Pages 3a, 3b, and 3c contain templates for the pleats for the three sizes of bags. These pleats will be marked on the batting. 1. Cut out the pleat templates for the size of bag you are making. 2. Fold the batting in half so short edges are together and long side edges align. Lay the pleat templates on the fold of the batting as indicated on the upper right diagram.

3. Insert a pin through both layers of batting at the circle. Mark where the pin enters the batting on both the top and underside of batting (not in between the batting) for all 3 circles.

4. Using a ne line pen or marker, mark these circles on both the top and bottom sides of the batting.

5. Using a straight edge mark the straight sewing line from point A to point B.

Sewing InstructionsINTERFACING (USE PIECES A,C)

1a. Apply iron-on interfacing (C) to bag exte-rior (A) following manufacturer’s instructions.

1b. Mark pleats on batting. (re: page 2)

MAKING PLEATS (USE PIECES A,B,C)

2. Lay down bag exterior fabric (A) with wrong side facing up. Lay batting (B) on top of bag exterior fabric so long edges align, batting is centered between short edges and marked pleats are facing up. Pin together only between marked pleats to form fold line.

2a. Pleats. With exterior bag fabric (A) and batting (B) together (fabric will be right sides together), fold along interior fold line (refer to pleat pattern) matching point A to point A. Pin.

Repeat for other end.

3a and 3b. Sew pleats along stitching lines from point A to point B. For best results, make sure both sewing lines are aligned and sewn directly on top of one another.

Repeat steps 3a and 3b for opposite end.

HANDLES + BELTING (USE PIECES A, B,C,D,E,F,G)

4. WITH HANDLES(Skip to step 5 if not including handles on your bag.)

4a. Place bag right side up with batting under-neath.

Pin centerline of handle (G) (2 1/2 “ for small)(3 1/2” for medium) (4” for large) in from side seams with raw edges facing top of bag and extending 1/8” above the edge. Pin other end the same being careful not to twist handles.

4b. Place 1 piece of belting trim (E) over right side of bag exterior so top edges of belting, bag exterior fabric and batting align. Pin.

Using 1/4” seam, sew across top edge of belting through all layers. Reinforce stitching over handles.

Repeat for other side - easing the fabric around the batting to align edges. Go to step 6.

5. WITHOUT HANDLES

Place bag right side up with batting under-neath. Place 1 piece of belting trim (E) over right side of bag exterior so top eges of belting, bag exterior fabric and batting align. Pin.

Using 1/4” seam, sew across top edge of belting through all layers.

5a. Repeat for other side.

Sewing InstructionsHANDLES AND BELTING, CONTINUED

6. Flip up belting and press seam at the top of the bag down and away from belting.

7. Topstitch through all layers near fold where bag exterior (A) meets belting and again 1/4” away from this stitching. Repeat for other end.

Note: Handles will be shown in the following illustrations, but if not adding the handles just ignore them.

ZIPPER

8c. Using a zipper foot and thread to match belting, topstitch 1/8” away from edge of belting on the right side of the bag to attach zipper. Sew directly over the curved portion of zipper.

8d. Open zipper. Repeat step 8a and 8b for opposite side. When topstitching near the closed end of the zipper, ip and twist the bag up and around for more sewing room.

SIDE SEAMS

9. Close about 2” of the zipper. With right sides together, fold bag in half so zipper teeth sit at top of bag..

9a. Tuck in bottom pleat, so the middle bottom fold of the bag meets at point A and both points B align. Tuck in handles so they are out of the way of the side seams.

Pin side edges together so edges of belting align.

Sew 1/2”away from side edge. Reinforce this stitching securely at top zipper edge.

Continue to sew down to bottom of bag and stop just before you hit the fold of the interior pleat.

Repeat for opposite side seam.

8a. Start with zipper half way open. Pin right side of zipper to wrong side of belting so metal zipper stop is aligned with edge of fabric and so teeth are positioned 1/4“ away from edge of belting.

8b. At open ends of zipper, curve ends of zipper down towards belting so the metal bracket aligns with bottom of belting and raw end of zipper extends out past side seam. Pin handles down and away from zipper to keep away from stitching.

Page 6

Sewing InstructionsLINING 10. With right sides together, align all edges and pin. Using 1/2” seam, sew the linings together along both shorter sides.

Press seams open at.

11. Prepare side seams for lining. Turn tote right side out and open zipper. Reach into bag and at the side seam where the zipper ends, fold raw ends of zipper and belting open and then down and away from zipper teeth and pin.

13a. Change threads to match belting.

Position the zipper foot to topstitch by reaching through opening at bottom of lining.Top stitch 1/8” away from the edge of belting on the inside (the right side of the bag) through all layers and slowly across bulky zipper ends.

13b. Make sure zipper pull is ipped away from zipper foot and facing zipper teeth. Try to remove pins from the underside lining before sewing over them and rearrange the bag to make it easier to sew.

13c. Trim away extra belting and zipper ends to align with side seams to remove bulk.

14. Press lining away from zipper. Topstitch about 1/8” away from fold to secure lining in place.

CLOSE LINING

15. Reach into lining and pull out the bag, so right side of the bag is facing out and lining is still extended out through zipper opening.

Fold in raw edges of lining 1/2“ to the wrong side of lining. Fold corners in at an angle to match pleats at bottom of the bag.

Pin and press together, aligning folds. Topstitch about 1/8” away from edge of folds to sew lining closed.

Stu lining down into bag.

12c. Start pinning at side seam - these are bulky so open them as at as you can. Pin so sharp ends of pins face batting, reaching through the bottom open-ing in the lining to help place pins.

12a. You will be sliding the lining “around” the opening of the bag (like a pillowcase) and sewing around this - it will seem odd so refer to photos. Open zipper. Lay bag down with wrong side of batting facing out. Tuck handles inside bag and pin down.12b. Slide the right side of the lining around the wrong side of the top of the bag so top raw edge of lining is about 1/4” away from bottom edge of belting keeping side seams aligned.

Using thread to match belting, stitch about 3/8” away from teeth to secure everything down and keep zipper ends free from the lining.

At zipper pull end, squash zipper as at as possible and repeat step 11.
