Welcome to Second Grade!
• I will introduce you to second grade and to our classroom expectations and procedures.

• My background– I have lived in Indianola, MS 41 years. – I attended Grand Canyon University and
now enrolled in Belhaven University in Jackson, MS.
• My experience– I’ve been a teacher assistant for 7
years but this is my first year lead teacher.

My Goals
• To give you the academic and social skills you need to progress to third grade.
• To provide a supportive and fun classroom environment.
• To help you make new friends and discover new interests.
Attendance Policy• Students need to attend school
everyday if possible. When a student has more than five (5) unexcused absences, he or she is reported to the Compulsory Attendance Office. Good attendance and promptness to class are extremely important matters.
Tardiness
• Breakfast begins at 7:00-7:45 a.m.
• Class begins at 8:00 a.m.
• Morning work is assigned each day. If you are late, this will be assigned for homework.
• If you aren’t in the classroom by the time the bell rings, please check in at the school office before coming to class. After three (3) tardiness to class, student will be referred for conference with the principal and/or parent.
Classroom Rules
Respect and be kind to others.
Listen carefully to directions, and obey them.
Do not touch others.
Work quietly.
Work and play safely.
Raise your hand before you ask a question.
Listen quietly while others are speaking.
Do not bring toys or gum to class.
Hall Rules Obey all our school rules.
Respect our school’s property.
Be quiet in lines, hallways, and restrooms.
Walk only, no running.
Stay in line, and stay on the right side of the hall.
Always have a hall pass.
Lunchtime Rules Stand in line and wait your turn to
be served.
Don’t play with or throw your food.
Clean your table before you leave.
Walk only, no running.
Don’t take food out of the cafeteria.
Dress Code
Uniform Policy
• Hunter green polo shirts
• Khaki or navy pants, shorts, skirts, or jumpers
• Solid white undershirt is required to wear under shirt
• Black or brown belt
• Jacket with a zipper
Uniform Policy
• No sagging pants
• Tops can not show mid-section
• No caps or hat allowed to be worn in the building
• No flip-flops
• Shirts need to be tucked in pants at all time
Classroom Community
• Our classroom is a community. In our community, we have rules to help us get along with each other.
• Our basic class rules are:– Be respectful and responsible.
– Be organized and follow directions.
– Be on time.
– Be prepared.
Classroom Expectation• Be in your assigned
seat and ready to work.
• Bring required books and materials to class every day.
• Listen and stay seated when someone is speaking.
• Follow directions the first time they are given.
• Turn assignments in on time
• Treat everyone and their property respectfully.
• Student should not eat or drink in class unless you have permission.

Homework• You are responsible for completing your homework
each night.
• Homework is always copied in your planner.
• I will assign about 45 minutes of homework every night. This should include 20 minutes of reading.
• Your homework is due every morning.
• If homework is not completed, you will work on it at recess. This will also be marked on your discipline card and a note may be written in your planner.
• Homework is never given on Fridays.

Reading Curriculum• Monday: review vocabulary
words• Tuesday: read and discuss
story• Wednesday: phonics skills are
taught• Thursday: reading skills are
taught• Friday: test day, introduce
vocabulary words for next week
AR is a program designed to encourage you to read. I
ask that you read 20 minutes every night. This will
certainly improve your reading fluency, so you may
become an excellent reader.
Math Curriculum• You will learn about numbers
and operations, measurement, data, multiplication, division, and geometry.
• You must read the problem, draw a picture, write a complete number sentence, and always finish with a label.
• You will be time and tested weekly on multiplication facts.
Language/Spelling Curriculum
• You will learn about type and part of sentences.
• You will learn about nouns, verbs, pronouns, and adjectives.
• Spelling words are written in the students planner on Friday. Test are always given on Thursday.
• We begin the year with 15 words and 2 dictation sentences. Later in the year, the list will increase to 20 words.
Science Curriculum
• We will study matter, sound, light, electricity, plants, animals, the earth, and then weather.
• You are encouraged to bring things from home, which relate to the topics we are discussing.
Social Studies Curriculum
• We will learn about communities, history, geography, map skills, government, citizenship, economics, and different cultures from around our world.
