and other member engagement activities. In the upcoming year, the WIE will continue to host collaborative events with societies of IEEE in an effort to establish IEEE WIE as a recognized international leader for supporting and developing women in engineering. Conference support in terms of participation and hosting of sessions are planned in the near future. Also introducing tracks in conferences under women in engineering to increase the women participation in research will sustain membership interest level. In addition Women in Engineering is establishing a new award for the WIE members whose work benefits humanity and this will increase WIE membership value and also inspire new engineers to work towards a positive goal. WIE Affinity Groups have seen explosive growth over the past 7 years. It is important to understand and nurture this growth. With over 13,000 members and over 400 Affinity Groups (AG’s), WIE has a unique responsibility and opportunity to better understand how to support, retain and build WIE members and AG’s. In addition, IEEE has approximately 40,000 female members. The WIE Membership has approximately 6,956 female members. There is an opportunity to grow our members as well as learn more about the current membership to retain them. There is a unique opportunity here for IEEE’s future. By understanding better what is fueling this growth, we can better utilize those factors and ride this wave of enthusiasm to enhance IEEE’s future.

WIE ACTIVITIES IN 2012:
1) WIE Magazine. The IEEE WIE magazine provides our membership with a tangible benefit and
promotes the value of becoming a WIE member, and serves as a valuable resource for outreach to the community. In 2012 the WIE magazine has submitted
nominations for the APEX Awards for Publication Excellence and are awaiting the decision. The June 2012 issue of the Magazine theme is “Ceremonies and Celebrations”
Recognizing inspirational women.
2) Supporting initiatives and programs for attracting and retaining young women in engineering professions through outreach.
In 2012, WIE Posters will be developed profiling eighteen IEEE women in engineering careers that benefit humanity and/or improve global conditions. This
project has been funding by the IEEE Life Members Fund of the IEEE Foundation.
The development of the WIE Poster aimed to satisfy one of IEEE’s 3 -5 years goals: The public will increasingly value the role of IEEE and technical professionals in enhancing the quality of life and environment. The WIE Poster provides awareness
about engineering, career options, and how engineering is shaping our future.
In an effort to recognize women’s achievements in Engineering, the poster also aims to increase the public perception of women in engineering. The poster
spotlights women engineers doing their “work” and provide statements to improve the public understanding of the contributions of women technical professionals.
The posters may be requested by contacting [email protected] but they may also be downloaded at http://www.ieee.org/documents/wieposter.pdf
3) Membership/Affinity Group Activities

WIE Won Three APEX Awards Magazines & Journals- Print over 32 Pages (June 2010 Issue) Interviews & Personal Profiles (Article- Ready for Takeoff by Heather Wax) One of a Kind Green Publications (Greener on the Other Side- December 2010) APEX Awards are based on excellence in graphic design, editorial content and the ability to achieve overall communications excellence. APEX Awards of Excellence recognize exceptional entries in each of the individual categories. With more than 3,300 entries, competition was exceptionally intense. 100 Grand Awards were presented to honor outstanding work in 11 major categories, with 957 Awards of Excellence recognizing exceptional entries in 130 subcategories. Without the hard work and support of IEEE Staff, and the good collaboration between the IEEE OUs and the continued support of IEEE PUBS, and the work of the WIE Freelancers, WIE would not have been able to receive this recognition. 2) Supporting initiatives and programs for attracting and retaining young women in engineering professions through outreach. In 2011, WIE Posters that profiled women in engineering careers that benefit humanity and/or improve global conditions were developed.
The development of the WIE Poster aimed to satisfy one of IEEE’s 3 -5 years goals: The public will increasingly value the role of IEEE and technical professionals in enhancing the quality of life and environment. The WIE Poster provides awareness about engineering, career options, and how engineering is shaping our future.
In an effort to recognize women’s achievements in Engineering, the poster also aims to increase the public perception of women in engineering. The poster spotlights women engineers doing their “work” and provide statements to improve the public understanding of the contributions of women technical professionals.

Instituto de Empresa Fellowship In 2009, WIE entered into a MoU with the international institution, Instituto de Empresa. The Institution offers Fellowships to Region 8 WIE Members. This scholarship program is for enrollment into advanced studies in management at IE Business School. 3) Public Visibility WIEC continues to support IEEE Public Visibility efforts with highlighting role models for women in engineering in various technical areas and regions. Most recent efforts have been in the areas of consumer electronics/gaming, sustainable energy, healthcare, education and infrastructure.
A plan was initiated by the IEEE Public Visibility Committee to involve a broader global online community within Facebook to engage in discussions around the topics relevant to IEEE Women in Engineering. There has been a renewed focus on engineering education reform this year that is motivating academicians and those people responsible for hiring engineers. We want to make sure that young professionals and students are not left out and we plan to continue to reach out to them via the growing Facebook community interested in the profession and the challenges that women face.
We would like to invite you to the main IEEE WIE Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ieeewomeninengineering
4) Membership/Affinity Group Activities
Women in Engineering supports networking and affinity group activities like, congresses, Forums, Social events, and other member engagement activities. In 2012, the WIE will continue to host collaborative events with societies of IEEE in an effort to establish IEEE WIE as a recognized international leader for supporting and developing women in engineering. Conference support in terms of participation and hosting of sessions have gone through the testing phase by introducing tracks under women in engineering in some of the regional conferences to increase women participation in research so as to sustain membership interest level.

GOALS FOR 2012 The top priorities of the projects proposed for 2012 include: 1) Reach out to women members in IEEE
Though the Women in Engineering was formed to bring the women of IEEE together, over the years, most of the activities has been directed to benefit the immediate members of the affinity groups and aspiring engineers. This year the WIE committee is planning to organize certain activities to bring the women members and the Women in Engineering members of IEEE together so as to serve them better.
2) Prepare the strategic plan for Women in Engineering and update the operations manual
Now that Women in Engineering has found its rightful home, it follows that there should be a future plan for the growth and to this effect the strategic planning has to be finalized. With this the operations manual also has to be updated with the reorganization and change in objectives and operations, if any.
3) Continue to produce a professional quality WIE Magazine. The IEEE WIE magazine provides our membership with a tangible benefit and promotes the value of becoming a WIE member, and serves as a valuable resource for outreach to the community. In 2011 the WIE magazine won three APEX Awards for publication excellence and in 2012 the goal of WIEC is to retain and improve the excellence. The 2011 Editorial Calendar of the WIE Magazine was set by the WIEC at the in-person meeting. Representatives and Liaisons from Societies had the opportunity to put forth proposals to have their society highlighted in a dedicated themed issue. The June 2011 issue of the Magazine will be “Emergency Recovery Disaster Response”. The December 2011 issue was on Entertainment Engineering. 4) Supporting initiatives and programs for attracting and retaining young women in engineering profession through outreach. In 2010, the WIEC redefined the STAR program as a program that represents all pre-university outreach activities, and not limit it to the Student-Teacher and Research Engineer/Scientist Program. Due to the increase in coordinated efforts and collaborations, WIE has managed to reach thousands of students per year. In 2011, the outreach activities were not confined to the pre-university training but the goals included sustaining the existing members after graduation too. GOLD WIE members were benefited by programs like “Young Leaders Meet” - a series of leadership seminars and workshops to sustain their careers. In 2012 the same will continue including the women who want to return to profession after a break. 5) Membership/Affinity Group Activities Women in Engineering supports networking and affinity group activities like, congresses, Forums, Social Get-togethers and other member engagement

activities.
