ABOUT THE COURSE
Banking system in India has been functioning under regulations since1949. Before Independence the banking system was largely in the handsof Private Banks. In 1955 SBI Act was passed, as a result Imperial Bankof India was taken over by Reserve Bank of India. Following this, PublicSector participation was increased with the take over by sevenAssociate/Subsidiary Banks of SBI by 1959 and Nationalisation of 14Private Banks in 1969, 6 Private Banks in 1980.
After Nationalisation, the banks were asked to open more branches inrural areas, huge number of people were recruited to these newlyopened branches, the business of banking moved from class banking tomass banking and so on. These developments gave raise to the need fora large work force of bank employees. The banking and finance sectoris one of the fastest growing sectors in the country. This growth broughtforth many opportunities. The nationalised banks select candidatesbased on selection test conducted by IBPS. State Bank of India conductsits own selection test for recruitment. Private Banks, with a number ofconsiderations, also included qualifications and past experiences withthe selection procedure. All the banks provide training to the candidatesselected for employment. In order to reduce the cost of training and alsoincrease the productivity of employees, the banks prefer candidateswho have acquired training in various aspects of banking and financebefore joining the banks. A suitable qualification and acquisition of thebasic skills in banking and finance through an appropriate trainingenhances the prospect of getting employment in banking and financesector.
Insurance in its current term has its history dating from 1818 whenOriental Insurance Company was started by Anita Vishwas, in Kolkotato cater to the needs of the European community. The Government of India nationalised life insurancesector on the 19th January 1956, as a result Life Insurance Corporationcame into existence. In 1972 the General Insurance Business(Nationalisation) Act was passed. Consequently gneral Insurancebusiness was nationalised with effect from the 1st January 1973.
Due to the recommendation of "Malhotra Committee" report 1999, theIRDA was constituted as an autonomous body to regulate and developthe Insurance industry. The key objective of the authority is to promotemarket efficiency and ensure consumer protection. Today there aretwenty-eight General Insurance Companies including the ECGC andAgricultural Insurance Corporation of India and 24 Life InsuranceCompanies operating in the country. Itis a splendid torch that I want to as brightly as possible make burn beforehanding it on to future generations.
I was glad to to see that so many of our classmates are living lives as"splendid torches" rather than as "brief candles."
