Accessibility and Inclusion
We have a responsibility to educate and
orient all participants
• Use microphones in all settings if available (large
classrooms in particular)
• Have all materials accessible in a variety of formats for
students or guests who may need a screen reader
• Consider the impacts of students or guests in your room
who have mobility, hearing, or visual impairments
• Caption all videos and turn on captions at all times

STAR 2020 – Campus Update
The National Association for College Admissions
Counseling (NACAC) Assembly voted to remove
three provisions from the association’s Code of Ethics
and Professional Practice (CEPP) that the US
Department of Justice (DOJ) believes inhibit, to some
extent, competition among colleges for students.
The three provisions address offering exclusive
incentives for Early Decision, recruiting first-year
undergraduates who have committed elsewhere, and
recruiting transfer students.

STAR EXPERIENCE
Will 2020 be your first STAR?
10
STAR 2020 – Campus Update
What is STAR? Acronym – Summer Transition, Advising and Registration
One of two primary orientation programs
Program is designed to ease a student’s transition to life
at the University
Students and guests attend sessions and perform tasks
to prepare for their academic experience
Foundational elements established around this time (pre-
registration, housing, learning communities, etc.)
In 2019, over 6,400 students and over 10,000 guests
participated; over 1,500 in VSTAR
11
STAR 2020 – Campus Update
Setup For Today
2020 story begins where 2019 story ended
Data points from STAR
• Post-STAR Participant, Guest Surveys (2,000+ student responses)
• Post-STAR Hot Wash / lessons learned
• Formal and informal campus partner conversations
12
STAR 2020 – Campus Update
Newton’s Third Law
“We don’t have enough
time, can STAR be two
days?”
“It seems like STAR could
be just a half day”
“Why make students come
to campus in the summer?”
“Why allow students to do
orientation virtually?”
“Absolutely loved the
Information Fair”
“What a waste of time. Just
end the day early.”
13
STAR 2020 – Campus Update
Soul Searching Questions
What is their path to registration?
What is the directive to get there?
On site, what are their interaction points during the day?
How satisfied are they with their STAR day?
Does this vary by student population?
How does this compare to previous years?

18
STAR 2020 – Campus Update
Path and Process to STAR
Messages on the New Student Task List and in STAR
registration were direct or repetitive
Some tasks provided confusion or challenges
Communication seemed to disconnect STAR and BGR
When on site for STAR, some items are repetitive for
particular populations

What Have We Found Messages around navigation and wayfinding were
in need of repair
Satisfaction rates had wide variance depending on
student demographic
Larger sessions could have impact on the user
experience leading up to (session availability) and
including (lower satisfaction) the STAR day
25

What Have We Done Created messages with equity in mind
Shifted to an outward facing Orientation Programs brand,
instead of just Boiler Gold Rush
Made adjustments to the full program and daily schedules with
the user experience in mind
We’re imperfect, and working hard to improve
Culture doesn’t change overnight, but small and intentional
improvements can have a great impact
• 2/25/19 – 830 STAR Registrants / 2212 Accepted (37.5%)
• 2/26/20 – 873 STAR Registrants / 1926 Accepted (45.3%)
