Unlockinghuman potential
One third of the world’s people, the majority of them in developing countries, either
do not have access to or cannot afford a nutritious, healthy and balanced diet. Even
a diet that provides sufficient calories may be lacking in important micronutrients –
this is what we call hidden hunger.
Over time, hidden hunger has a devastating impact, not only on the health and
productivity of individuals but also on the social and economic development of a
country. There is plentiful evidence that improving nutrition in developing countries
is fundamental to breaking the cycle of poverty.
More specifically, providing the right nutrients to pregnant women and their infants
is of vital importance. It is now known that optimizing the quality of nutrition during
a critical 1,000 day window of opportunity from conception until a child reaches two
years of age has a dramatic impact on its physical and cognitive development, and
substantially improves its prospects in adulthood. High-quality nutrition in this
phase lays the foundations for a future in which children grow up capable of leading
the struggle for progress in their own communities and countries.
DSM’s Nutrition Improvement Program is well equipped to provide scientific and
technical support, as well as high-quality micronutrients tailored to the needs of
all segments of developing societies, in the fight against hidden hunger. We are
passionately committed to joining forces with all stakeholders to work on sustainable,
affordable and – most important – effective solutions to unlock the potential in every
individual and make life brighter for everyone.
In 12 months malnutrition causes:
• 1 million children to die before the age of five
• 50,000 women to die during or soon after childbirth
• 19 million infants to be born with impaired mental capacity
• 100,000 infants to be born with preventable physical defects
• The global cost of malnutrition annually is US$ 19 billion in lost
adult work performance and related health expenditure

04
At DSM we firmly believe that investing in people’s nutrition is a humanitarian
imperative. But we also believe that it is a wise investment in monetary terms.
Taking a pragmatic, businesslike approach to meeting the major challenges facing
our planet, the Copenhagen Consensus 2008 invited a panel of eminent economists
from around the world to look for cost-efficient solutions. This panel concluded
that in terms of the benefit-to-cost ratio, micronutrient supplements for children
represent the best possible development investment, with micronutrient food
fortification following closely in third place. Improving nutrition is clearly a highly
cost-effective intervention.
According to the Copenhagen Consensus 2008
• an investment of US$ 60 million a year in micronutrient provision could
yield benefits in terms of improved health, lower mortality and increased
income opportunities worth US$ 1 billion.
• an annual investment of US$ 19 million in fortification could bring
US$ 570 million in benefits.
The World Bank concurs on food fortification:
«The control of vitamin and mineral deficiencies is one of the mostextraordinary development-related scientific advances of recentyears. Probably no other technology available today offers as largean opportunity to improve lives and accelerate development atsuch low cost and in such a short time.»
A wise investmentin our future

