Executive Summary
UNCW’s University Studies General Education program adds value to the UNCW degree by 1) laying foundations that ensure students are prepared to succeed 2) exposing students to a broad range of disciplinary-based approaches and perspectives and 3) building core competencies of information literacy, writing, and critical reasoning. Approaches and perspectives classes and competency-building classes are often also part of the structure of UNCW’s majors. So students move through the curriculum, in planning and in practice, by taking courses that may be part of both their declared (or prospective) major AND University Studies.
We selected five majors (Biology, Communication Studies, Elementary Education, Marketing, and Nursing) representing each College and created four-year academic plans to demonstrate how students successfully integrate and complete University Studies and major requirements. :. Actual student transcripts presented in this packet make it clearer how students progress. We have color-coded the transcripts for both a “freshman start” student and a transfer student to show what this looks like in theory and practice for two very different majors, biology and one of our business tracks (marketing). Other transcripts similarly coded for our other three identified majors are available on request. The broad patterns demonstrated in these packet materials are typical for most degree programs.

Data Analysis
Taken collectively, the degree plans and transcripts show how University Studies and major requirements overlap in important areas. University Studies was designed to have a vertical reach, meaning some general education requirements (information literacy, writing intensive, quantitative literacy, and capstone) will be completed in the latter half of a student’s academic career. There are some challenges with higher credit majors (i.e. nursing at 99 credits) but the profiles outlined below show a student’s ability to fulfill all of the requirements and graduate within a 4-5 year timeline. This packet also includes curricular worksheets designed to support a student’s understanding of their degree requirements. Strong academic advising support is essential to a good academic experience. The University College is the first academic home for all freshmen, military, and early college students. The University College also works with transfer students who are missing requirements that prevent them from moving directly into their major. Strong academic advising support continues for all students in the Colleges that they matriculate into once they declare their major.
3
The student transcripts and the degree plans offered here (again, more are available upon request) show how students should and typically do work efficiently through University Studies requirements as they pursue majors and take electives. The balance between electives, University Studies courses, courses in the major and courses that cover both major and University Studies requirements varies from student to student and major to major, but well-advised students can complete requirements efficiently and in ways that keeps the academic experience well-balanced. Across the majors we looked at freshmen admits generally took between 30-50% of their courses to fulfill major requirements (coded blue in our degree plans and transcripts). 10% or so of courses taken (coded green) fulfilled both general education and major requirements. University Studies courses (coded yellow) consistently represented about 25% of courses taken. The balance of courses taken (20-30%) were either electives or courses taken to fulfill a minor or double major. Percentages for transfers followed a similar pattern. All available evidence to date (including registrar tracking of total credit hours at graduation and an Office of Institutional Planning, Analytics and Effectiveness (IPAE) report on average “semesters to graduation” indicate that, under the new University Studies system, time to degree is not delayed and indeed appears to be shortening. Data on graduation progress and semester hours at graduation is critical, and needs to be carefully tracked as University Studies is fully implemented and as degree requirements in programs evolve. Student progress to degree does depend on strong advising and good support for their academic development.

Cameron School of Business- Student Services Advising Center Fact Sheet for Pre-Business Majors
HOW DO I GET ADMITTED TO THE CAMERON SCHOOL OF BUSINESS? The Admission process starts while you are still in University College. As soon as you express an interest in Business, your UC advisor will guide you in taking University Studies courses that are also required for admission to the Cameron School of Business (CSB). When you have at least 24 hours of earned credits, you can declare your “PRE-Business” major. Requirements to declare PRE-Business: Many students will declare “PRE-Business” as their major first. Students declare PRE-Business before they have met ALL of the admission criteria.
- Students can declare “PRE-Business” once they have earned 24 hours of credits at UNCW.- Declaring PRE-Business does not guarantee admission to the CSB, however, students who meet all admission

Advising Tips for after you declare Pre-Business: Run a Degree Audit (located in SeaNet). This is an excellent tool to help you analyze degree requirements. Your audit confirms the following information:
- Your major has been correctly recorded- The name of your new faculty advisor (Note: Advisors are manually assigned based on your concentration – there
may be a slight delay between declaration and advisor assignment)- Courses you have completed and courses you still need to fulfill for admission and graduation requirements.
Complete the CSB online orientation/admission application. - Do this immediately after the Registrar has recorded your PRE-Business major declaration regardless of
whether all admission requirements have been completed. Students who are in the process of completingrequirements will have an application status of “pending”. CSB Student Services will review pending applicationseach semester and will notify students as soon as they are accepted. To access the admission application, log intothe CSB Portal (accessible under “quick links” on the CSB web page), create a password, and click on theapplication link.
Where may I receive additional information about the Cameron School of Business and The Student Services Advising Center?
- Review the “Advising” link on the CSB website. On this site, you will find important information on Options(disciplines within Business) available to study, and Option worksheets which will outline specific courses youwill need to complete. Once you choose an option, you should use your Degree Audit to complete the worksheetand use it for future course planning.
- Your new Advising Center is Cameron Student Services; located in Cameron Hall room 121. Although you willhave advising appointments with your faculty advisor (who teaches in your Option of choice), the StudentServices Advising Center is available for you from 8-5 M-F. No appointments necessary. We can also be reachedat 910-962-3899.
