Coursedescription:TheaimofthiscourseistointroducestudentstobasicdescriptiveandinferentialstatisticsinAppliedLinguistics.Assuch,thecourseaimstoequipstudentstounderstandandevaluatebetter themethods and statistical perspectives of research studies reported in academicjournalsandbooksinthefield,tohelpstudentsacquiretheconceptsandskillsnecessarytodesign,analyseandreporttheirownstudies,andtofamiliarizestudentswiththerationaleand use of a comprehensive range of techniques andmethods for analysing quantitativelanguagedatausingSPSS.

Teachingmethod: Lectures,classroomapplications,studentpresentations.

Prerequisites: None.

Teachingaids: PowerPointpresentation,referencebooks,articles,computers,SPSS.

Assessmentmethod:Throughout the semester, students need to submit ten written assignments. In theseassignments, students are asked to analyse the data provided by the lecturer and reportthem appropriately. The assignments account for 40% of students’ overall scores. Inaddition, studentsareexpected toconducta research studyand report their findings inaresearch paper constituting of at least 3000 words. This accounts for 50% of students’overallscores.Thosewho(areacceptedto)publishtheirstudiesinaninternationaljournalautomatically receive 100 points for the written research report. Apart from the writtenreport,studentsalsoneedtopresenttheirresearchstudiesina15-minuteoralpresentationsessionat theendof thesemester.Thiswillhaveacontributionof10%over theiroverallgrades. Thosewho (are accepted to) present their studies at a conference, automaticallyreceive 100 points for the presentation session.
