The Value of ‘Value Education’If there was something that you wished would never end, what would it be? I am
sure the answer would vary from person to person: a mystical experience, an eternal
embrace, a soothing music, a fascinating story, a thrilling movie, a captivating smile…
but for most students, the answer is simple, “How I wished my holidays would never
end!”
BACK
TO
SCHOOL
is
a
slogan
all
over
now.
An article in the DNA Newspaper, ‘Vacation with a Cause’ , really caught my atten‐
tion a few days ago. Children were utilizing their holidays to volunteer at local NGOs:
from contributing toys to Toybank to teaching English to five‐year olds or even
caring for stray animals! They valued it. Something they wished would never end.
Our March 2012 ‘Values for the Yatra’ E‐letter, challenged young students on the ‘Value of Contribution’ and to utilize
their holidays in Making a Difference… I know of young students who volunteered to work at a leprosy home, some
braved it out at the Kune Missions, others travelled out to drought stricken Ahmednagar to join hands in the ‘GIVE
WATER, GIVE LIFE’ campaign. CONGRATULATIONS...a small step in creating a better world.
On the
other
hand,
one
must
admit,
that
during
these
same
holidays
there
were
glaring
examples of shame and selfishness. The entire IPL 6 caught in match‐fixing and betting. “The
declining values in the ‘Gentleman’s game’ is a reflection of our declining values in society
today”, commented an angry cricket fan. “I’m shocked and disappointed”, sighed Sachin
Tendukar, India’s greatest cricket icon.
Pope Francis, speaking to an audience of over 200,000 pilgrims in Rome, on May 18, 2013,
sadly commented: “Today the world faces not just an economic crisis but a crisis in values!” Our very own President,
Mr. Pranab Mukerjee, while speaking at the fourth Annual Convocation Ceremony of Dev Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya at
Haridwar, in December 2012 said, “Education adds value to a person and Value‐based Education equips us to contrib‐
ute in a meaningful way to society.”
AVEC has taken ‘EMBRACE VALUES: ENRICH LIVES’ as its theme for the new
scholastic year 2013‐14. It is our way of drawing attention, within the school
community and beyond, to building a new humanity as we walk together the
Valued Path. This ‘Crisis in Values’ can only be addressed if every educator,
parent, politician, religious head and social activist challenges the young to
‘Embrace Values and Enrich Lives’ in their educative journey.
AVEC wishes to congratulate Fr. George Athaide, the new Secretary ABE and say a
sincere word of thanks to Fr. Gregory Lobo who supported AVEC all through the
last six years.
God bless you all as you begin this new journey 2013‐14 to live a Value based life.

God’s greatest gift to you is YOU..
You are the fruit of ‘body ‐ mind ‐ heart ‐ soul’.
Not to care for it is to mistreat this wonderful gift.
‘Health is Wealth’… treat your self gently and lovingly.
Care for Health‐Kids...they are essential
for a sustainable future.
Nurture your Spiritual Health also !!!

becomes ‘junk’. Learn the value of eating healthy foods.
Don’t punish your body with unhealthy foods… make
healthy foods count! Befriend Fruits and Vegetables ...
It is

what

it
is

important how you eat. Think smaller portions!!!

Rhythmic
Sleeping is never an act of laziness! Sleep SMART ..
Your body is not a machine...it needs to slow down and
relax. You need a minimum of 8 hours of good sleep.
Cultivate the value of Power Naps ...Power Naps boosts
your memory, cognitive skills, creativity, and energy levels.
Sleep well and rise refreshed... avoid late night SMSs, chats

Healthy bodies need healthy environs. Be Clean, be safe.
Don’t take ‘cleanliness for granted’. We are surrounded by
millions of microbes and germs that cause diseases. Take care.
Eating outdoor foods is risky. Be alert during
the monsoon season especially.
Food poisoning is a nasty health issue.
And be careful of the water you drink.
Caught up in a fast paced world, we run the risk of
being victims of stress, heart failures, high blood
pressures… Have the courage to SLOW DOWN.
Value the Gift of SLOWING DOWN… eat slowly, talk
slowly, breath slowly. We all seem to be in an
endless hurry. Slow and steady wins the race.
Slowing Down gives us an opportunity to reflect
more.