Rising tothe challengeNIP responds to the challenges of improving nutrition in three ways:
We develop products for specific target groups and needs
Micronutrients to improve the quality of nutrition are needed across a broad
spectrum of situations, from emergency relief following natural disasters to long-
term health and welfare improvement strategies such as school feeding programs.
In collaboration with organizations and industry partners we support and develop
sustainable solutions that meet the specific micronutrient requirements of diverse
target groups, including:
• Ready-to-use therapeutic foods (RUTFs) for the treatment of severe malnutrition
• Fortified processed foods
• Nutritional supplements for people living under special conditions
(e.g. malaria-affected regions)
• Micronutrient powders, available as single servings for home fortification
or multiple servings for use in hospitals, school feeding programs, etc.
Our products and solutions are flexible, safe and affordable and ideally suited to a
wide range of applications.
106
We support staple food fortification programs
Staple food fortification provides important micronutrients without necessitating a
change in the dietary habits of a population. A well-designed and properly managed
food fortification program is one of the most cost-effective strategies available for
improving public health in a sustainable way.
• Universal programs for fortification of staple foods, such as wheat flour in the
USA, reach almost the entire population of a given region.
• Targeted programs reach specific sections of the population who cannot benefit
from universal fortification: e.g., children below the age of two years cannot
benefit from universal flour fortification but benefit from targeted fortification.
• Mandatory programs that are legislated and monitored by governments on a
national scale can be implemented with a negligible impact on the cost of the
end product, but have the potential to improve the health of the entire population.
• Voluntary programs driven by private industry and development agencies can
have a major and sustainable impact if consumers are sufficiently aware of
their benefits.
NIP has not only the scientific and technical know-how, but also the necessary
experience of establishing regulatory systems and bringing products to market to
support all forms of fortification programs.
We develop new sustainable and inclusive business models
Strengthening the food supply chain is a very effective way to raise living and
nutrition standards in developing countries. We work intensively with local
companies and other organizations on local solutions to bring top-quality, nutritious
and tasty products to market. With the support and advice of our local partners we
can ensure these products are aspirational, affordable and accessible to low-income
populations at the so-called Base of the Pyramid.
We intervene at three levels to achieve this:
1. We use feedback from our local partners along with our own scientific and
technical know-how to develop more nutritious local products.
2. We develop business models with local organizations. In this case we make use
of their network and of existing infrastructure (retailers, health care centers, etc.).
Or we introduce new partners.
3. We combine our marketing and communications capabilities with the local
partner’s knowledge of the market and the target groups.
We create acceptance and demand by including all stakeholders in the planning and
the development. Supporting local companies and organizations creates opportunities
for the whole community; it can, for example, create new jobs, or offer new income
opportunities for farmers, retailers and logistics enterprises. Furthermore, additional
income enables families to buy more and better food, pay school fees and get
better medical care. This holistic approach makes for healthier people and reduces
healthcare costs. The food value chain itself is stronger, and tuned to the needs
and aspirations of low income groups.

A competentpartner
Profiting from the expertise, experience and resources of DSM’s Nutritional
Products division, NIP is fully equipped to support effective nutrition intervention
programs of all kinds anywhere in the world.
The Nutrition Improvement Program is entirely focused on raising awareness of
hidden hunger and its consequences, and providing solutions:
• NIP supports public awareness and education programs, because without the
acceptance and understanding of the public, any intervention is at risk of failing.
• We believe that for optimum impact the top priority is effectiveness – delivering
the adequate amounts of micronutrients in the best possible formulation, then
monitoring interventions and making necessary adjustments to improve efficacy.
• We know that quality is a critical driver for effectiveness. This is why we initiated
the Quality is Essential Initiative (QiE) initiative to establish the scientific and
technical rationale for choosing the best-value food vehicles, ingredients,
micronutrient blends and other program components.
Backed by the scientific and business resources of the global DSM corporation, NIP
has the flexibility to respond quickly and sensitively to feedback from our partners
and develop tailor-made products that are:
• nutritious
• filling
• safe
• protected from outside influences
• affordable
• available
• trusted and
• meet the taste of the population

Experienced Our team consists not only of food scientists, technologists and engineers, but
also includes marketing and communications experts, as well as public health and
regulations experts. We have competent and experienced regional managers around
the globe in Africa, China, India, Asia Pacific, North America and Latin America.
We do not stand alone:
• Through the scientists at DSM, we have links to local and global scientific
communities and key opinion leaders. We use insights of scientific research on
effectiveness of nutrition interventions to develop new products and solutions.
• Through fortification alliances, NIP is involved in the design and implementation
of regulatory frameworks for food fortification.
• NIP engages with governments and organizations to ensure that nutrition
remains high on their agendas. We advocate for effective solutions that reach
target populations, providing them with all micronutrients lacking in their diet.
Governments, organizations and the private sector know that it will only be
possible to create sustainable solutions with measureable results if we work
together, understanding and learning from each other. Joining forces with the
right partners is essential if we are to achieve ambitious goals like the elimination
of hidden hunger.
NIP has established alliances and partnerships with many key international and
national stakeholders.

