1300L The North Pole Was Here: Puzzles and Perils at the Top of the World REVKIN
In 1827, Parry undertook one of the rst expeditions specically aimed at reaching the North Pole. He fell far short, but by then had become a celebrity - the rst Arctic star but hardly the last. In the nineteenth century and the rst half of the twentieth century, those who sailed, hiked, sledded, or ew north were some of the world's most celebrated heroes. e isolation, mystery, and deadliness of this region added to the mystique surrounding those who survived their adventures here. e rst voyages north were mainly for practical reasons, to nd new northerly shipping routes from the Atlantic Ocean that would allow ships to reach the Pacic without sailing south around Africa or South America. But the brutal conditions made the trips into extraordinary tests of courage and endurance.
900L The Adventures of Nanny Piggins SPRATT
Brilliant ideas oen came to Nanny Piggins when she was asleep. To be strictly accurate, they came to her when she was awake, lying in bed with her eyes closed, not wanting to get up yet. Either way, bed was a place of creative genius for her. And so it happened on this particular day, as she snuggled beneath her comforter, that Nanny Piggins was struck with wonderful inspiration. She shook Derrick, Samantha, and Michael awake. All three of them were asleep on Nanny Piggins's bed because they enjoyed sleeping in too. And they knew Nanny Piggins's room was the only place their father would not harass them about it. Mr. Green never entered his nanny's room because (even though he would never admit it) he was slightly afraid of her. "Wake up!" cried Nanny Piggins. "We've got no time to waste."
400L Ghost Wolf BRADFORD
e others fell asleep right away, but Matt lay awake in the dark.ank goodness the camp was only for two weeks. If only they didn't have to go on a two-day tenting trip at the end. ey were going to paddle across lakes. ey were going to portage the canoes between the campsites. He was just a kid. How was he supposed to carry a canoe? en he sat up straight in his bunk again. Was that a howl in the distance? He stuck his head out into the room and listened. It came again. Was it a wolf ?
