11 percent of the group turnover. Chroma is a 100 % mercerized cotton thread meant for
garments which are to be Overdyed. Chroma provides with better strength as compared to
normal cotton threads and also gives better dye affinity.
In this project I have covered the various aspects regarding RFD thread Chroma which is
manufactured by vardhman. I have conducted my study in the NCR region regarding the
competition and the market share of the vardhman. I have visited various units to gather the
information regarding the awareness level among the existing export houses about the RFD
thread of Vardhman. During the study, various aspects are considered to make the
information useful for the future reference.

1.3 HISTORY

The industrial city of Ludhiana, located in the fertile Malwa region of Central Punjab is
otherwise known as the "Manchester of India". Within the precincts of this city is located the
Corporate headquarters of the Vardhman Group, a household name in Northern India. The
Vardhman Group, born in 1965, under the entrepreneurship of Late Lala Rattan Chand Oswal
has today blossomed into one of the largest Textile Business houses in India.
At its inception, Vardhman had an installed capacity of 14,000 spindles, today; its capacity
has increased multifold to over 8 lacs spindles. In 1982 the Group entered the sewing thread
market in the country which was a forward integration of the business. Today Vardhman
Threads is the second largest producer of sewing thread in India. In 1990, it undertook yet
another diversification - this time into the weaving business. The grey fabric weaving unit at
Baddi (HP), commissioned in 1990 with a capacity of 20,000 meters per day, has already
made its mark as a quality producer of Grey poplin, sheeting, shirting in the domestic as well
as foreign market. This was followed by entry into fabric processing by setting up Auro
Textiles at Baddi and Vardhman Fabric at Budhni, Madhya Pradesh. Today the group has
900 shuttleless looms and has processing capacity of 90mn meters fabrics/annum.
In the year 1999 the Group has added yet another feather to its cap with the setting up of
Vardhman Acrylics Ltd., Bharuch (Gujarat) which is a joint venture in Acrylic Fibre
production undertaken with Marubeni and Exlan of Japan. The company also has a strong
presence in the markets of Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, UK and EU in addition to the domestic
market. Adherence to systems and a true dedication to quality has resulted in obtaining the
coveted ISO 9002/ ISO 14002 quality award which is the first in Textile industry in India and

1.8 SOME OF OUR CSR ACTIVITIES -
Sri Aurobindo Socio-Economic and Management Research Institute is engaged in the promotion of
education, research and publications highlighting social and economic issues facing the society. The
Institute runs a Human Resource Development Centre for providing career counseling and guidance
to college students in Punjab. The teams of experts also visit the colleges in the state to prepare
college students for gainful employment in the industry.
Sprung from a keen desire to set up an educational institution in Ludhiana and inspired by the
writings of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, the Trust has set up a college - Sri Aurobindo College of
Commerce and Management (affiliated to the Punjab University) with the mission to create an
institution with distinction dedicated to the ideals of creating disciplined career oriented young
people ready for going for administrative and management roles in enterprises or to set up their own
business as entrepreneurs.
A Vardhman initiative to improve the yield of cotton in Punjab in 2001 when the State had
suffered a shock of crop devastation and area under cotton cultivation was dwindling, led to
the experiment to adopt villages and see whether concerted efforts in bringing knowledge to
farmers could improve the yield of cotton. The experiment was successful as it improved the
yield of cotton to 873 kg/hectare in 2005 in adopted villages where the average yield of
cotton in the State of Punjab was 587 kg/hectare (world average - 700 kg/hectare). It found
mention in the President's broadcast on Technology Day (11/05/04) as a 'technological event
which has the potential to penetrate into our everyday lives'. The Village Adoption
Programme also found mention in the President's address to the nation on the eve of India's
56th Republic day. The President of India was gracious to bless one of the participating
Villages -'Gehri Buttar' (District - Bathinda) by his presence on December 10th 2005.

Hand Embroidery
People have always found deep personal pleasure and sense of satisfaction in creating articles of
daily use and artistic works from basic equipment and materials. One of the crafts practiced since
times immemorial is needlecraft and embroidery - the urge to create with colourful threads.
Embroidery was used in Ancient Egypt to decorate the hems of royal robes, in tapestries in the
17
Middle Ages, and in ladies' samplers during the Colonial and Victorian eras. It continues as an art
form today.
Hand embroidery is used to decorate wall hangings, pillowcases, quilts and table runners. Hand
embroidery differs from counted cross stitch in that it uses many different types of stitches to achieve
texture and interest, whereas counted cross stitch uses a single stitch and relies on color and shading
for texture. Five stitches form the basis for hand embroidery. The stitches are outline, satin, lazy
daisy, cross and French knot.
Hand embroidery is a beautiful art that almost anyone can learn. It is an art that should be preserved
and well worth learning. The hand embroidery market in India is segmented into three segments.