Partnerships arecrucial for success
In addition to our own network, NIP experts use their technical and scientific
know-how to support DSM’s partnerships with:
DSM has been partnering with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP),
the largest provider of food aid to the world’s hungry, since 2007. The WFP feeds
and nourishes an average of 90 million people in over 80 countries every year, with
DSM providing expertise, products and financial assistance under the «Improving
Nutrition – Improving Lives» program.
NIP specialists play an active role in this partnership by developing, in collaboration
with WFP, products tailored to meet the special dietary needs of specific target
groups.
Project Laser Beam (PLB) is a public-private partnership that brings together the
expertise of UN agencies with that of Fortune 500 companies, public-private
partnerships and others in the private sector, working with local governments
and companies to find new solutions to old problems.
PLB will focus initially on Bangladesh and Indonesia – countries where rates of
child malnutrition are unacceptably high, but governments have demonstrated
their commitment to tackling the problem.
Projects include:
• Food fortification
• Nutritional dietary supplements for children
• Ready-to-use foods requiring no water or cooking
• Sanitation and hand-washing
• Access to clean water
• Deworming
• Immunization
• Therapeutic feeding for the severely malnourished
• Education on the benefits of breastfeeding
• Nutrition education and others as needed

At the beginning of 2011 DSM and the United States Agency for International
Development (USAID) started a collaboration to leverage their respective competencies,
expertise, products and services to meet the micronutrient needs of populations in
the developing world.
The initial focus of the collaboration is on:
• Rice fortification
• The nutrition objectives of the US Government’s global hunger and food security
initiative Feed the Future and the United States Global Health Initiative
• Support for the efforts of the 1,000 Days project to help countries jumpstart the
Scaling Up Nutrition Road Map, with the support of other development partners
In addition, DSM will provide input to USAID’s Office of Food For Peace in order to
help improve nutritional value, quality, shelf life, and methods for testing food aid
commodities.
DSM has become one of the first corporate partners of the initiative Partners in
Food Solutions. This non-profit organization harnesses the business and technical
expertise of volunteer employees at General Mills, Cargill and DSM for the benefit of
small food processors throughout Africa. The goal is to improve the ability of those
companies to produce high-quality, nutritious and safe food at affordable prices,
and to increase demand for the crops of smallholder farmers who supply those
businesses.
Partners in Food Solutions is currently assisting food companies in Kenya, Malawi,
Tanzania and Zambia. Through infrastructure development and human-capital
development, the program is helping to build a vibrant, sustainable food supply
chain and so attain a more secure future.
DSM is a founding member of the Amsterdam Initiative against Malnutrition (AIM),
which was established in 2009 as a Dutch public-private partnership. It is a joint
initiative of GAIN, the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Unilever, AkzoNobel,
Wageningen University and ICCO.
The initiative represents an opportunity to combine the know-how of major players
in the food and nutrition industry in six countries: Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa,
Ethiopia, Ghana and Mozambique. AIM’s goal is to eliminate malnutrition for
100 million people in Africa by 2015.
Its efforts will focus on:
• Jointly developing and piloting innovative models to reach low income
populations, by engaging them not only as consumers, but also as producers,
suppliers or distributors in the value chain
• Improving supply and access to affordable nutritious products
• Reducing vitamin and mineral deficiencies by 20 percent
• Targeting vulnerable populations, especially children and mothers

