    SharedspaceatBullandHargreavesStreets

    CasestudysharedspaceinBendigoBendigocitycentrehasbeenredevelopedwithafocusonpublicrealmimprovementstoimprovepedestrianspaces.ThisincludestheinnovativeWalkBendigosharedspacewhichaimstoincreasethelevelsofalertnessandresponsivenessofallstreetuserstotheirsurroundingsdrivers,pedestriansandcyclists.

    Byredesigningtraditionalstreetspaceswithpedestrianstylepaving,furnitureandfittings,andinsodoingincreasingthelevelofambiguityatintersectionsandstreets,ithasbeenshownthatthepsychologyofstreetuserscanbemodifiedtoprovideasaferandmoreamenablecity.Theremovalofthingssuchastrafficlightsandroadmarkingsallservetoincreasetheuncertaintyofspace.Byencouragingunpredictabilityandcreatinguncertaintyinthemindsofallroadusers,vigilanceandcareareimproved,resultinginsaferstreetsandthepotentialforahigherqualitypedestrianandcyclistenvironment.

    Thenewintersectionsusingthesharedspacemodelallowlevelanddirectpedestriancrossingroutes.Thewholeintersectionisanintermingledtrafficspacewithpedestriansabletotraversebetween,behindandinfrontofslowmovingvehicleandcycletraffic.Theinstallationoftexturedrumblestripsandapproachrampswillprovidedriverswiththephysicalcuestoslowdown.Thereducedspeedswillinturncreatesaferpedestrianspacesandencouragemorepedestrianactivity.

    AnalysisofspeedinHargreavesStreetshowthatthechangeshavereducedaveragespeedsdramatically,from40km/hto2629km/h.

    ThesharedspacecomplementsHargreavesMall,whichisprimarilyapedestrianspace,butstillhasrestrictedvehicleaccess.
