UChicagoPromiseUChicago Promise is the University o Chicagos pledge to help increase college access and readiness or
Chicago high school students. It marks a strong investment in the Universitys long-standing commitment
to providing opportunities or Chicagos students, oering additional resources and support or thoseinterested in attending the University o Chicago or other selective, liberal arts colleges.
Research by the University o Chicago Consortium on Chicago School Research shows that many students
are not aiming high enough when it comes to college. A 2008 study o Chicago Public Schools graduates
ound that only 27 percent o students who qualied to attend a selective college enrolled in a selective
college, and only 38 percent o students qualied to attend a very selective college enrolled in a very
selective college. Many high school students are daunted by the college admissions and nancial aid
processes and may not get the support they need. We must do betterand we will.
UChicago Promise includes the ollowing:GRADUATE DEBTFREEPLEDGE
Chicago residents who
attend high school in
Chicago and are admitted
to the University o Chicago
can attend the University
without receiving any
loans in their nancial aid
packages. These student
loans will be replaced by
grants, which do not have
to be repaid.
APPLICATION FEEWAIVER
Chicago residents who
attend high school in
Chicago will have the
$75 application ee
automatically waived when
applying to the University
o Chicago.
ADMISSIONSACADEMY
The Admissions Academy
will support and train
educators by providing
proessional development
and other assistance. It
will also provide resources
and inormation to guide
students and amilies
through the college
admissions and nancial
aid processeswhether
they are applying to
UChicago or any other
selective our-year college.
MENTORING ANDPREPARATION
The University o Chicago
will extend its Metcal
Internship Program to und
12 internships to support
the new Admissions
Academy. In coordination
with proessional sta rom
the Admissions Ofce, the
UChicago Promise Metcal
Interns will be responsible
or launching the academy
and, in a later stage o the
program, be assigned to
select high school guidance
counselors to help coach
students. The internships
will begin during the 201213
academic year.

students get the best chance at an excellent education. These include:
University Engagement in K12 Education
Urban Education InstituteThe University of Chicago Urban Education Institute is dedicated to creating knowledge to produce reliably excellent
schooling for children growing up in urban America. UEI operates the four campuses of the University of Chicago Charter
School, serving approximately 1,700 students on the South Side of Chicago; prepares outstanding urban teachers and leaders
through the Urban Teacher Education Program; undertakes rigorous research to improve policy and practice, anchored by
the Consortium on Chicago School Research; and provides tools, analytics, and training to improve schools nationwide.
Full-Tuition, Merit-Based Scholarships
n Chicago Public Schools Scholarships: The University o
Chicago awards ull-tuition, our-year scholarships to a select
number o graduates o Chicago Public Schools (CPS) who
are admitted to the College. Awards are made to outstanding
students who show the greatest potential or making
contributions to the academic, extracurricular, and community
lie o the College.
n Chicago Police and Fire Scholarships: In honor o the Chicago
Fire and Police Departments service to the University
community and the city, the University o Chicago has
oered ull-tuition scholarships or more than 30 years to
select admitted children o active, sworn Chicago reghters
and police ofcers. Students whose parent lost his or her lie
in the line o duty are also eligible to apply.
n Individual Chicago High School Scholarships: The University o
Chicago oers ull-tuition scholarships to qualied students
rom the ollowing high schools: Kenwood Academy, Providence
St. Mel, Nicholas Senn, and the University o Chicago Charter
SchoolWoodlawn Campus.
Civic and Community Engagement
University Community Service Center: The University
Community Service Center provides UChicago students with
volunteer opportunities through more than 70 community
servicebased organizations, including 22 that ocus on K12
education or partner with Chicago Public Schools. The UCSC
advises the student-led organizationswhich contribute
more than 20,000 volunteer hours annuallyand helps them
cultivate productive, respectul, and sustainable working
relationships with community organizations and leaders.
Neighborhood Schools Program: The Neighborhood Schools
Program (NSP) connects University o Chicago students with
schools, public service ofces, and local community organizations.
NSP, ounded more than 30 years ago, matches 350 undergraduate
and graduate students to 50 sites within South Side communities.
Together, these students provide more than 35,000 hours o support
each year. Students work as teaching assistants, technology
assistants, administrative interns, and general support sta.
College Prep Initiatives
College Bridge Program: The College Bridge Program enables
advanced CPS students who have completed all their schools
requirements in a given area to enroll in rigorous course work at
the University o Chicago with tuition, ees, and textbooks ully
unded by the University. The program is open to rising juniors
and seniors, and serves 15 students during the academic year
and 30 students during the summer.
Collegiate Scholars Program: The University o Chicago
Collegiate Scholars Program, which has 294 alumni attending
94 colleges in 30 states, was ounded in 2003 as a three-year
program that aims to prepare talented CPS students in
grades 1012 or admission and success at the nations top
colleges and universities. The Collegiate Scholars Program
is shaped around a core curriculum o humanities, social
science, math, and science courses during the summer
months and enrichment activities geared toward college
readiness, cultural awareness, and civic engagement during
the academic year. The Collegiate Scholars come rom 45
public schools in Chicago.
Upward Bound/Ofce o Special Programs: The University
o Chicago is home to the nations rst Upward Bound college
readiness program. The program is ederally unded, and many
prominent Chicagoans have completed the program beore
going on to successul college and proessional careers. It
includes Saturday School, ater-school tutoring during the week,
a robust summer program, college tours, and a host o other
programs aimed to prepare Chicago high school students or
collegiate study.
