Introducing Lync Basic
Lync Basic is a less-feature rich client for customers who are licensed for Lync functionality on-premises or online but are not licensed for the full Lync client for some or all of their end users.
Lync Basic is a free download, available from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35451 (32-bit) and
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35450 (64-bit)
The full list of Lync Basic and other Lync client features is published at http://technet.microsoft.com/library/gg425836(v=ocs.15)
Authenticated users require User or Device CALs, and shared devices may require Device CALs
Active Directory authenticated users require either a User CAL for unlimited devices associated with their username OR a Device CAL for every device from which they authenticate to Lync Server.
Shared devices such as conference phones, IP phones, kiosks, or hot desking devices used by multiple users require Device CALs if they are primarily used by users without User CALs.
Devices such as USB Peripherals and analog devices do not require User CALs or Device CALs.
External users in most cases do not require additional licenses
External users who are not employees (e.g., business partners, offsite contractors, or temporary staff) can connect to Lync Server without an additional CAL purchase required.*
Federated users licensed under another organizations Lync 2013 or previous version license can see presence and connect with Lync Server users without an additional license.
Anonymous users (e.g., inbound callers, anonymous conference participants) do not require an additional license
Public IM Connectivity (PIC) users require a PIC license in some cases, but for many Public IM networks this functionality is included with Lync.* Customer agreement s with Microsoft include details about which users are covered under VL
Server and CAL Prerequisites
Additional Scenarios**Core Requirements
Microsoft Lync Server 2013
Microsoft Windows Server
Microsoft SQL Server*
Skill Search: Microsoft SharePoint Server
Unified Messaging: Microsoft Exchange Server
Office Interop: Microsoft Office
* Customers deploying a Standard topology for fewer than 5000 users may use SQL Server Express** Specific requirements vary by scenario
Top Questions
Why are you raising prices for customers who bought Standard Edition Servers?
The single Lync Server 2013 edition is priced 10% less than the 2010 Enterprise server, and has features that make it more valuable:
External Connector (EC) rights for all licensed workloads are included, a value of more than $6K per server vs. Lync Server 2010
Easier to scale from limited release to large scale– there is no need to rebuy servers for larger or more redundancy
Even at the new prices, server licensing costs are less than 10% of the Lync Server software license cost of even a small Lync deployment.
Customers who are most significantly impacted by this change, small deployments of IM/P only, should look at Lync Online for their needs.
Why should customers buy Lync 2013 if there is a free Lync Basic 2013 client
The Lync Basic 2013 client is for customers with rights to Lync Online or Lync Server on premises who are not currently licensed for the full Lync client in Office ProPlus, but is not a replacement for Lync 2013. There are a number of significant features that are not in Basic, such as:
VDI
Skill Search
Recording
Note Sharing
Multiparty video
Delegation
Advanced Voice FeaturesFull client details are available at http://technet.microsoft.com/library/gg425836(v=ocs.15)
