Organizations consist of people and people have emotions, feelings, aspirations and ambitions. They
also have mood swings and suffer depressions at times. Toa Payoh (formerly Sky Media)
Toastmasters Club is no different.
I have three points to share.
I. How TPCC Started.
II. How I benefited.
III. What advice for the future.
I. How TPCC Started
Toa Payoh Central CC TMC started as Sky Media TMC, sponsored by the late Lilian Lau, DTM and Lynn
Desker, DTM. We held fortnightly meetings in Sky Media premises. Being an SME, it moved several
times in its short history, and Sky Media TMC moved with it, from an Anson Road office building to a
Newton Road bungalow.
The initial years were challenging. Sometimes we had just 4 members attending meetings, and we
held multiple appointments. Yeo Chai Tun, James Tan, Kris Tay and Tay Yiang Ping can testify to this.
But we persevered and the rest is history.
What impressed me were the Chinese New Year ‘Loh Hei’ meetings when we ‘tossed the Yu Sheng’
for good luck; and good luck we had! We survived 15 years!
II. How I benefitted
I had my format education in English and spoke it at home with my parents. But formal education
did not prepare me for public speaking. I “cut my teeth” in public speaking in Sky Media TMC when I
had to make my first 10 speeches and evaluations of other speakers. I learned that when I helped
others to improve their public speaking skills, my own skills improved. I gained confidence in public
speaking, learned to listen more and speak on relevant matters and have seen other members
improve their skills. This boosted my own confidence and self-worth, when others improved. I have
met many other Toastmasters, who have told me that they have improved after learning from my
talks, and this has made me realize that I can make a difference in others’ lives.
In the TPCC Executive Committee (EXCO) in which I served for several terms and when serving as
Area Governor and subsequently as Division A Governor, I learned management techniques to make
executive decisions and solve Area and Division matters. Most important, I learned to work with
other Toastmasters, as peers and not as subordinates. That is, I work with them by inspiring them to
work, not by giving orders. The Toastmasters’ organization is a voluntary organization; we serve as
‘Servant Leaders’, not in a “Master-Servant” relationship. Remember this!
III. What advice for the future?
For any organization to survive, it must remain relevant, relevant to the times and to its members.
What I mean is, it must cater to the needs of its members. Where members want to improve their
public communication skills, it must provide that. If social-needs are what they need, meet their
social needs.
In today’s world, both in the corporate and social arena, communication skills play a very important
part! Whether we communicate to individuals or to the masses, what people want to hear is “How
relevant is what you are saying to me?” “Does It help me in my career?” “How can I benefit from
what you are telling me? Am I learning something new?” is what they are asking us.
For those working in sales situations, customer-relations, front-line positions, then Toastmasters’
skills are relevant. Today, many jobs are dealing with people-skills; that is where Toastmasters can
help them, developing people-skills!
I hope that above has been RELEVANT!
With best regards for another 15 years, HUAT AH!
Albert HS Lim, DTM, Chartered Member
Club President 2001-2002
TPCCC TMC nearly folded at the 2nd year of formation if not for the determination and drive of the
early members of the Club.
Members matter has always been the driving force behind the club leaders. I congratulate TPCCC
members on the celebration of her 15th Anniversary.
Yeo Chai Tun DTM
Club President 2003-2004 / 2010-2011
I have learned skills from Sky Media Toastmasters that has benefited me till today. Table
topics trained me to strike conversation with strangers in any setting. Speech projects
enable me to crystalize and organize speeches more concisely. Project evaluation instills in
me consciousness in correct application of English grammar. Best of all, I met many good
friends.

While serving as the 10th club president, I attended the club's 10th Anniversary on 24 Apr
08 for the remaining ten minutes... after attending my father's funeral.
Happy Anniversary TPCTMC.
I believe I can attend every of the club's Anniversary unless I have to be at my own funeral.