Global activities
North America
In line with its position in the develo-
ped world our involvement in North
America focuses on:
• Close cooperation with a number
of key stakeholders to improve the
nutritional value of a variety of
foods donated from US government
and other organizations
• Awareness-raising to keep the
importance of nutrition and micro-
nutrients on the agendas of these
key stakeholders
• Cooperation with US industry
partners to achieve local solutions
for developing countries
Latin America
Many countries in Latin America have
made huge progress in improving the
nutritional status of their populations.
NIP contributes by:
• Placing our technical and scientific
know-how at the disposal of
governments in countries such as
Chile and Costa Rica, who are
rolling out programs for mandatory
fortification of staples like rice,
flour or sugar
• Supporting initiatives to improve
nutrition through school feeding,
as in Colombia, or through individual
or institutional fortification of ready-
to-eat meals in countries such as
Costa Rica, Dominican Republic,
Ecuador, Haiti and Peru by providing
micronutrient powders tailored to
their needs
• Developing solutions together with
industry partners, health authorities
and other organizations, especially
to improve the nutrition of pregnant
and lactating mothers and their
babies to promote early child
development
14
Around the globe, NIP is part of a network achieving amazing progress in nutrition improvement. The flexibility of our
organization allows our interventions to range from the immediate provision of micronutrient supplements for individuals
caught up in emergencies such as wars and natural disasters to support for sustainable mandatory national fortification
programs. Between these two poles lies another primary objective: that of helping local stakeholders meet the nutritional
needs of their own communities by encouraging new forms of business development through local partnerships.
Africa
In Africa we have an extensive network
of partnerships with government
bodies, organizations and industry
partners. The continent is one of our
key regions, where we are active in
many different ways:
• Together with our partners we
promote nutrition interventions
that are as diverse as the nutrition
situation in each region. Staple food
fortification, especially for wheat,
rice and sugar, is high on the agendas
of governments. Our specialists
have supported the South African
authorities, for example, in the
design and implementation of
mandatory fortification of maize
and wheat flour which was
implemented in 2003.
• We supply micronutrient powders
for individual or institutional
fortification, fortified blended
foods and school feeding programs.
• Together with local companies we
develop new inclusive business
models. As part of our partnerships
with USAID and the World Food
Programme we develop local food
production capacities and increase
the nutritional value of products to
comply with UN standards. Further,
we share expertise and hence
contribute to the development of
local capacities.
Asia
Our involvement in Asia reflects the
diversity of its regions, which include
dynamic emerging economies and
areas of intense poverty prone to
natural disasters:
• We have regional managers in India
and China as well as in Singapore
for the Asia Pacific countries,
including Indonesia and Thailand,
where we concentrate on rice and
flour fortification
• In other countries, like Afghanistan,
Bangladesh, Cambodia, Vietnam,
Malaysia, Sri Lanka and the
Philippines, we work on targeted
supplementation programs with
micronutrient powders, fortified
blended foods or lipid-based
nutritional supplements
• Everywhere we partner with local
stakeholders to develop inclusive
new business models and support
the development and marketing of
locally produced products with a
higher nutritional value affordable
for people with low incomes

Raw Rice
Milled Rice
But fortifying rice is not easy: traditional soaking and rinsing of rice with water prior
to cooking removes most of the added micronutrients.
The hot extrusion technology with encapsulated micronutrients represents a
breakthrough in rice fortification.
The NutriRice kernels look, taste and behave exactly like normal rice; the micro-
nutrients embedded in the kernel are efficiently protected from external influences
during washing and cooking. The process uses rice flour as raw material, and kernels
can be made to customers’ specific requirements of shape, color and micronutrient
content. NutriRice kernels are mixed with natural rice at a ratio of 0.5 - 2%.

Better performance at the Dandelion Middle School, Beijing
The children of 600 migrant workers attend Dandelion Middle School in Beijing,
some of them as resident pupils. As part of a pilot project initiated and carried out
by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) all the pupils were
given NutriRice for a period of eight months. Their food was further supplemented
with vitamin-A-enriched oil and iron-enriched soy sauce.
«We found that the effects of micronutrient deficiencies were reduced by 50%,
raising the pupils’ general nutritional condition to the average urban level, and the
teachers observed an improvement in physical performance and concentration.»
Dr. Hong Zheng, founder of the Dandelion Middle School
Efficacy trial in Bangalore, India
In a poor urban setting in Bangalore, India, DSM collaborated with the St. John’s
Research Institute to conduct a trial to study the effects of NutriRice on school
children aged 6-12 years.
After six months the positive impact of NutriRice was clearly evident. Specifically,
the children’s B-vitamin status had improved significantly and there was an
improvement in physical performance, particularly physical endurance, among
the children who consumed NutriRice.

