HOMECOMING AT UA, #2 BAMA WELCOMES ARKANSAS STATE REDWOLVES
GIBLER SEES RUSSIAN BEARS IN AMERICA’S FUTURE

- Mike Woodard Bama held it’s #2 ranking by defeating a dejected Ten-nessee team in Knoxville last weekend. I was
there and there are a couple of things I’d like to share with those who watched on television. Pre-game when the members of the teams were announced, the last name announced for Tennessee was “Head Coach Phillip Fulmer”...and the Tennessee fans booed! After the game we went by a local grocery store that had “Fire Fulmer Now” posters at the check out counters. By the end of the third quarter most Vols fans were already out of the stadium. They’d had enough. Now, that’s some angry fans! Bama, for the first time this season, showed they could play in the second half. It was certainly a good sight to see. Johnson proved he was the greatest freshman player in the BCS with super catches, and our defense continued it’s impressive stopping power. The Tennes-see defense played up to their revenues, up until their offense left them on the field too long and they visibly began to
tire. No defense can play the whole game without wearing out. It’s just more stressful on the stopping side than the attacking side. Now, you’d think that a homecoming game against Arkansas State would be a shoo in win for Bama...but I hope the team doesn’t think this. On any given Saturday anything can happen...if you let your guard down. This is no time for Bama to assume anything. But, I expect Bama to have a nice day of it...supposed to be a nice 70 degree high sunny day. Welcome to our returning alumni and visitors from Arky State. I don’t want the team to look forward to next week, but I sure can. LSU...well, I’m going to be there too! Thanks to my good friend Tony Onelion of the Bar-gain’s Plus, a weekly newspaper in Lou-isiana, who called to see if I’d go to the game with him...OK, the tickets are free, on the 40 yard line and I’ll stay at Tony’s place...so, he had to twist my arm...NOT! LSU has seen some troubles this year. The last installment of disaster for LSU was Georgia, who scored 52 points on them last weekend. Tony, a LSU fan, says the team has no leadership as it did last year. And he says their quarterback is as predictable as the sun, telegraphing
where he’s plan-ning to past every time. No Alabama player can read this article from this point forward! I hate to plan so far ahead, but...if we beat LSU, who I consider our greatest obstacle to the SEC Cham-pionship...then the outcome of this weekends Florida VS Georgia game becomes critical as to who we would meet there. As long as the polls don’t decide Penn State should be #2 instead of Alabama...we could be in for a Texas VS Alabama championship game. However, I expect Florida to beat Georigia and be against us in that SEC Championship game, if we make it past these last four games. In a Florida VS Alabama SEC Championship game Ala-bama would have it’s hands full. Tee Bow can run or pass, and he has lot’s of sticky handed receivers. Hey, let’s enjoy our beautiful winning season however it works out. My pick: Bama 35 Arky State 10.
—Mike Woodard Listening to University Po-litical Science Professor Doug Gibler reminds me of an old joke: “I have good news, and I have bad news”. The bad news is the Russians (Da Bears) are re-emerging as an adversary for the United States...and we will probably enter a new “cold war” era with them. The good news is, the Bear is not near as strong militarily as it once was. The “Bear” came out of hi-bernation with the Georgian conflict. (not the Alabama Geor-gia game) Georgia is a little mountainous nation north of Turkey and south of Russia. The US has been trying to get Geor-gia to join NATO, which would require the US and many Euro-pean nations to defend it if Rus-sia decides it wishes to overtake the nation, and Russia is non to happy about that.