Club President 2007-2008
“Speaking from my personal experience, the Toastmaster journey is a leisurely learning & self-
development programme where one can plan his or her own pace to learn and develop
oneself. That means one can accelerate or goes slower according to your own time schedule.
One can board on this Toastmaster journey without fear at any time or any age group as the life
skills acquired in the Toastmaster Programme is relevant to anyone who wishes to develop him
/ her in the fun way. It is a friendly learning environment where everyone can enjoy
themselves, learning new skills and making new friends.
I had enjoyed the Toastmaster Program and would recommend anyone to board on this
learning journey with me."
Lim Poh Pian, ATMB, CL
Club President 2005 – 2006

Angela Oh, Club President 2009-2010
Being in Toa Payoh Toastmasters is an amazing journey for me. I would like to summarize my testimonial
with one word "Inspirational"
My Top Ten Reasons
1. Inspirational Figures during my early days in the club in 2010. Kris Tay and Chai Tun. I liked how they
sincerely connect with the audience, and it seemed so easy and natural for them.
2. Good Speakers, I enjoyed watching many good speakers doing their project on the stage. I want to be
like them.
3. There are many members who I've met where their first language is not English. Every meeting I see
the courage and enthusiasm to overcome and learn to improve on their English Communication.
4. One of the members who have inspired me. Weibing (from China). Even though she stutters through
his speeches, he made sure he completes them and have his messages get through to the audience. One
of his great highlights was when he was voted best table topics speaker. Amazing. If he can do it, so can
I.
5. Every chapter meeting, we seemed to recruit members. I'm very amazed at the continuous hard work
everyone has put in to recruitment.
6. I dream of giving an inspirational speech at a TED convention. With a big stage like in our mini-theatre,
it is an ideal opportunity for me to learn.
7. There are many members who are not able to regularly attend our meetings, but they still do try to be
up to date with our club activities. Especially for today (27 April 2013), some of them are here to attend
our 15th year anniversary
8. Everyone in TPY Toastmasters Club is treated like family. 3 Motherly figures I enjoy learning from:
Jenny Au, Yiang Ping, Mei Siew.
9. Makan Session: How can I forget this, members bond together outside our normal toastmasters
settings. Everyone of us is so close
10. Hey, 15 years already, isn’t that inspirational?
Kenneth Poon
Club Treasurer 2012-2013
Toa Payoh Central CC Toastmasters Club is like my second home since 1999.
I am happy to see that the very first VPM that inspired me to join Toastmasters, Albert Lim DTM still
with our Club, the only surviving Chartered Member, and still going strong!
When I was the Club President in 2002, all I knew was to chase for DCP.
As Area Governor in 2003, I had the opportunity reviving a Club that left with only 3 members.
As Division Governor in 2005, I helped rebuilding an abandoned Advanced Club.
When our only 2 years old Advanced Club almost folded, I have the opportunity to sharpen my saw
again! Yes, being a recycled Club President has allowed me going back to basics to look at
Toastmasters in a better perspective.
Yes, fellow members, nothing to fear, if You have a Will, You have a Way!
Yes, Toastmasters, You can Make A Difference!
Happy 15th Anniversary to my Home Club!
Tay Yiang Ping DTM
Club President 2002-2003 & 2012-2013
What makes TPCTMC special....people, people, people.
Every member is friendly, helpful, kind and considerate with their words and actions.
That's what makes TPCTMC a safe haven for newbie like myself to experiment and
practice, without feeling undue pressure.
Thank you TPCTMC!

Joining Toastmasters is a great way to gain confidence and to understand yourself
and people.
Joining the club in 2007 has also allowed me to make new friends and achieve new
skills in toastmasters and outside of it.
Edwin Tan
Club President 2012 - 2013
The trip to Kukup Malaysia organised by the club. I've been able to bring my mum and
dad as well as my family on an outing where the children enjoy.
The time spend with my family would definitely be the most memorable one. It's also
the reason why I always like about TPC toastmaster as it’s always very heartwarming
as I have also come for year-end activities like BBQ at East Coast.

Club Treasurer 2011 - 2012
Toastmasters gives me warmth
It makes me feel like i am reborn Initially, I spoke like as if there was a thunderstorm
"Can you hear me?", my inner voice screamt
I stood behind the lectern and whimpered
"May that 5-7 minutes ennnnd!"
I was never left alone to waddle in the deep sea
Mentors and friends would welcome me They stand by the door, beaming
Just like sunshine, shining through my inner soul
Encouragement, support and kindness
Come as though they heard my prayers Fun, food and fellowship
There was no lack of it -
I enjoyed every bit of it!