Embroidery, the art of forming attractive designs with hand or machine needlework, has been
around virtually as long as clothing itself.
Schiffi embroidery is a single needle and single/multi head machine embroidery. Both mercerized
cotton as well as staple polyester fibers is used to manufacture this thread. It gives excellent
resistance to heat and organic solvent and good resistance to alkalis but sensitive to acdis.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
21
3. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
3.1 SAMPLE
The sample has been taken of 30 companies in the region of NCR.
3.2 DATA COLLECTION
Primary data as well as Secondary data has been collected. Primary data has been collected by
personally visiting the companies and by filling the questionnaires. Secondary data has been taken
from different company web sites and newspapers and journals.
3.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
1. To check the other competitors of RFD thread Chroma in NCR region
2. To find the market share of RFD thread Chroma in NCR region
3. To check the awareness level of the RFD threads Chroma among the export houses.
22
DATA ANALYSIS
23
AND
INTERPRETATION
4. DATA ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION
4.1
MAJOR BUYERS
24
These are the proverbial brands in attire world for whom the garment export houses in NCR
is making clothes. India is a major hub of garment industry as most of the reputed brands are
coming to the Indian market, as Indian market is a growing market and have a good potential
to be a major leader in the garment industry in the coming years.
4.2 NO. OF GARMENTS PRODUCED PER MONTH
25
As per my survey conducted most of the export houses are producing the garments in the
range between 100000 to 150000 per month. As it indicates most of the firms are more or less
of same scale and there is a huge competition in the existing market of garment export
industry. As lots of benefits are provided by the government to these export houses, hence
export market is competitive.
4.3 KINDS OF GARMENTS PRODUCED
26
As per the survey conducted it is concluded that ladies garments are in more demand like
ladies tops, skirts, cardigans and other hosiery related garments. It may be because women
are considered to be shopping buff that’s why they are main or easy target for them. Market
of ladies garment is strong as compare to men moreover its very expensive. No doubt the
market of women is strong but men and kids wear also play a vital role in generating the
revenue.
4.4 GARMENTS OVERDYED PER MONTH
27
As per the survey conducted it is concluded that most of the companies which itself or giving
outside their clothes for overdyeing is in the range between 0 to 10%. It also shows that most
of the export houses overdyed their clothes in minimal percentage. It is because overdyed
garments are using in a very few areas for example in country like India Rajasthan is the
major area where overdyed clothes are used the most.
4.5 AWARENESS ABOUT THE OTHER THREADS USED FOR OVERDYEING
28
As per the survey conducted it is concluded that most of the garment export houses in NCR
region are just well versed with the RFD thread which they are using by themselves whereas
only few of the companies are just concerned about the other RFD thread available in the
market but they didn’t used it so far.
4.6 BUYERS FOR OVERDYED GARMENTS

5. FINDINGS AND INTERPRETATION
37
1. All the companies are producing more than or equal to 100000 garments as per the survey
conducted.
2. Ladies garments are more in demand in comparison to the men and kids wear.
3. Most of the companies overdyed the clothes in the range between 0 to 10%.As it shows
poor awareness program of the companies or it is because export units are not getting the
competitive prices..
4. Out of the 30 companies during my survey only 2 companies are aware about the Chroma
RFD thread, as it shows there is a lot of scope to explore the market and it will help the
vardhman to beat Coats in the future.
5. Coats India Limited captured the most of the market, as most of the export houses those
are using the overdyed thread belongs to Coats, so they are the market leader at present.
6. Sales and promotion techniques are poor in the case of Chroma RFD thread. Assured
delivery is utmost important from the view point of export houses so better quality and
assured delivery will help to increase the market share.
It is required by Vardhman to organize the exporters meeting on regular basis so it will help
the organization to make the exporters aware about their products. It is also necessary to
provide discounts to those exporters for achieving a certain level of target.
It is required to approach those exporters which are not covered by Coats so they will start
using the overdyed thread of Chroma and it will increase the market share of the Vardhaman.
CONCLUSION
38
As per the survey conducted it is concluded that out of the 30 companies in ncr region most
of the companies are not well versed with the “chroma” rfd thread which is specially used for
overdyeing the clothes. most of the companies are going for the “dimex” rfd thread which is a
product of coats india limited. the following are the main reasons behind the poor scale of
chroma is the bad promotion, expensive than the other threads, less demand by the customers
for the overdyed clothes. Out of the 30 companies only 2 companies are using chroma rfd
thread while rest of the companies are using other threads.
