N310/N300Ethernet-Based Synchronization
White Rabbit
Ethernet Synchronization Requirements Meet synchronization and timing requirements for
cellular and other time sensitive applications Alternative to 10 MHz / PPS and GPS based
approaches Suitable for indoor environments and areas with
limited GPS coverage Multiple km cable lengths Suitable for a broad range of user applications
Ethernet Synchronization - What is White Rabbit?
● Extension of IEEE1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) standard
● Physical layer clock synchronization (similar to SyncE)
● Enhancement of IEEE1588-2008 timestamps using phase detection
● Automatic evaluation and compensation of link asymmetry
● Currently undergoing standardization by IEEE P1588 Working Group as a High Accuracy PTP Profile (WRPTP)
● Expected IEEE standard publication in 2018 or 2019
PTP messages used by White Rabbit
Ethernet Synchronization - Why White Rabbit?
● Open specification, open hardware, open software● Developed through global academic and industry collaboration● Partners include CERN, GSI Helmhotz Centre for Heavy Ion Research, and
universities around the world● Broad applicability of Ethernet (cellular, scientific, academic, etc.)● Scalable to thousands of nodes
N300/N310 – White Rabbit Hardware Requirements
● WR supported SFP transceivers, network equipment, and single mode fiber required
● Seven Solutions (https://www.sevensols.com) is preferred WR network provider
● WR Switch - https://www.ohwr.org/projects/white-rabbit/wiki/switch
● WR SFP - https://www.ohwr.org/projects/white-rabbit/wiki/SFP
● Uses dedicated SFP on USRP – Independent SFP ports required for timing and I/Q data
