Volantino master EN 11-12
The National University Council (CUN), an elected body that represents
the Italian academic system and formulates proposal and gives advice
to the Minister of University, has recently pointed out that the name
“University Master” is used in Italy with reference to professional
education and training courses following the 1st or the 2nd cycle degree.
This may determine confusion and may be misleading, because in all
European Higher Education Area, except for Italy , the name “Master” is
exclusively and unmistackably referred only to the 2nd cycle degree
(Italian “Laurea Magistrale”);
The lack of clearness may impact on the Italian universities
internationalization because it represents an obstacle to the recognition
of the degree awarded and its consequent value in the labour market
(EQF & QTI);
1st and 2nd level University Master
What is the problem?
CUN asked the Minister of University to:
adopt measures to state that the name “Master” can be used
only as the English translation of Italian 2nd cycle degree “Laurea
Magistrale”;
appoint another name for the existing 1st and 2nd level
University Masters, such as “high scientific and/or professional
education university courses” and fix the minimum of 60 credits.
A possible solution
1st and 2nd level University Master
…..promote the enhacement of higher level competences and
skills;
……promote the enhacement of the operational abilities and
applications related to specific competences and skills;
…….promote professional refresher for workers.
