Open access is mainly a response to what is known as the serials crisis: annually increasing journal subscription prices, which make sub-scription-based journals increasingly unafford-able.
Many university libraries around the world have had to cancel existing subscriptions, or are unable to keep up with subscribing to new jour-nals, because the cost of publication has risen disproportionately to their budgets.
With open access publishing, the cost of peer-review and production of an article is borne by the institute of the author by payment of a one-time flat fee. Conversely, readers and their institutes are no longer charged for accessing the journals they need.
For researchers, open access brings the con-venience of immediate access to the literature that they need—no matter for which university or company they work, or whether they just want to read a paper in their spare time at home.
For authors, open access means a much wider circle of readers due to the easy access to their research papers. The interested general public is also able to access research works, giving higher transparency to the outcome of taxpayer money spent on research.

You are invited to contribute a research article, a short communication or a comprehensive review for consideration and publication in Nanomaterials (ISSN 2079-4991). Nanomateri-als is an international open access journal pub-lished by MDPI online quarterly. Manuscripts prepared in Microsoft Word or LaTeX can be submitted to the Editorial Office online at www.mdpi.com. Nanomaterials is published in open access format—research articles, reviews and other contents are released on the Internet immedi-ately after acceptance. The scientific commu-nity and the general public can unlimitedly ac-cess the content for free as soon as it is published.
Nanomaterials is a new journal and publication fees are fully waived for papers submitted in 2012. However, a fee of 250 CHF may apply for those articles that need major editing and formatting and/or English editing. We would be pleased to welcome you as one of our authors. What Does It Really Mean?
Nanomaterials (ISSN 2076-4991) is an international and interdisciplinary scholarly open access journal. It publishes reviews, regular research papers, communications, and short notes that are relevant to any field of study that involves nanomaterials, with respect to their science and application.
Scope of Nanomaterials
Nanomaterials are materials with typical size features in the lower nanometer size range and characteristic mesoscopic properties; for example quantum size effects. These propeties make them attractive objects of fundametal research and potential new applications. The scope of Nanomaterials covers the preparation, characterization and application of all nanomaterials. The following examples may provide a guide to what will be covered (not exclusive):
Nanomaterials:
Nanoparticles, coatings and thin films,
inorganic-organic hybrids and composites (i.e. MOFs), membranes, nano-alloys, quantum dots, self-assemblies, graphene, nanotubes, etc
Methodologies:
Synthesis of organic, inorganic, and hybrid
nanomaterials
Characterization of mesoscopic properties
Modelling of nanomaterials and/or
mesospcopic effects
Applications:
Any application of new nanomaterials or
