TRIO PROGRAMS
Non-Residential 2014
The Federal TRIO Programs (TRIO) are Federal outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. TRIO includes eight programs targeted to serve and assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to post baccalaureate programs. TRIO also includes a training program for directors and staff of TRIO projects.
TRIO Programs
The term "TRiO" was coined to describe the first of these federal programs to be established.

SUMMER COMPONENT
SUMMER PROGRAM Residential Students are required to attend our six-week summer residential program. The summer component prepares students academically for the following school year and acquaint them with college life.
Non Residential Program Students who are not enrolled in the residential program are able to fulfill the summer academic requirements by completing the Alternative Summer Assignment.
BRIDGE PROGRAM After graduating, seniors can enroll in the second summer semester at UT Arlington, earn 6 hours of college credit and receive free tuition, books, housing, food, and recreation at no cost to themselves or their families
STIPEND PARTICIPATIONStudents can earn a fifteen dollar stipend each week of the summer program if they meet program guidelines.
The ultimate purpose of the summer component is to prepare the student
academically for the following school year and acquaint them with college life.

Alternative Summer Assignment: Option 2BUS SCHEDULE
Bus services will be provided from Monday, August 4th to Friday, August 8th. Students will be picked up at their respective high schools and brought to campus by 8:00 a.m. They will depart UT Arlington at 5:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The pick up times are below:

ACADEMIC PROCEDURES
Required TestingTesting is a necessary part of a program like Upward
Bound. We are required by the Department of Education to test our students and show that our program is indeed making a difference in their academic skills.
Additionally, testing helps us chart the progress of individual students and plan a curriculum that is responsive to their needs. Any time that tests are administered, we ask that all students be rested, alert, and ready to do their best. Any student whose scores are lower than previous testing may be required to re-test. To remain in good standing with the Upward Bound Program, participants must take all required tests.
If a student has a documented reason for not testing at the scheduled time, he or she must notify Upward Bound BEFORE the scheduled date and arrange for testing at an alternate time.

UPWARD BOUND PROGRAM
ACADEMIC PROCEDURES
Pre/Post TestsAll Upward Bound participants are required to take the pretests and
posttests administered by their instructors in summer program classes. These tests are used to
measure what the student learns in these classes over the course of the summer program. During the Summer Non-residential these test may be given electronically or by handout.
Students will not be permitted to participate in any classes or program activities until they
have:
Taken the pretests for all classes. Take the posttests at the end of the summer program to remain in
good standing with the program.
Students who do not complete all tests to the best of their ability will be placed on probation or

EXPECTED BEHAVIOR
Expected BehaviorAll Upward Bound staff persons, including instructors, have the duty
and right to enforce all program rules, policies, and regulations. Every Upward Bound
participant is expected to respect their authority and to comply with their directives.
Furthermore, instructors have a responsibility to report rules violations and negative behaviors.
SUPPLIES. Students will be supplied binders, filler paper, and dividers for their use during the summer program as needed. Students are expected to keep their supplies and study materials in order. Borrowing supplies or depending on other students or instructors to provide supplies is irresponsible and will be strongly discouraged. Headphones can be checked out from the Program. The Computer Lab is available from 8am-5pm daily.
PROMPTNESS AND ATTENDANCE. Students are expected to be complete their assignments ON TIME for all classes.
• Assignments will be posted by 10:00 a.m. Central Standard Time and Due no Later than 10:00 p.m. Central Standard time that Same day. Post-test due dates/times are 6:00 p.m.
• Students are to turn in assignments before the deadline date and time published.

EXPECTED BEHAVIOR
Expected Behavior cont’d Students are expected to cooperate fully with their teachers and
to take an active, positive interest in class activities. Students are to complete all in-class and out-of-class assignments made by their teachers ON TIME.
All work will be graded and students are expected to maintain at least a 75 average in each class to remain in good standing.
Makeup work will need to be done for any classes missed for any reason, including illness, appointments, and family concerns. It is the student's responsibility to find out, from either fellow students or the instructor, about any makeup work that is due and to complete that work in a timely manner.

EXPECTED BEHAVIOR
Expected Behavior cont’d STUDENTS ARE TO REFRAIN FROM THE FOLLOWING TYPES OF
BEHAVIOR:
a. Any behavior that interferes with the instructor's ability to conduct the class.
b. Any behavior that interferes with any student's ability to benefit from the instruction being provided or to complete the assigned work.
c. Any behavior that has a negative impact on the overall learning environment.
d. Rude or disrespectful behavior:
• Students will not argue with the instructor.• Students will not question or challenge the assignments or
the curriculum.• Students will not complain about having to do the assigned
work.• Students will show the utmost courtesy, respect, and
attentiveness to the instructor and to any staff person, guest or visitor who is present online

UPWARD BOUND PROGRAM
DRESS CODEBecause people are judged by their behavior and appearance,
participants in the Upward Bound program are to dress and behave in a manner that does not reflect negatively on them, the Upward Bound Program, or the university. Therefore, any clothing or behavior that is distracting, inappropriate, or indecent will not be tolerated.
Specifically:• Scarves, head rags, bandanas, caps etc. are not to be worn at any time. Hats
may only be worn outside to block the sun or rain but must be removed prior to entering a building, classroom, or vehicle.
• Clothing that is revealing, such as halter tops, spaghetti strap tops or shirts/blouses revealing cleavage or the midsection of the body (stomach/navel area and back side) will not be allowed. Shorts and skirts can be no more than 6 inches above the knee.
• Pants/overalls and shorts are to be worn properly and with a belt; no sagging jeans/pants or shorts.
• Clothing bearing obscene, vulgar or suggestive references to drugs, alcohol, sex, tobacco products, or any negative influences is not to be worn at any time.
• Wearing of sleepwear, pajamas, lounge wear, slippers, and/or blankets, outside of the residence hall will not be permitted.
• Females can not wear two-piece swim gear (one piece swimsuits must be worn) and males can not wear shorts (swim trunks must be worn).