A big reason the Russia’s don’t want to lose control over Georgia is that a big pipeline of natural gas flows through Geor-gia and Russia makes a lot of money off of it. Another is that Russia’s pride and ego have been damaged over the past years. Their system of govern-ment collapsed and was proven “wrong” and they feel bad about that. A little saber rattling, fighting against the US might just stir a little national pride which has been lost. Gibler makes a disturbing analysis which interlaces Euro-pean need for natural gas from that pipeline, which makes them dependent on Russia for heat and energy, an aggressive US policy to defend and protect (along with insulting Russia a little more) the once Soviet States turned democracies, and these individual states acting up
(posturing) against Russia thinking the US back them up. A key ingredient to this whole mix mash is that the United States military is spread thin trying to conduct two wars at once, one in Afghanistan and another in Iraq. The US, accord-ing to Gibler, simply no longer has uncommitted troops to send to Georgia, or anywhere else, to put on a third war. The Russia’s, seeing this, think they can act up and sound strong again...even though their mili-tary might is very suspect since the break up of the Soviet States. However, the Russia’s has made tons of money off of the energy crisis as they have huge reserves of natural gas and oil, which they’ve been selling. Will the Bear dig up the old cold war against America? Will America continue to provoke Russia or Iran with ill timed
affronts? Well, you’ll need to talk with Doug Gibler on that. I just hope the old Bear will go back into hibernation and leave us all alone.
REMEMBER TO VOTE ON NOVEMBER
4TH! -Mike Woodard Uncle Sam wants you to VOTE. It’s your patri-otic duty! And it doesn’t matter which candidate you vote for. It’s your right, so exercise it. No-vember 4th is election day. Obama or McCain, Biden or Palin...just as long as you consider your choice, and vote your convictions, you’ve done your duty as a citizen! Congratulations. Take it from an old voter….soon as the elec-tion is over the two candi-dates will wish each other well. The winner will be humble toward the loser and say they ran a good race. The loser will pledge his support for the winner to help them make American a better place. When we vote, we all make America a better nation.
University of Alabama Political Science Professor Doug Gilber shares his opinions on a re-emerging Russia.

EDITOR’S COMMENTS…
Tuscaloosa’s
7-Day Forecast
OCT. 31—
NOV. 6
This Week’s Local Forecast Weather Trivia
Tuscaloosa is insulated, to some extent, from the economic mal-aise which is striking the nation. We’ve seen some layoffs, some cut backs, and some short hours...but nothing like the hardest hit areas of the nation. Tuscaloosa’s economy is diversified and has good underlying fundamentals. Yet, as the economy nationally slows, Tuscaloosa will see more troubles. However, your valiant reporter foresees three immediate eco-nomic stimulators. One, lower fuel prices. Two, banks easing credit. Three, more federal government stimulation. The first one represents a grand opportunity for the nation. Tar-iffs on imported oil right now...despite the economic conditions, would entice domestic production. If we don’t do this right now, when the op-portunity exists, we’ll easily fall back into wasteful use of an imported commodity. America simply must create jobs in America creating do-mestic energy. We can’t let the foreign nations get another crack at up-setting, perhaps even destroying our economy again. Now, I’m not advo-cating tariffs to take away all savings that American people can get from lower gas prices...we just can not forget where that oil is coming from and what it did to us over the past year. We certainly don’t need a short memory now! The second coming stimulus is that the government’s bank bail out program is now about to kick in. Banks will now lend between each other again (they had gotten too scared to do that) and instead of folks needing a 900 credit score to get a loan...folks with a 680 are going to find themselves approved again. Yes, they’ll want a down payment, yes, they’ll want collateral, but...there’s another yes….your loan will be ap-proved. Car dealers and mortgage companies will find out what I’m writing too here starting in the month of November. It’s a shame to say it about people, and I don’t mean to compare them with a bunch of cows or buffalo...but people move in herds. Bad news will get people spooked like a Halloween costume. But, as news turns the other way, as it inevitably will, people will hear good things and spending will increase. There are some who will have lost their jobs...and that’s mighty tough. Their hope is that people will resume spending and that they’ll be recalled. The people who kept their jobs, kept having income coming in, and who stopped spending for a while did not stop wanting. They’ll have kept driving their cars, wearing them out, sleeping on their beds (tossing and turning) and wearing them out, etc. The people who saved some money, and who will start feeling more confident about the future, will start spending some of it...and that will, before too long, get