Ana LaínsThe Soul of Portugal Live from Lisbon Fall 2015 US Tour

F A D O
Ana continued to perform extensively inside and outside Portugal before releasing her first record, "Sentidos" (Senses), in 2005. A number of fado luminaries participated as composers (including Jorge Fernando, who has written music for Ana Moura, Mariza and many other artists), lyricists and musicians. She toured extensively in support of this album, with concerts in Spain, The Netherlands, Russia, Greece, France and Germany.
She began performing at the Casa de Linhares fado house in Lisbon in 2007, following in a long line of high profile fadistas—such as Ana Moura, Jorge Fernando and Celeste Rodrigues—who have sung there. This was an exceptionally fertile beginning that launched her into singing at other storied houses in Lisbon, such as Café Luso, Sr. Fado and Marquês da Sé. Her second record, entitled "Quatro Caminhos" (Four Roads) and released in 2010, spans traditional fado and other Portuguese musics. The CD is notable for the breadth of its lyrical expressions and for the vigor with which Ana Laíns embraces the myriad emotions they convey.
Ana Laíns continues to perform fado internationally and nationally, both in typical fado houses and festivals. She currently serves as ambassador for the Camões Institute of Portugal in the international celebration of 800 years of the Portuguese language. Ana is fluent in written and spoken Portuguese and English.
Ana Laíns’ career as a performer began in 1991 when, at twelve years of age, she began singing traditional Portuguese folk music. By 15 she was regularly performing fado; five years later, she was singing at the Casino Estoril near Lisbon, at the time the largest casino in Europe. That same year she went on to win her category in the Grande Noite de Fado—Portugal’s premier fado competition—leading to concert engagements in France, Germany and Belgium.
Pedro Galveias, while only in his 40s, has already celebrated his 30th year in the fado. He won the Grande Noite do Fado on two different occasions, first in the young singer’s category in 1986 then in the adult category in 1995.
Pedro is part of a golden generation of singers who studied under the great Lisbon fadista Fernando Maurício. He performs regularly at fado houses throughout Lisbon and Portugal. He has released two records, “Assim se Canta” and “Loucuras de Um Fado.”
Accompanying Ana and Pedro are Sandro Costa (left, on the Portuguese guitar) and António Fernando Costa Neto (right, on the viola, or classical guitar)—musicians who have honed their craft through years of performances in the taverns and restaurants of Lisbon as well as in international venues.