CULTURAL /EDUCATION ENRICHMENT
Field Trips & Enrichment ActivitiesParticipants may be provided opportunities to go on several field
trips while in the summer program. These trips are planned to enhance the students'
education, as well as personal growth. It is the philosophy of this program that the well-rounded
education of students cannot be limited exclusively to classroom experiences. Therefore, it
is imperative that activities are planned that allow students to explore new
environments and experience a variety of activities. The program will pay all expenses associated
with the planned activities during the field trips. Participants are to adhere to the following guidelines when
traveling:• Be prepared to leave at the designated time.• Dress appropriately, as requested for the trip.• Be considerate of others when traveling, speak in moderate
tones, avoid being loud and boisterous. Music/video players, and/or other electronic devices can not be used during presentations, guided tours or when someone is speaking in an official capacity.
• Remember the Program Expectations and act accordingly.

Field Trips & Enrichment Activities cont’d• Remember the Program Expectations and act accordingly.• Stay with the group unless otherwise directed.• Remember the standard rules of etiquette when eating at a
restaurant: remain seated (excepted to go to the restrooms); speak in moderate tones to persons at your table; be aware of others dining in the restaurant; be patient with your waiter/waitress; leave a tip.
• Plan to return to campus with your group unless your parent/guardian and the Upward Bound Director or Coordinator has made prior arrangements.
Students who violate program policy as reported by Student Program Administrators,
Instructors, Residential Advisors/Assistants and University Officials will not participate in
program activities. The rights to participate in planned activities must be earned and is at the
discretion of the Coordinator/Director.

TRANSPORTATION
AutomobilesUpward Bound students are not allowed to have or drive their own
cars on campus. If anystudent is seen in any vehicle, disciplinary action will be taken.
Should you ride TO CAMPUS OR RETURN HOME WITH ANYONE EXCEPT YOUR PARENTS, you must
obtain a written permission slip signed by your parent and the Director of the Upward
Bound program.
Bus PolicyAny student causing discipline problems will be barred from riding
the bus and placed onprobation until an Upward Bound Administrator has counseled with
the student and parent regarding the situation. After the second discipline problem, the
student will be permanently barred from the bus and depending on the situation will be either
placed on strict probation or terminated from the program. All students are to adhere to the bus
drivers' rules and regulations and show proper respect for the bus, the driver, and
other riders at all times.

UPWARD BOUND PROGRAM
CELL PHONESStudents do not need or are allowed to use their cell phones
during classroom time. Any cell phone seen or heard will be confiscated and held until a parent arrives to pick it up from the office. Additionally, all students involved will lose points and could possibly be suspended. Upward Bound will not assume responsibility for any cell phone lost, stolen, and/or mishandled; nor allow parents to seek restitution from other program participants for damages and/or charges.

UPWARD BOUND PROGRAM
STIPEND POLICYStudents can earn a fifteen dollar stipend each week of the summer
program if they meetprogram guidelines. However, in the event a student fails to meet the
program objectives,goals, and regulations, he/she will forfeit all or part of his/her
stipend. Also, if a student does not inform the staff of non-receipt due to address changes or
other unforeseen problemswithin 30 days he/she forfeit their stipend. Students must meet all of their program responsibilities to be eligible
to receive a stipend. Stipends will not be processed until all summer assessment reports
have been completed.

PROGRAM CONTRACTI have read and understand the Alternative Summer Assignment
guidelines for the University of Texas at Arlington Upward Bound Program. I agree to abide by all the terms therein and to encourage other Upward Bound members to so abide.
By choosing to participate in Upward Bound, I understand that I am expected to commit myself to the following:
1. Completing the Alternative Summer Assignment for non-residential participants
and any other requirements previously outlined in the handbook.2. Obeying all rules and regulations of the Upward Bound Program.3. Accepting responsibility for my own behavior and the consequences
that may follow.As a non-residential participant in the Upward Bound Summer Program,
I understand that if I fail to complete the Alternative Summer Assignment or violate any policy or program regulation, I will be subject to loss of participation in field trips and cultural enrichment as well as suspension and/or termination from the program. My goal is to remain academically engaged throughout the summer so that I am prepared and ready for the upcoming school year. I sign this contract as part of my commitment to Upward Bound, myself, and my family, and I agree to the terms in this contract.

PROGRAM CONTRACT
Participant Dismissal and Appeal Process
A participant in the Upward Bound Program may be dismissed from the program for failing
to live according to the students expected behaviors and general rules and guidelines outlined
in this student handbook. No warning will be given or sent to Parents due to time restraints
and the length of the summer program.
Steps for dismissal and student appeal are on page 45 and 46 of the Student Handbook.