some of those laid off people back to work. The others, who won’t get called back to work...well, there’s where domestic energy production comes in. We have GOT to put peo-ple to work creating energy at home. That means producing electric wind turbines, hydro generators, solar panels, gas and oil production, nuclear power….all these can put America back to work, the economy back on solid footing, and the herd will stop running and get back to working. But, only with that tariff to prevent OPEC from pulling the rug out from under them!!! Without that, nobody in their right mind would invest in it. America is supposed to be a fearless nation. I believe in the American economic system. Our government needs to get real smart. It’s going to work. With the right leadership, we’ve got a great future. Mike Woodard, Publisher Tuscaloosa Sun

When babies can’t sleep, the whole family is miserable. The other kids in the family are tired because they too can’t sleep with all the racket the baby is making and the parents are ex-hausted from being awake the whole night with the baby. Babies who have sleeping problems cannot fall asleep easily and are usu-ally awake in the middle of the night. Sleep patterns in babies also take some time to develop so it can be pretty difficult to say whether your child’s sleeping habits are abnormal. Newborns need to have atleast 16 hours of sleep in a day, but this can be one to two hours at a time, depending on the baby. Most babies do not develop normal sleeping patterns until the 4th or 6th month. A baby’s sleeping problem develops when parents react too quickly when the child cries. Most new parents do not know that when left alone for a while, babies may stop crying and fall asleep by herself. When parents react immediately to the first cry, babies get used to being comforted and will soon expect to get attention immediately. To prevent your babies from developing sleeping problems, parents need to make sure that they are well rested so they can cope with their baby’s situation. A technique used in our family is that my husband and I alternate getting up for the baby so that at least one of us is well rested. Here are some other tips that parents can do to help babies fall asleep easier and stay sleeping longer. 1. Avoid too much stimulation at night. Try not to play with your baby before going to sleep. 2. Try not to let baby to sleep too long in the morning. Some par-ents try to wake their babies at 3pm so the baby can fall asleep at night. 3. Put your baby to bed immediately as soon as she is tired. This way, she can learn to relax. 4. Rocking your baby to sleep creates a habit. Soon your baby will need to be held and comforted back to sleep when she wakes in the middle of the night. 5. Avoid putting your baby to sleep with a pacifier. A pacifier is used to soothe the baby but she should not sleep with it.} 6. Do not put the baby to sleep in your bed. Several studies have shown higher incidence of crib death in babies sleeping with their parents, this can also create sleeping problems. It is best to encourage your baby to sleep on her own, espe-cially when she reaches her third month. When your baby is already drowsy, lay her down on a designated sleeping area. Try to put her down when she’s awake while feeling cozy and loved and she will begin to associate this with falling asleep and she will soon get the hang of sleeping on her own. Some parents believe that their babies should be allowed to “cry it out”, allowing babies to cry themselves to sleep. Studies sug-gest, however, that this shouldn’t be used with children below six months of age.

A lot of people go to a lot of efforts in hiding their under-eye dark circles and eye bags with a lot of makeup. Despite one's best efforts, however, these skin imperfections are still very much visible. In fact, people with raccoon and puffy eyes often look haggard, stressed or downright older than they really are. But aside from buying the best concealer, highlighter, foundation and other makeup, you can also look at the problem from a different angle. Maybe you need to understand what are causing these problems so that you can find a better way of dealing with the issue. | Basically, eye bags are formed when the muscles found underneath your upper and lower eyelids become less elastic. When this happens, the fat underneath your skin starts to stick out or protrude. On the other hand, dark circles usually develop when the veins on the surface of the skin appear visible. Here are the most common underlying reasons for your eye woes. Allergies And Asthma: Whenever you have asthma attack or allergies, there is a tendency for you to rub your eyes. Anything that actually contributes to your urge to rub the sensitive area around the eyes can cause skin discoloration or dark circles. Although rare, those who have eczema may suffer from what is called Dennis Lines or conspicuous red lines under the eyes. Diet: Many people do not realize that what they eat or do not eat can actually affect not only their health, but their appearance as well. Those who do not get enough vitamins, minerals and antioxidants in their diet may experience raccoon eyes. For people who like salty foods, eye bags may form because of water