TREEN TOPICS March 2013
Finger Jointing Workshop
This was held at the shed under the tutelage of Gordon who has
devised a simple way of setting up a router table to make these joints. This
method requires two routers although it can be done with one. However you
will spend a lot of time setting up for the different cuts if only one is used.
Variations in the size of the fingers and of the space between them can be
achieved by using different size router cutters and by moving the position of
the cutter in relation to the fence. Once the setup is done and tested to ensure
that the joint fits well, cutting a joint does not take much time at all. Each of
the participants in the workshop took home a small box which had been
completed on the day.
While on the subject of Saturday workshops, a condition of attending is
that you make a small contribution to cover costs such as power, consumables
etc which the club has to pay. If you remain for lunch the cost is $10 and if
you leave before lunch you still need to pay $5. There have been occasions
when the money collected has not equated to the numbers there. Please ensure
that you put your money in the tin when you sign the book.
Vale Dianne Jackson
Members were saddened to hear that Dianne, wife of well known
member Peter Jackson, passed away in February. We have not seen much of
Peter over the last year or so because he has been fully occupied giving
Dianne his full support over the course of her protracted illness. They were a
devoted couple so Peter is understandably doing it tough at the moment. It is
good to see him involving himself in club activities and keeping busy. A good
representation of club members and their wives at the funeral indicated the
high regard in which the Jacksons are held.
The New Shed
As President Greg will probably mention in his Ramblings column,
the development application for the new shed at the showground site has
finally been approved and the combined committee have a $60,000 grant
with which to build it. I doubt that there would ever be enough room but
it is the opportunity to optimise the space that will be available and to set
up a good workshop to serve the mens shed and us for the foreseeable
future. Thanks to the work of the dedicated committee we will have a
good facility by the end of the year where we can go and perform tasks
that we are not able to do with limited equipment at home. If you have
any ideas or suggestions talk to one of our representatives on the
committee.
Snippets
Thanks to everyone who supported the Bunnings barbeque so well
in March but we will need lots of assistance again for our second and last
(?) one for the year on Sunday 14th April. With the new shed pending we
need all of the money we can get. A sheet calling for volunteers will be
passed around at this meeting.
At the March meeting Peter Jackson will be talking about
woodturning tools. As turners know, there is more to it than just a lathe
and a few chisels. Other aspects include various types of chucks,
sharpening equipment, face plates etc etc. Knowing Peter, there is a
chance that he will be suggesting ways of fashioning some of them
yourself.
No date has been set yet but Kiama member Robert Jolliffe has
offered to run a workshop on end grain turning sometime this year. Keep
an eye on the forthcoming program for a definite date later on.
Another one to look forward to is a full safety briefing at the May
meeting. This type of training and it’s regular revision is essential for
everyone wanting to use the machines at the shed.

Another of Jim’s popular sharpening workshops will be held on
Saturday 23rd March and the sheet for intending participants will do the
rounds at this meeting. Be in it.
Tuesday Night Workshop
I paid a visit to the Tuesday night workshop to see how they were
progressing with the wall hung tool chests which is their current project.
None of them have yet got to any advanced stage but there is a lot of
preliminary work to be done before they begin any assembly. There were
nine people there, all very busy doing various processes on the different
machines. Jim was working on the router table top, while others were
planing timber, using the thicknesser and cutting dovetail joints with the
gifkins jig. The plans allow each person to customise their own chest to suit
their individual requirements. I would be confident that there will be some
impressive tool chests to be seen at the exhibition in October. A few of the
activities can be seen in the accompanying photos.

