TECHNOLOGICAL EVOLUTION & ORGANIZATIONAL STABILITY – A BALANCING ACT NOT EVERY PLAYER IN THE MARKET SUCCEEDS TO MASTER
Inspection by Dr. Schenk – history and future
For the third decade now Dr. Schenk offers an extensive range of products for automated quality assurance and production process monitoring. Having been the first, and for a long time the only supplier for optical media inspection and process control, we are proud of the experience and competence we have gained during this time. While we continuously apply new optical technologies to our inspection products we develop systems for industries besides optical media. The past 12 months for example have proven that quality assurance and process control for thin film solar modules is a rapidly growing market in which we have successfully become a leading inspection equipment supplier. With the expected immense growth in this area, we have now enlarged our engineering, production and sales resources and founded a solar business division. At the same time, Dr. Schenk has not slowed down its efforts in the optical media sector and is setting precedence in the new format generations by anticipating their needs for surface inspection.
Technological evolution, organizational stability & growth
Known as the inspection pioneer for the optical media industry, Dr. Schenk today continues to set standards for the high definition formats. Blu-ray disc replicators and manufacturers rely on the quality assurance and process control systems that have ”precision in focus“.
The perfect synergy between technical innovation, experience in optical design, close relations and collaboration with major developers of the new media format as well as a solid and growing organization builds the basis for Dr. Schenk‘s Blu-ray competence and business success. To benefit our business partners, the Dr. Schenk organization fosters close communication and cooperation between its global offices. Our long term customers especially appreciate the fact that Dr. Schenk boasts a high satisfaction. A low employee turn over rate additionally benefits our customers in that their direct contact person is highly familiar with a product and its specific adaptations which speeds up the response to service requests enormously.
Business partner of choice
Dr. Schenk’s core competences in optical technology and our understanding of the inspection needs within the media industry is considered unmatched. Our existing customers repeatedly decide for Dr. Schenk as their preferred supplier and partner out of satisfaction with our products and after-sales service we also successfully win new customers due to our products’ competitive advantages.
Preparing now for Generation IV
Dr. Schenk’s long tradition and experience in the Optical Disc area as well as the close cooperation with manufacturers and process integrators let us anticipate new technological developments and trends at a very early stage. These developments and trends are then transformed into practicable and highly reliable products and features. This long term view and early efforts enable us to offer our customers stable and proven systems for inspection and process control as soon as a new format is emerging. With the Blu-ray disc market starting to take shape, we expect that in 2008 our first developments and R&D resources in the GEN IV will soon will pay off. Also, for holographic media disc we have made early contacts with our business partners and customers to develop inspection and process control systems for this new technology.

Blu-ray disc inspection with Dr. Schenk’s ISM.blue+
Coating topography of a Blu-ray disc
on 2048 radii
Michael Dobler Thomas Ruck, Managing Director Product Manager
Blu-ray Inspection
READY FOR BLU-RAY INSPECTION – THE CHALLENGES OF THE NEW MEDIA FORMAT
The new disc format Blu-ray discs (BD) is based on blue laser technology, enabling a substantial increase in recording density. The production of Blu-ray discs involves spin coating of cover and space layer. These coating processes are still new and challenging and very vulnerable to layer thickness variations on the one side and new types of defects on the other. Both could cause the pick-up head to loose its focus or track.
How do the ISM.blue+ and the PROmeteus MT-200.blue address these challenges?
The cover layer – unique to BD discs - and the
space layer of DL discs have to be analyzed with
highest precision. Our in-line scanners measure
the layer thickness on 4 or 8 radii and deliver a
radial thickness profile for production process
control.
However, even more critical are local thickness
variations and deformations that can occur
between the measured radii, like e.g. burst
bubbles, can only be reliably detected if 100
percent of the disc area is checked. In contrast
to competitors scanners that now test on 20-30
radii to cover a slightly bigger disc area,
Dr. Schenk has decided against a simple
increase of measured radii. For DVDs and lately
for BD discs a radial thickness profile on 4 radii
has been proven sufficient for process control.
Our scanners perform a thickness analysis with
an additional inspection channel. The parallel
measurement via our Enhanced ACC-Channel
delivers a coating topography on 2048 radii for
improved process and quality control.
The second big challenge in BD replication
process are the new local defect classes that
can occur in cover and space layer during the
spin-coating process and – for dual layer discs –
during the embossing of the information layer.
Thomas Ruck, Product Manager Blu-ray
Inspection, and his team have classified these
new defect types and developed innovative ways
for a reliable replication process analysis.
Instead of just an upgrade of a standard DVD
scanner, a completely new optical channel has
been developed for the ISM.blue+ unit.
Inspection on two complementary channels
enables correct discrimination between standard
contrast defects and various deflecting defects.
“The accurate classification and evaluation of
defects will lead to higher yields as we now can
minimize incorrect disc rejection” says Thomas
Ruck.

Dr. Schenk Training Center
Service & Support team at the Dr. Schenk Headquarters near Munich
A SERVICE PARTNER YOU CAN RELY ON
Dr. Schenk’s main objective is to offer a “solution” for our customers’ inspection and process control needs. Therefore we are not satisfied with only selling a system and getting it installed into the production line. Service offices in Europe, the USA, China, Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan and Japan guarantee a fast response to support and training requests that are regional and close to the customer.
Customer Specific Product Training
Dr. Schenk has taught nearly 1000 participants how to operate, calibrate and maintain our inspection- and measurement systems.
To ensure operators and service engineers become quickly familiar with Dr. Schenk inspection and measurement systems, a variety of customer trainings are offered. Trainings are held in-house or at customer sites worldwide.
For a detailed course description please visit the Support-Chapter on www.drschenk.com. Contact your local service hotline to arrange a training adapted to the specific needs of your personnel.
Every second counts
Currently Dr. Schenk supports more than 10,000 inspection systems around the globe. Among these are 7,500 ISM scanners for optical media production. A highly qualified global service team is available even after the warrantee has expired. Holger Schimanek, leader of the Munich customer service center explains what our customers can expect and appreciate as competitive advantage in the industry. “Dr. Schenk scanners and systems are known for their durability and system stability. Requests for support and service typically occur after years of operation. Here our service team offers a 3 level service for a fast and reliable help at a minimum of costs.”
The entire service team is highly trained with each product and their customer specific adaptations. As time is very costly for every second an inspection system is down, a fast resolution is critical. We are able to respond to 90 percent of the requests via email and the worldwide telephone hotline. Our colleagues from the service department identify if a certain system part needs to be exchanged and provide installation instructions to the maintenance engineers including an fast order and delivery process of replacement parts. We also are proud of our global service network which provide fast on-site service when needed for system adjustments for parts installation.
