Partners share in software success

A SIMPLE software rosteringprogram written for his employerwas the beginning of a business,WageLoch, for Lachlan Sedsman.

Mr Sedsman was workingpart-time at a bakery when hisboss was having difficulty gettingthe staff roster together on time.

Seeing an opportunity, MrSedsman wrote a basic softwareprogram which was then sharedwith Chris Burke, the director ofAdelaide payroll company, Wag-elink.

“So began a partnership be-tween myself and Chris that hasnow been successful for almost10 years,” Mr Sedsman says.

“We have serviced more than1000 clients Australia-wideacross many different industriesincluding pharmacy, medicalchild care, aged care, retail, hos-pitality and manufacturing.”

Mr Sedsman attributes thesuccess of the software to its easeof use. “The software found aniche market in SME businessowners, many of them with lim-ited computer literacy,” he says.

“That in itself can be a difficultchallenge to overcome at times –persuading business owners thatit can take surprisingly little ef-fort or financial outlay to replacetraditional paper-based systems,and that it can assist them tobudget and control their labourcosts.

“This is particularly appealingin an environment where labourcosts generally account for a dis-proportionately large amount ofan SME’s running costs.”

The software was developed

over several years by workingwith small businesses, industrybodies, payroll companies, acc-ountants and bookkeepers.

“The continued success of thesoftware owes much to beingable to listen to the needs andfeedback of the clients,” Mr Seds-man adds. “WageLoch recognisesthat every business and every in-dustry is unique.

“ Having methods for adaptingthe product to suit individual cli-

ents can be time-consuming, buthas been rewarding in establish-ing strong and lasting relation-ships with clients.”

WageLoch can be integratedwith other programs such asMYOB, Xero, Reckon and point-of-sale systems.

“The introduction of afford-able fingerprint-scanner techno-logy for staff clock-on provided asignificant boost to the uptake ofthe software and subsequentcompany growth,” he says.

“Employees also have the abil-ity to clock on and off with RFID(radio frequency identification)key fobs, PIN codes, mobilephones, iris scanners and facialrecognition.”

The company continues towork on ways to modify and im-prove the software. Mr Sedsmansays WageLoch prides itself onits team.

“WageLoch has worked hardto foster an inclusive family envi-ronment within the workplace,where employees form an inte-gral part of the business,” hesays.

“In the same way the growthand development of the softwarecomes from listening to the feed-back from clients, the businesshas also grown by listening to itsteam.”

WageLoch was this year a fi-nalist in the BrandSA and BDOFast Movers’ Awards.