Laguna 14” SUV Bandsaw.
I was looking for a new bandsaw and then I saw an ad in Fin-
ewoodworking for the Laguna 14” SUV.
The Gregory Machinery website is easy to navigate and has a vid-
eo of the actual saw which is very helpful. John Madden from
Gregory Machinery in Queensland was very helpful and all emails
from me were answered promptly. I ordered the machine in De-
cember as John informed me there was a container on the way and
it would be available in February. In mid February I was informed
the container had arrived and I would receive it within a week. The
freight company kept me informed of progress and delivered it
within an hour of the expected time. The truck had a tail lift and
trolley jack to put the very big box right into my garage. Not bad
service.
The table and motor required assembly and a few other bits and
pieces. This was definitely a two man job and was achieved with
the very able help of Bob Turnbull. Many thanks, Bob.
The saw has all the features I was looking for, mobility, height of
cut and 3hp motor. The price is $1595. Mobility kit is $175 and
delivery $275 making a total cost including GST of $2045.
This price compares very favourably to Hafco $1705, Minimax
$1999, and Jet $ 1749 for saw alone.
None of these machines have the height of cut and the Laguna has
a 3HP motor compared to the 2 or 1.5HP of the other machines.
I have used the saw for re-sawing and cutting 2mm veneer. It has
performed admirably. Installing the blade and tracking it was quite
easy due to the precise instructions and the way the machine is
constructed. Up to now, I have only used 25mm blade but I have a
12mm and a 4.5mm that I am yet to try.

RAMBLINGS MARCH 2013
There were no ramblings in the February edition as I was too busy
preparing the boat for the wooden boat festival in Goolwa SA. The boat
soaked up a lot of time; I started doing basic maintenance and repairs but the
deeper I dug the more work was required. The weather didn’t help I was
painting between rain showers a less than ideal situation. We made the festival
and had a great time.
The Development Application for the Nowra Showground Complex has
been approved and we are now finalising the basic design for the shed and
them writing tender documents for the demolition of the old shed and the
supply and erection of the new shed.
I addition to the above Peter and Richard are also undertaking an update of the
workshop safety manual. An updated workshop safety manual is a
prerequisite for obtaining insurance cover for the 2013/1024 financial year.
The members attending the Tuesday night workshop are assembling
their wall mounted tool chest and I have noticed that I am now seriously
behind with mine; I will have to put in some extra effort and catch up.
We are looking at increasing the opportunity for members to undertake
woodturning tuition. Charlie and Peter have both generously offered to assist
with training and Robert will also help if his work commitments allow. We
are looking at a workshop on end grain turning in the near future.

BUNNINGS BBQ SATURDAY 09 MARCH 2013 The first Bunning's BBQ for 2013 was held on Saturday 09 March 2013. We managed to make a profit of in excess of $855 for the day not a great outcome but a good outcome. We had 11 members volunteering to help with the BBQ but two had to withdraw at the last minute due to ill health and unplanned family commitments. We still managed to run three shifts. Bunning’s has requested that the BBQ be ready to sell at 0800 Hrs. and not to shut down till 1700 Hrs. These hours make the three shift system almost a necessity. You need at least three people per shift one to cook, one to assemble the sandwiches and one to handle the money but a shift of 4 allows more flexibility. The morning shift (0730 Hrs. till 1100 Hrs.) Tony, Gordon, Norm and Margaret set up and handled steady sale till the midday shift of (1100 Hrs. till 1400 Hrs.) Peter, Gary, Charlie, John and Margaret took over and this shift was extremely busy. The afternoon shift (1400 Hrs. till 1700 Hrs.) arrived Richard, Daryl, Charlie and Margaret handled steady sales in the afternoon till 1700 Hrs. and then undertook the clean-up. We have used up just about all of our consumables so we will have to restock before the next BBQ scheduled for Sunday 14 April 2013. The spirit of cooperation between the members was great it was a hot day and despite the new canopy with better ventilation it was still very hot in the tent particularly during the mid-day shift when we had to light all the burners on the plate as we were struggling to keep up with the demand. I would like to thank all those who helped out especially Margaret who stayed all day and Charlie who did two shifts so we would not be short on the afternoon shift. There is one other member I would like to single out for a special mention and that is David. David is not well enough to actively participate but he came down to visit provided the team with support and supplied ice creams for all the workers. The ice creams were greatly appreciated David.
