When TIG welding certain materials, such asstainless steel or nickel alloys, it is necessary to
prevent the reverse side of the weld area oxidising,particularly in pipework when post-weld cleaning ofthe root is impossible.This is usually achieved bypassing a stream of inert gas through the pipe, orover the reverse side of a plate, to exclude, or purge,
oxygen from the area.The gases most frequently used for purging areargon or nitrogen. Which gas is chosen will dependon technical, practical or economic reasons.
