December 2017

President Greg Hipple

Christmas, a most magical time of the year is upon us. It is a season of hope, peace, and realizing the importance of family, friends, and togetherness. As I write this message, I do so with mixed

emotions. This is my last message as president of the Belted Galloway Society, Inc. I am so proud of all that Council has accomplished over the past few years. I have been so impressed by the dedication and work ethic of so many volunteers who gave their time, money, expertise, and experience to have made those advancements possible. Many members have shared their visions and goals as we move into the future with this breed, and some have expressed frustration and concern over what they perceive as a lack of progress. These are all excellent ideas and I have always made it a point to share their correspondence with the Council. The communication with members and those elected to serve in governance of the organization are paramount to its existence and success. Without the reciprocal flow of information and ideas we would not be working together towards a solution, we would simply be complaining. Members, please continue and keep sharing your wishes and concerns with those members that serve on Council and the various working committees that guide and develop policy and rules. Most importantly, share with them your appreciation, as these members serve without any compensation for their time, travel, or expenses. They also must then find someone to fill in for them on their farms

while they are away representing the Society at various events throughout the country each year. Don’t take me wrong, serving as a member of Council has been a distinct honor for me. The privilege you have bestowed upon me; by being elected to serve as president of the Society has been one of the most fulfilling and humbling experiences of my life. I am sincerely grateful for this opportunity. I have met such interesting people who have been so welcoming and hospitable towards my wife Pat and me. I can hardly put into words the gratitude that I feel. We have made many lifelong friends, and we have had our lives so enriched. All I can do is extend my humble thank you to each and every member. Twenty-three issues ago, I wrote my first President’s Message and titled it “Opening the Gate.” As I write my last resident’s message and title it “Closing the Gate,” I hope my part of the team that served you on Council has been able make a small positive difference in the legacy of the Belted Galloway Society. I hope that I have been able to maintain the high level of service and integrity as so many who have held this office before me.

As I close the gate for the last time, take the opportunity to ask yourself; if you could make a difference, would you consider serving as a member of Council at some time in the future? I think you would find it to be as positive and rewarding experience as I have.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Happy New Year to us all!

2017 Louisville Wrap-Up

Michelle Ogle, Chairman Belted Galloway Show Committee Janie Tripp , Chairman Belted Galloway Junior Association Each year as we travel home from the North American International Live-stock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky, we cannot help but think that this year’s show was the BEST EVER! And year-after-year, we pleasant-ly witness a new level attained in the quality of cattle and integrity of our breeders and exhibitors. The 2017 shows were spectacular! The open show included 59 animals and was live-streamed. We hope that many folks took advantage of watching it online. Our junior exhibitors enjoyed pre-show activities that included a fitting clinic, a junior meeting, photo contest, showmanship and a herdsman con-test. All of our awards and activities could not be held without the faithful-ness of our donors who contribute with generous donations. Our silent auction raised $505. Show sponsors levels included:

Platinum Level Plus – over $200

Anderson Hill Farm (VT), Double M Ranch (TX), HC Sims Farms (PA) Magnolia Trace (MS), Meadowood Farm (NY) Sherwood Acres LLC (KY), Stones Throw (SC).

Platinum Level - $200 Fields Of Athenrye (VA), Klover Korners Farm (IL), Mitchell Ledge Farm (ME).

Gold Level - $150

Southdown Farm (NJ).

Silver Level - $100 Agri-Exposure, LLC (KY), Great Lakes Belted Galloway Association, Hav-A-Belt Galloways (WI), Pine View Farm (ME), Stewart Ranch (CA), TEK Cattle (WI), White Sulphur Farm (GA).

Bronze Level - $50 Antietam Farm (IL), K & E Wilkerson Farm (IA), Sutcliff Belties (IA), Wayside Valley Farm (IL). Hard work and attention to detail did not go unnoticed as Caroline Oatley (RI) and Marshall Finke (IN) were awarded the Herdsmen Awards. The BGJA has very talented photographers! Twenty-seven entries were entered in three categories that were split into two groups. First placings in the junior categories: Julian Hamilton (TX) — black/white; Julian Hamilton (TX) — color; Justin Posey (MS) — all others. Firsts in the senior categories: Heidi Latta (NC) — black/white; Heidi Latta (NC) — color; Claire Posey (MS) — all others. Wednesday’s activities also in-cluded a scavenger hunt with members learning the grounds of the North American by retrieving items at various locations. We had an impressive line-up of BGJA members and 29 cattle at Kathi Jurkowski National Junior Show! Congratulations to Caroline Oatley (RI) who received the $1000 Jackpot for her Grand Champion Steer. The $500 Jackpot went to Kamryn Forrest (RI) with her prospect steer.

Show results and photos are found on pages 4-5 of this issue.

These yearling bulls would be highly competitive in the show ring and make excellent herd bulls. The first bull is FSB Dugald 41642-B. DOB 11/10/16. Dugald is extremely deep ribbed, thick and loaded with a lot of natural muscling. He is sired by Meadowood XMan and is out of my favorite cow Aldermere Tara, which goes back to the Aldermere Wiga cow family. If you are looking to add some natural thickness and muscle to your herd he is an easy choice. Second bull is FSB Fingal 41643-B. DOB 10/ 21/16. Fingal is another strong bull with great depth of body and extremely good on his feet and legs with an excellent top line and hip structure. He stems back to the Aldermere Ronda cow family with such greats in his pedigree as Holbrook Hill Lilly. His sire is HCS Astaire. Fingal should be shown and would be extremely competitive on the show road. If you are looking for that outstanding show/herd bull contact, Four Starr Belties, Olathe, KS.
