INTRODUCTION TO VIBRATION ISOLATION
IMPORTANCE OF STATIC DEFLECTION
ISOLATION EFFICIENCY CHART
To isolate unwanted machine vibration, it was once sufficient to mount the offending equipment on a piece of cork or felt. But today, with greater knowledge and higher expected standards,this traditional solution is usually inadequate, both in large building structures and in general industrial enviroment.
In building construction, improved design allows lighter but inherently more flexible structures to be used. At the same time, increasingly powerful air-conditioning and auxiliaryequipment is needed and may often be installed in upper level
Similarly in general industry, the size of vibration producingequipment is increasing whilst the community and workforcedemand improved living and working conditions, free from severe vibration or structure born noise.
Both situations require engineered vibration control systems which give predictable results appropriate to the surrounding environment.
plantrooms. Equipment vibration therefore can be a major problem in such structures.
Isolation of vibration is accomplished by supporting the equipment on resilient mounting elements such as springs or rubber, which compress under the equipment weight. The degree of isolation achieved is directly related to the amount
of compression (i.e. static deflection) of the mounting.The greater the static deflection which can be achieved (without compressing too solid) , the better will be the resulting vibration isolation.
This chart illustrates the theoretical relationship betweenisolation efficiency, disturbing frequency and static deflection (or dynamic natural frequency) for a simple isolation system ona rigid foundation. It is also grouped into zones suggestingisolation efficiency ranges appropriate to different applications.
To use the chart, determine the lowest rotation speed of the equipment and consider this to be the disturbing frequency.Move vertically to intersect the diagonal line corresponding tothe percentage isolation required; then move horizontally leftand read the dynamic natural frequency or static deflection required of the mounting.
It is sufficient to use static deflection to select the correctisolator for spring mounted systems; but for rubber and pad mounts, selection should be made on the basis of dynamicnatural frequency.

EFFECTIVENESS OF ISOLATION
STATIC DEFLECTION GUIDE
USING VIBRATION MOUNTINGS
The effectiveness of any resilient isolation system is usuallyexpressed in terms of its isolation efficiency, defined as thepercentage of the total vibratory force which is absorbed by theisolators.
Using the graph, the isolation efficiency of a simplespring system may be estimated from given values of staticdeflection and disturbing frequency. For rubber isolators, amore realistic estimate is obtained by using values of dynamic natural frequency instead of static deflection.
However, in assesing the level of isolation efficiency whichmight be acceptable in any situation, consideration must also be given to the following:
Equipment type and operating weight
Magnitude and nature of the vibratory forces
Restriction on equipment motion (see Inertia Blocks ) Location of equipment within the structure
For example, an isolation efficiency of 80% is probably satisfactory for a 5 kW machine located in the basement, buttotally inadequate for a 100 kW machine installed on a flexible upper level floor; particularly when adjacent to valuable office or residential accomodation. In this case an isolationefficiency close to 98% would be required.
The Static Deflection Guide shown below summarises theimportant theoretical relationship between disturbing frequency, static deflection and installed environment.
The table provides a guide to the isolator type and necessarystatic deflection for given values of operating speed and isolation efficiency. It also suggests appropriate levels of isolation efficiency for various operating locations.To use the table, read the minimum static deflection directlyagainst machine disturbing frequency (operating speed) andrequired isolation efficiency.Two static deflection figures appear, one for basement or ongradeinstallations; the other for upper level installations wheresome allowance is made for flexibility of the supporting structure.Select the appropriate figure.For rubber and pad mounts, static deflections have been corrected for average rubber hardness to approximate selectionsbased on dynamic natural frequency (see Isolation EfficiencyChart on previous page)
Some simple guidelines for successful vibration control:
(1) Mounting support points and load ratings should be selected so that the static deflections of all mountings are as uniform as possible.
(2) Unrestricted movement of resiliently mounted equipment is essential for effective isolation.
* Ensure that adequate clearance is maintained around the installed equipment, particularly underneath it, to permit free movement - especially where high deflection mountings are used.
* All connections to resiliently supported equipment should themselves be flexible. As well as restricting equipment motion, any fixed connection can offer a direct path for transmission of vibration to the surrounding structure, bypassing the isolation system.
(3) Top heavy machinery, especially when mounted on a narrow base, can become unstable if mountings are located too close to each other beneath the equipment. Such instability can be avoided by use of outrigger brackets which space the mountings further apart and raise the mounting location points closer to the vertical centre of gravity of the equipment.
(4) A rigid base is essential for resiliently supported equipment to avoid misalignment of drive components. Any flexibility in the machine base should be eliminated by the addition of steel stiffeners or use of a concrete inertia base.
(5) Piping, ductwork and ancillary equipment connections should not impose dead loads on the resiliently mounted equipment . Their weight should be separately supported.

Nendle inertia base systems offer a flexible approach to isolating rotary plant.Isolation efficiencies of up to 98.5% can be achieved.