retention brought about by a high-sodium diet. Also, drinking too much alcohol can surely give you puffy eyes the following day. Genes: People who were born with darker skin tones are more susceptible to getting dark circles because they produce more melanocytes, cells that are responsible for producing pigments. If you have parents, siblings, and relatives that have dark eye circles, there is a high probability that you will have them too, especially if you do not take precautionary measures to prevent them from developing. Environmental Factors: Environmental toxins and the rays of the sun are very harmful to your skin, especially to the area near your eyes. Thus, if you are not the type of person who wears shades or uses sun block, then you will be likely to suffer often from raccoon eyes. Sleep Deprivation And Fatigue: Your skin turns pale when you are very tired or when you do not get enough sleep. When this happens, your skin discoloration, especially under your eyes, becomes more pronounced and visible. Blood Circulation Problems: One primary cause of discoloration of the skin underneath the eyes is poor blood circulation. As you know, the blood that passes through the blood vessels near your eyes has a bluish tint. If you have circulatory problems, the veins will be more pronounced. The color of your under eye circles can even be darker if the blood and other fluids leak out from the blood vessels. Age: You must accept the fact that as you age, the skin underneath your pearly orbs will start to thin, which will make blood vessels beneath the skin become visible. If you do not start using eye products now, there will be a big chance that these eye problems will become more permanent. Since the areas around the eyes are ultra-sensitive, it would really be advisable for you to use eye creams or gels regularly.

Herbs and vegetables. Strange as it may sound, it’s a good time to plant some things for next summer. Garlic planted now will be ready late next summer. Plant in a sunny well drained area. Place bulbs 2 inches apart. Chives, dill and parsley can be planted now...if extreme cold weather sets in cover them, but most cold days they’ll be find. If you planted last year you’ll find the greatest flavor is in harvest-ing at this time this year! If you’ve still got tomatoes, egg plants, or peppers growing, listen for the frost warnings and cover them or you’ll lose them. If you have cucumbers, okra, or summer squash still growing, don’t cover them for a frost warning...go ahead and harvest them. Also, if you have sweet potatoes, gourds, pumpkins, go ahead and harvest them before the first killing frost too. It’s time to think about indoor growing too. This is best accom-plished if you have a green house or sun room. Smaller plants can be grown in smaller pots, but larger varieties will take up more space. Greenhouses will grow better because you’ll get more and overhead sunlight to your plants. All sorts of herbs can be grown indoors year round.

The TV blares at my house: the economy is bad, the stock market it down, houses are worth less, ugly statements and barbs are thrown between the two political parties, retirement funds are….OK, you got the picture. And it ain’t purdy! So, I’ve figured out what the problem is. We all need to turn our television sets off and talk to each other. Let’s talk about what’s really important. Does junior needs some help with his math home-work? Is Sally feeling insecure at school? Maybe we need to sit down at the dinner table, share our evening meals, and just enjoy each others company for a while each evening with the squawk box off. If things are going tough at work...well, you’ll sure do a lot better job if you aren’t worried about things. My grandfather said worrying was like rocking in a chair...you’re moving all the time but you aren’t getting anywhere. The television is a worrying devise. It sits there telling you to be worried every time you turn it on. Turn it off. Enough! You’ll soon find yourself smiling more. Relaxing more. Enjoy-ing this wonderful life and the times you have. You’ll spend more time relating with others. Have a get together with family and friends. Cook out. Tell a joke or two. Reminisce about the best or funniest things that have happened in your life. Spend quality time together, talk about the good ole days, and before long...you’ll have made some more of them. I don’t think I want to become completely removed from the goings on in the world, or my country, or my state. But I sure want a lot less interference from it in my pursuit of happiness. That’s a right we have as American’s. We should make sure we exercise that right often. In the final analysis, we deal with what life throws at us one way or the other. We don’t need the whole world to come into our house, or our family, or our life, every day! Just on occasion is al-right. Try my solution to your personal troubles. Turn off the TV. Give it a month and see how you feel. I’d be willing to bet 99% of you will feel ten times better about yourself and your life after one month. OK, OK...I know. I’m not talkin’ about Bama games. After all, when we’re behind by 3, in the 4th quarter, with one minute to go...now that is relaxing! Nobody worries then huh?