MicronutrientpowdersInitially a home fortification concept developed in partnership with WFP as part of
the relief response to the Cyclone Sidr in Bangladesh, our micronutrient powder
sachets for individual use were launched in 2008 under the brand name MixMe™.
Since then many millions of these sachets have been distributed through WFP and
other organizations, and the powders are now also available in multiple portions for
use in settings such as schools and hospitals.
The micronutrient powder is simply sprinkled over a cooked meal or dissolved in a
drink. It disperses without changing the taste, consistency or appearance of the
food or drink. It is very easy to use, effective and affordable. It requires no change
in dietary habits and is especially suitable for small children. Micronutrient
composition can be adapted to the individual needs of the target population.
Micronutrient powders for specific target groups
Micronutrient powder with phytase – an improved solution to combat iron deficiency
Iron and zinc deficiencies are among the most common nutrient deficiencies in the
world. Attempts to supplement affected populations with high doses of iron have
proved problematic in malaria-endemic regions. Failure to absorb iron in these
regions may be linked to the available diet, which is often high in whole-grain cereals
and legumes. These foods contain phytate, which binds minerals, making them
unavailable for absorption by the human body. Phytase is an enzyme that helps
release the nutrients, making them absorbable.
Micronutrient powders with phytase solve the longstanding problem of supplying
essential iron without potential adverse side effects. In addition to all the usual
vitamins, the new formulation provides low doses of iron in a readily bioavailable
form, along with zinc, extra vitamin C and a phytase which is active at stomach pH.
Such micronutrient powders provide sufficient iron to iron deficient people, but do
not overload iron sufficient ones.
Micronutrient powder with soy – a complete and wholesome meal in itself
Micronutrient powder with soy consists of fortified soybean powder which, when
mixed with water, becomes a nutritious porridge. The formulation, which was
originally developed for the Chinese market, contains iron, zinc, calcium, vitamins A,
D, B1, B2, B12, C and folate – everything a young child needs to develop properly.

MixMe™ for the children of the Sedimosang Daycare Centrein Ivory Park, South Africa
The Sedimosang Centre in Ivory Park Township, Johannesburg, was founded in 2003
and provides day care for about 100 needy children aged from a few months to
about 6 years. Most of the children come from very poor families living on state
social benefits. Some of the children are orphans living with their grandparents.
Wherever there is poverty there is a high risk of micronutrient deficiencies and this
is why the children of Sedimosang get MixMe with their daily porridge.
Josephine Mhlophekile Mpofu (Ma Josephine), founder of Sedimosang, has noticed
a difference in the children since they have been given MixMe:
«The children are more active. Many of them used to be apathetic and slept a lot.
Today they play and are much more concentrated. Even one little boy who used to
just sit there without joining in is now interested in his surroundings and enjoys
playing.»
DSM’s Ying Yang Bao is helping improve social equity in China
«Children in poor rural areas of China lag far behind their urban counterparts with
regard to care and nourishment. Our government is keen to target the critical
window of opportunity in the early years with intervention measures to ensure an
equal start in life for children born in these areas. In 2009 CDRF launched a pilot
program on early child development in Qinghai and Yunnan provinces. Besides
establishing ‘Mommy Schools’ to educate pregnant women and mothers of young
children about childcare and nutrition, we distributed micronutrient powders with
soy from DSM free to 6-24-month-old infants. Here in China these powders are
called Ying Yang Bao.
Just three months into the program, the anemia rate among the infants had
dropped by nearly one-third; six months later diarrhea and fever were reduced by
70% and 86% respectively. And now a large-scale impact evaluation survey has
found that stunting among 0-3-year-olds in the program has dropped to below the
national average for rural areas (from 10% to 7.5%).»
