Using Dragon with my EHR/EMR

Normally you can dictate and use Dragon Medical voice commands in any text windowof any application. However, you may occasionally find an application, or a specificwindow in an application, where you cannot dictate or where some voice commandswon't work properly or consistently (e.g. first word you dictate in a field may not becapitalized, slowness, jumping cursor etc.)

You may especially find these symptoms appear when using any type of remotedesktop, Citrix, or terminal services programs to connect into your EHR.

In these situations, you can use a special window, entitled Dictation Box. Dictation Boxallows you to dictate and edit text in these unknown text fields without the difficulties youmight otherwise experience.

You typically use the Dictation Box when you have difficulty dictating or correcting textin an unknown text field that doesn't support Full Text Control. The Dictation Box givesyou access to the Full Text Control functionality when it isn't supported directly. Todetermine if the application, window, or text field you're working in has Full Text Controllook for the Full Text Control indicator on the DragonBar. When it is green, it's available.

Full Text Control

If you start dictating into a non-standard window, the indicator turns off and theDragonBar displays the message “Dictating into a non-standard window." If dictatinginto a "nonstandard window", you may (not always) experience some of the symptomsdescribed in the first paragraph.

Basic Text Control

NOTE: it is normal for the checkmark to be gray when the cursor is not blinking in a textfield. E.g. viewing your Windows desktop

FAQ

I can dictate directly into my EHR even though full text control is not available. However, the first word I dictate is not capitalized.

To capitalize the first word (or the first letter in a word) in a field, simply preface with thefirst word you dictate with the word "Cap [First Word ]" without any pausing betweenthe word "Cap" and the word you want capitalized. (E.g."Cap the patient" will displaytext as "The patient"). This "Cap" command may not be needed for subsequent wordsyou say after a period

I have a web-based EHR/EMR and am unable to dictate directly into my EHR usingInternet Explorer. Could another browser help?

Yes, many users of web-based EMR who have had problems dictating directly into theirEHR have had success using other browsers. We find that Google Chrome often works.Especially with Practice Fusion. You can also try Mozilla Firefox as well. You may alsowish to access our other document entitled " Suggested Options Settings for use withEHR"

Why is it that sometimes I don't need dictation box even though full text control is notavailable and other times I do need dictation box?

This is part of the unpredictability of dictating into a text field that does not have full textcontrol. There is nothing we can to fix this unpredictability, other than using dictationbox. Sometimes you may notice certain fields within your EHR do show full text controland others don't. This occurs many times because EHR companies contract certainportions of the EHR's to different development teams that may not be using the sametext box standards.

Once in a while the text that I have dictated in dictation box does not transfer to myEHR. How do I retrieve the text that I dictated so all is not lost?

By default, the dictation box copies the text from the dictation box into Windowsclipboard when you transfer the text. To retrieve the text, place your cursor in the fieldthat you want the text to appear and simply say "paste that" or you can also try pressingCtrl+v on your keyboard. If this happens frequently, you may wish to change thebehavior of dictation box when it transfers the text. Click "Tools" ---> "Options" ---> clickon "dictation box" tab and under "paste options" choose "Simulate Keystrokes"

What if I want to dictate and have Dragon capture my text while I'm browsing throughmy EHR for lab results, MRIs, x-rays etc.?

There is a feature in dictation box entitled "Hidden mode". Hidden mode allows you tobrowse through your EHR or other Windows while you are dictating and have the textcollect in the background without having to have your cursor actively blinking in dictationbox (in view) for it to capture the text. To learn more about this feature Click "Tools" --->"Options" ---> click on "dictation box" tab and click the "Help" button at the bottom formore information on this feature and many others.