With Mike Woodard
Atlanta saw Carl Edwards improve his standings, first by winning, then by an increase in his cup points. But, right there is his rear view mirror was….Jimmy John-son, the cup points leader, who came in second behind him. Jimmy is still the hands on favorite to win with this impres-sive number two finish. This Sunday at 3 pm the tri-oval 1/5 mile Texas Motor Speedway host the Dickies 500. This track is very similar to Atlanta in shape and size. It’s a fast track, not like Talladega or Daytona, but fast nev-ertheless. Jimmy is sure to post and run well again and I think the numbers are run-ning out on anybody else taking the cup away from him. It’s still a statistical possi-bility however...so gentle start your engines.
Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle, and Jeff Burton still have hopes...and because he’s moved into second in the cup standings Carl has the edge for anyone who could displace Johnson. Kyle Busch, the media darling of the pre cup series, finally made a semi-comeback arriving in 5th place. Earnhart hit 11th and Denny Hamlin pulled a Toyota back into the hunt at 3rd. Five Fords ran in top ten posi-tions, including the winner. Jeff Gordan and Jimmy Johnson were the only two Chevy’s in the hunt. Texas is always a great spectators track. They say everything is bigger in Texas...well, not compared to Ala-bama...just look at Dega...I rest my case.
Auburn is going to find themselves with their hands full this weekend in Oxford against Ole Miss. That team is TOUGH, both sides of the ball. I do believe this is a year that Ole Miss will come out on top. Saban said that Ole Miss is a team that could easily be un-defeated this season. After watching them play Alabama, I’m a believer! Auburn is just too weak on the offensive side of the ball to move against this Ole Miss defense. Auburn’s only hope is their defense, which
proved against Miss State that they can hold a team scoreless. Yet, Virginia showed that Auburn’s defense has holes. Defenses that hold opponents scoreless usually don’t have to be on the field practically the whole game though...and after all the 3 and outs Ole Miss will put Auburn through, that isn’t going to be the case in this game. I pick Ole Miss to win...and the Tigers to start searching the stars above for an offense. Rebels 27—Tigers 10.
DICKIES 500 IN TEXAS FOR NASCAR THIS SUNDAY
AUBURN STILL HAS NO OFFENSE, TO MEET OLE MISS
Q: Which Alabama player set the record for the most number of touchdowns in one year?
A: Shawn Alexander, 24 touchdowns, 19 rushing, 4 receiving, 1 kick-off return, in 1999.

My hunting plans this year was to put some meat in the freezer while waiting on the big bucks to show themselves during the rut. I have been able to do that, even though there’s still room for another one. The pressure really subsides after that first arrow finds its mark. It’s like catching a limit of fish in a tournament and spending the rest of the day culling the small ones. While I’m waiting on the rut, I like to try my hand at spotting and stalking. This is a fun way to hunt even though the success rate is very low. To ambush a deer and make a good shot on him with a bow, is almost like a new hunting sport. It takes a whole lot of patience, plan-ning, and Godspeed. I have to admit that I’ve hunted this way four or five times this year without success, but I have gotten real close. On one such episode I drew on small buck that was only five yards away, thinking that it was a doe. I’m glad I didn’t release that arrow too soon. As difficult as this style of hunting is for deer, it’s multiplied for turkey. But hunting is a weird sport where weird things happen at weird times. Last week was one of those weird moments where I was not only able to set up on a flock of turkeys, but was able to shoot at three differ-ent birds until I finally hit one. I have no idea how something like that could happen, but that’s hunting. And that’s what makes it fun. Forrest Gump once stated, “My momma said, Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” Forrest and his momma were right. And I’m glad that life is that way. This would be a pretty boring place if everyday was the same and everything happened as we expected. Most of the time we gripe when things don’t go our way, as if our way is the standard. We somehow think that God is under obligation to give us ample warning when our schedules are “adjusted.” However, the comfort that we ought to find is not in living a life that has no surprises, but in knowing that our Father is never surprised and will never be caught off guard by any event in our life. If the One we have our trust in is certain and steadfast, the rest of our life doesn’t have to be.
