Update – Jan 14, 2014
PRINCIPLES 1. All courses must be passed 2. Some courses to serve as prerequisites for others
CV1 to be a prereq for CV2 but not Resp 2
3. Exam questions to meet the MCC standard where appropriate “good” MCQs
4. Multiple assessments per course are required Improves validity, reduces stakes, increases flexibility, increases
opportunities for assistance
5. Ongoing assistance must be provided to students 6. Assessment plan must be logistically feasible
FRAMEWORK FOR ASSESSMENT – Modular Courses
M0 – Foundation – 4 week course M1 – Normal Anatomy/Physiology – 1o courses
running sequentially/concurrently – 35 weeks M2 – Abnormal Anatomy/Physiology – 12 courses
running sequentially/concurrently – 36 weeks M3 – Consolidation – 10 weeks Y1: M0 + M1 + 1/3 M2 Y2: 2/3 M2 + M3
FRAMEWORK FOR ASSESSMENT – Modular Courses
For each course (M0, M1, M2): “Base Model” = 30% MCQ midterm (with strugglers flagged and
assisted – tbd) + 70% MCQ final Course Leader may add credit for attendance, written
assignments, lab exams etc. In this circumstance, course leader must provide a defensible
scoring rubric, efficient marking. In any case, at least 75% of the grade must be based on MCQs. Final MCQ exam not to be worth more than 70% of total course
mark Ideally, should have a bank of 200 usable MCQs per course M3??
For Modular Course Failures Failing students must pass a supplemental exam (50 MCQs
– 100%) Remediation to occur in the summer, except for CV 1 and
Resp 1, in order to minimize ‘concurrent remediation’. Students who fail the supplemental will be given one more
chance (another MCQ exam vs. oral vs. written). Students who fail the second supplemental fail the year,
and must repeat it. Only a certain number of supplemental exams will be
permitted – up to 9 Course Weights (CW) in Y1, and up to 10 CW in Y2.
Students who exceed this cutoff are excluded from supplementals, and must repeat the year.

PSEC Sequential presentation of assessment plan, course by
course To this point, a semi-concrete plan has been presented
for M0 and CV1/CV2
FRAMEWORK FOR ASSESSMENT – Longitudinal Courses
1. Clinical Reasoning 2. Clinical Skills 3. Professionalism 4. Community Health Sciences 5. Indigenous Health – will be formative only!
FRAMEWORK FOR ASSESSMENT – Longitudinal Courses
Will separate each 4 yr course into yearly courses. Do not have to pass M1 or M2 CHS, rather must pass Y1
and Y2 CHs. Schedule a series of assessments, each worth a
percentage of the final year’s mark, at appropriate intervals during the year. This has been done for CS!
FRAMEWORK FOR ASSESSMENT – Longitudinal Courses
Assessments must be congruent with the curriculum. While CHS will contribute to modular and/or other
longitudinal courses, there will be material that CHS will ‘own’ and will be responsible to examine.
Multiple assessment formats are acceptable: MCQ exams, SAQ exams or take-home assignments (require a scoring rubric), group assessment, etc.
FRAMEWORK FOR ASSESSMENT – Longitudinal Courses Each Longitudinal Course must be passed. Failing students must remediate, in the summer, and
pass a supplemental exam. Supplemental exams in up to TWO longitudinal
courses will be permitted. Students who fail more than two longitudinal courses,
or any single supplemental exam in a longitudinal course will be required to repeat the year.
