Special Settings
Special SettingsAutomatic Tray Selection
The selection of paper in the 9045N printer follow certain rules in situations where the requestedand loaded media do not match.
If you ask for a specific tray, which has according to the paper menu the requested media typeassigned and tray linking is set to off, but there is no media loaded in that tray the job will not con-tinue until you load the tray with media. The printer will stop and advise that a certain type and sizeof paper needs to be put into the specified tray. If linking is on it will automatically go to anothertray with the correct size and type.
If you request a specific type of media to be loaded from a specific tray and that tray does not havethe required media type set in the media type loaded and tray linking is on, the printer will select thepaper from another tray with the correctly loaded paper.
If tray linking is off you have two choices:
If you change the media type of the requested tray in the paper menu to the correct type andpress start it will feed from that tray. It will also assume that the correct media type is nowloaded in the tray. The print speed may also be changed as required for that media type.
If you do not change the paper then it will feed from the default tray and assume the papertype assigned to that default tray in the paper menu when you press the start key.
To overcome possible conflicts the best setting to use for tray selection within the driver is oftenAuto-Sense.
Paper Size
When making selections for a print job, Auto-Sense will not work with the following paper sizes:
Statement COM10
Monarch
A6
C5
DL
To use these sizes you must use the operator panel on the printer to turn off Auto-Sense for thetray and set the intended paper size.

Setting Custom Paper Sizes
To print on custom size paper loaded in trays 1 to 4, you must set the paper size on the controlpanel. You may also need to set it on the printer driver, depending on the paper size. This sectionexplains how to set the size on the control panel.

automatically detect the size and orientation of the loaded paper.
1. Press the button to display the Menu screen.

image quality cannot be processed accurately. Toner may not fuse properly on the paper, resulting in dirty and poor quality printouts.
Changes in paper type settings on the printer driver are not reflected in this printer.

Using the FLASH or Hard Disk Option as a PostScript Device
In order to allow PostScript programs to access the FLASH and/or hard disk options, a full imple-mentation of a PostScript storage device is provided. This section discusses an overview of the
PostScript operators and parameter sets that are included in the support.
For detailed information on using the operators/parameter sets, please refer to the following publi-cations:
PostScript Language Reference Manual
Adobe PostScript 3 Version 3010 Product Supplement
Device Names and Priority
The device names assigned to the FLASH and hard disk options are as follows:
If both devices are installed, both devices can be referenced uniquely by name. If no device name isspecified in the PostScript operation, the SearchOrderparameter in the device parameter set estab-lishes the priority for file operations. When both devices are installed, the SearchOrdervalue for thehard disk is set to 1, while the SearchOrdervalue for the FLASH is set to 2. This gives priority to thehard disk.
PostScript Operators
All of the standard file-object related operators (file, read, write, etc.) are supported. In addition, following is a list of device-related PostScript Compatibility operators that are supported for use
with the FLASH (%flash%) or hard disk (%disk0%) options: devdismount
devforall
devformat
devmount
devstatus
diskonline

Device Parameter Sets
When installed, a device parameter set will be supported for either or both FLASH and hard diskoptions. The parameter sets can be referenced using the device names%flash% or%disk0%. Eachparameter set will include the following parameters:
LogicalSize
Writeable
BlockSize
Searchable
SearchOrder

Warmstart.ps and Sys/Start Files
When either or both the FLASH or hard disk options are installed, there are two features whichprovide support for automatic execution of a PostScript program during power-on initialization.
The first feature is the warmstart.psfile. Each time the printer is powered on, either or both optionalstorage devices will be checked for a file named warmstart.ps. If this file is found, it will be read andparsed by the PostScript interpreter. It is up to the PostScript programmer to create the content ofthis file and get the file onto the storage device using the PostScript device and file operators.
The second feature is the Sys/Startfile. If either or both of the optional storage devices areinstalled, an additional parameter will be supported in the System Parameter set. This parameter isan integer parameter called StartupModeand is set to 1 by default.
NOTE: This parameter can be read or written using the dosysstartand setdosysstartoperators.
Each time the printer is powered on, if the StartupMode parameter is set to 1, either or both theoptional storage devices will be searched for a file called Sys/Start, a file named Startin a path calledSys. If this file is found, it will be read and parsed by the PostScript interpreter. Again, it is up to thePostScript programmer to create the content of this file and get the file onto the storage deviceusing the PostScript device and file operators.

Using the Power-On Files Feature
Using the Power-On Files Feature
Power-on Files Defined
If a FLASH Card or hard disk drive is installed in your printer, your printer has the capability ofstoring additional power-on files which can be read and interpreted at power-on. Power-on files are
processed at power-on initialization only and not at the start of every print.
Power-on files can contain either PCL or PostScript language content. Examples of power-on filesinclude soft fonts, and macro/overlay definitions.
