Lesson 1-The break down
• Prepositions link nouns, pronouns and phrases to other words.
• Example: My wife is in the kitchen making a sandwich.• “in” is the preposition connecting his wife to the
kitchen.
• In German it’s the exact same. Try not to over work yourself.
• Beispiel: Meine Frau ist in der Küche und macht mir ein Butterbrot.
Time expressions
• This is to refresh your memory:
• Sonntag is Sunday
• Montag is Monday
• Sonntagmorgen is Sunday morning
• Montagnachmittag is Monday afternoon.
Dative
• Dative in German is for indirect objects.
• Here is a table showing you article changes: Before / After
• Masculine der / dem
• Feminine die / der
• Neuter das / dem
• Plural die / den

•You can create time expressions that answer the question wann (when) with the prepositions an (on), in (in), and vor (ago).
•These time expressions require the dative case.
Days of the week with dative
• Use an in combination with days of the week and times of the day.
• Am Sonntag (on Sunday)
• Am Montag (on Monday)
• You can also combine day and time of day:
• Am Sonntagmorgen (on Sunday morning)
• Am Montagnachmittag (on Monday afternoon)
• Note: There is no Morgenmorgen instead you would say Morgenfrüh.
Days of the week with dative
• In addition, you can indicate dates:
• Example #1: am 14. April• (on the fourteenth of April)
• Example #2: am 31. Dezember• (on the thirty-first of December).
Seasons with dative
• Use in with seasons and months.• Example #1: im Herbst• Example #2: im Mai
• Since you are in the dative case when you refer to a month you must conjugate it by replacing the -n with a -m
• You also use in when using time expressions or days• Example #1: in fünf Tagen• Example #2: in zwei Wochen • Example #3: in drei Monaten
Time expressions and dative
• When you use vor, you need a number plus Tag(e), Woche(n), Monat(e) or Jahr(e):
• Example #1: vor zwei Tagen• two days ago
• Vor sieben Jahren • seven years ago
• Remember: These prepositions work with the dative case. You need an –n on plurals.
Dative with seasons
•Seasons •Im Herbst gehe in das Museum.•In Fall I go to the Museum.
•Im Mai spiele ich Fussball.•In May I play football.
Dative with time
•Time•In fünf Tagen spiele ich Basketball
•Notice the –n I added to the end of Tagen because it is plural
•In five days I play basketball•In zwei Wochen ich sehe
Ramstein.•In two weeks I will see Ramstein.
Using Am
• Using am:
• Am Montag ich gehe in das Museum.•On Monday I will go to the Museum
•Ich gehe die Kino am Montagnachmittag.• I will go to the movie theater
Monday evening.
Using Vor
•Using Vor:
• Meinen Bruder spielen Fussball vor sieben Jahren. •My brother plays football for seven
years.
• Vor elf Monaten sie hat ein Bunny. •For eleven months she had a
bunny.
