Verb Conjugation Review
And Conjugating Stem Changing Verbs
First of all, this IS all review, but it wouldn’t hurt to take some notes. Especially if you still feel a little confused with stem changers or conjugation in general.
What is the purpose of conjugation?*Conjugation means to modify or change the verb to make it
express that the action (the verb) is being done by a subject. * Like TO READ is a verb…I would conjugate to read for I-to
express that I am the one doing that action.I READ
* We do the VERY same thing in Spanish.LEER is the verb, to make it say I am doing the Reading, I MUST
conjugate LEER to make it say I read or YO LEO.
Sound Familiar?* It should, on the next slide there is and ENGLISH and SPANISH
conjugation chart to help you compare.
I readwe read
You read
He readsthey read
She readsyou all read
You (form.)read
Yo leonosotros leemos
nosotras leemos
Tú lees
Él leeEllos leen
Ella leeEllas leen
Usted leeUstedes leen
Notice that the letter S doesn’t ALWAYS make something plural. Like in READS. The S does NOT make that plural. Neither does the S on lees.
When conjugating regular verbs we follow the same pattern whether the verb is an AR, ER or IR verb.
Step 1: Start with the infinitive (unconjugated) from of the verb.Like: Escribir
Step 2: Cut off the ending…either the AR ER or IREscrib
Step 3: add the approriate ending for whoever the subject is doing the action:
ER—o, es, e, emos, enIR----o, es, e, imos, enAR---o, as, a, amos, an
***This pattern works for all normal (regular) verbs.
But, when it comes to STEM CHANGING VERBS, there is a slight difference in those steps.
Examples of Stem Changers are: PEDIR-to order or ask for, SERVIR-to serve, REPETIR-to repeat, QUERER-to want/to love
Pedir, Servir, and Repetirall these are eI verbs, meaning that the e in their stem changes to an I when conjugating in some forms….
Remember---
SIRVOSERVIMOS
SIRVES
SIRVE SIRVEN
ALL THE FORMS INSIDE THE BOOT…DO HAVE THE STEM CHANGE
REMEMBER THIS DOESN’T CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT THE ENDINGS.
SERVIR does do the stem change, BUT its endings are the normal IR endings: o, es, e, imos, en
The only thing irregular that happens is the eI stem change
REMEMBER THE NOSOTROS/AS FORM IS NOT AFFECTED BY THE STEM CHANGE, ITS BEEN KICKED OUT OF THE BOOT-ITS NOT PART OF THE STEM CHANGER CLUB!!

IN REPETIR ONLY THE 2ND E HAS THE STEM CHANGE EI
THE VERB QUERER DOES THE SAME THING…BUT ITS AN EIE STEM CHANGER
QUIERO

QUIERES
QUIEREN
QUEREMOS
ANOTHER COMMON ERROR IS THAT
MANY STUDENTS ARE USING THE WRONG SET OF
ENDINGS…
REMEMBER THAT ONLY AR VERBS ARE GOING TO USE THE AR ENDINGS: O, AS, A, AMOS, AN
AND ONLY ER VERBS ARE GOING TO USE THE ER ENDINGS: O, ES, E, EMOS, EN
ONLY IR VERBS ARE GOING TO USE THE IR ENDINGS: O, ES, E, IMOS, EN
